For the Love of Caps, Fleurs, Pets, and Toes

I think Mother’s Day is as overrated as any other holiday. I may write about it sometime, only, probably not. I’m generally on my throne, waving my scepter around, demanding things, so it’s no big deal to me. Just lemme sleep in!

BUT! Yesterday was a glorious Sunday!

Any day I wake to The Mister is a good one, but when I wake up to coffee and he wears a cap? Omalord.

y'all don't even know

y’all don’t even know

Sassy was sick half the day. Kinda put a damper on the start.

We had lunch with the whole clan. Bittersweet. Wonderful, but too brief.

It was in the high 80’s yesterday and that’s way too warm for me, but I’ve learned not to complain, because I DON’T LIVE IN GEORGIA ANYMORE!
I know that most people are sick of my goin on about how much I love being home, but I still thank God I’m home at least twice a day. This time of year, I might say it ten times a day and think it a hundred.
It’s part of my recovery from the trauma.
People think I’m bein dramatic and ask, “But did you die?!?” Psh, no, but oh, how I suffered.

I walk around smiling madly. It’s so green and lush here. The smells, oh the smells! On top of all the plants, the scent of rain, damp shade, and dark loam linger here.

We sat on the porch for quite some time, takin it in. Sassy’s feet dangled over the side of her chair as she snuggled Cletus the Dog Kitten, Moo did yoga poses while riding her bike, Sadie stood guard, Catticus rolled around on the concrete. The Mister and I took in all the happiness with a shared smile.

i wished my mother's red toes were there, too

I did some dishes, washed some dog, and fetched some vittles at the market. All of these things were chores, but pleasant, and routine.

The Mister did bring me a bouquet yesterday, and would you believe it included those cheerful green pompom flowers I just mentioned last week? I was told they’re green ball Dianthus. Quite nice. I call them fleurs, he calls them weeds, and that makes his gesture even sweeter.

I’m glad to say the temps are lower this week. I’ll be avoiding the back hallway trim, neglecting housework, playin hell with my nails, just piddlin my heart out in the yard.

Didja have a nice Sunday? Whatcha doin this week?

My toenails are a Welch’s grape juice colour. The house was harmonious yesterday – no mean feet, er, feat – and although I didn’t get flowers I got 2.5 hours of writing time uninterrupted. This week? Reading a stack of magazines someone gave me and thinking about gardening. But just thinking. Happy post-mother’s day.

Sounds like you had a good day! Thanks for commenting, and happy post-mother’s day to you, too!

Hub and I spent two weeks doing our yearly DEEP cleaning of the house in prep for Mother’s Day brunch, which is at our house. We cook and have his (local) family over, along with my family. We were up early prepping and cooking. Family arrived by noon, left before 2. We were exhausted and spent the rest of the day just chilling. I loved having the family over, but Hub has a niece and a nephew who are still very young, and all that screamin’ and racin’ around is too much for me. Even 2 hours of it was more than enough thankyouverymuch. Le Moo stayed out of the way, but Butthead was running around with the kids (which tired her out, too… yay!)
Physically, doing all that stuff is really hard on me. But emotionally, I love being able to have family over to our house to celebrate our Moms. It’s the one “holiday” we get (all the other holidays are either at his family’s house, my parents’ house, or out in a restaurant).

    • That does sound like good work, but hard on the nerves :/
Once I realized Sassy was sick, I did pause for a moment to wonder if we shouldn’t just order in and have everyone here, but I really didn’t want to play hostess, even a lil bit. I will say, it’s a relief to have older kids now.
This morning at the vet, there was a mama with one in the snuggi and one toddlin, as she carried her cat in the carrier. Phew! I said to Sassy, “Oh I am so glad y’all are big now!”
The sweetness of small people is matched only by their terror! 😛
I’m glad you enjoyed the day! Thanks for chimin in!

I’m sorry Sassy was sick and I hope she’s feeling better. But really, it made for a quiet and sweet day for you all. 🙂
I’m not the best with young children. I babysat once, with my grandmother living across the street (it was neighbors/friends of hers) for a six month old infant and a 3yo precocious toddler. I went to put the baby in one of those jumping things in the doorway and it tilted backward and the baby hit her head on the floor. I grabbed her up, snatched the 3yo’s hand and we marched across the street–with the baby screaming bloody murder–and I handed them off to my grandmother. Then I walked three miles home. That was the one and only time I ever babysat. And it solidified my feeling of NO KIDS. I was twelve. 🙂

        • Oh wow. Yeah, lol, good call! I have a hard time with boys. I hafta really like a boy kid to babysit him. I really only do well with boys who are like Bubba and Simon — quieter and calmer than most, on the spectrum, strangely intellectual for a child. I’m weird like that.
I had a babysitting job with a family when I was a teenager. They had five kids, and we had the BEST time, but as soon as the new baby came, I was out! I said “NO WAY!” I struggled with babies until I had my own.

Sounds like you had a nice (and productive!) Mother’s Day. Mine was nice but not very productive. But that’s okay. I got to read and eat popcorn, so I’ve got no complaints. 🙂

Great Sunday for you, Joey. So obvious by how much of your best slang it drew out of you. Sweet.

I like the photo of your happy Mister, too. Comfortable family you got there. Doubly sweet.

I have writing work to do this week and a meeting to start more work, too. Cool, that!

  8. Sure seems you had a good day, all in all, we had a normal day, mom and Boeta had breakfast in bed, which happens every so often in any case, we had barbecue, also normal. We keep Sundays relaxed as a rule, hard to do much better.

  9. Sounds like you had a lovely day (apart from Sassy being ill), I thought your flowers were beautiful too, those vibrant colours are gorgeous. Enjoy your piddlin’! 🙂

  10. The Mister looks an exceptionally happy husband. Scepter or not, you’re doing something right, Your Highness. I too adore those little green pompom dianthus which as far as I know cannot be grown in the US yet. Meaning they aren’t selling seed for them yet. At least they were not two years or so ago when I checked and I am too lazy to go verify that right now. Hope you have a good day ahead.

  12. It sounds like you had a marvelous day. 🙂 I spent the day traveling home, got all the chores done yesterday, and today it is on to gardening – tree trimming, weed pulling, deadheading. Ah, the good life of a gardener. 🙂

  13. I’ve been away from seed catalogs and garden nurseries for too long. That dianthus is an eye-catcher. Does it have a fragrance? I’m going to guess that the cinnamon spice odor has been bred out.

I do love your writing. I’m always left with a smile and I learn something. Thanks.

    • It has no detectable smell beyond plant-like. A bit of a clean botanical smell. Of course, that could be from being placed in the bouquet with other flowers?
Thank you for the lovely compliment 😀

    • Thank you, Jewels 🙂
I read earlier about orange halves for orioles and I’d never heard of that. My grandma gave them jam. Don’t you know, when I Googled it, your picture was the one that caught my eye? It was attached to a post and I thought that was the neatest coincidence!

What a fun coincidence! Oh I miss orioles! They never did come here when I put that feeder out for them, alls I got was bees. And ants. :/
Do you have an oriole feeder out?

        Like

        • No, I don’t. I haven’t seen a single oriole. I intend to ask MIL if she’s seen any at her house. Are we maybe too city? I dunno.
I’ve got peonies, and a pile of flowers, so I’ve got enough ants and bees for the moment, lol!
