Funky Foodie Takes a Walk

I’ve been in such a funk lately, feeling poorly, fighting off infection, dealing with anxiety’s peaks. My mood has been good, loving, receptive, but my body doesn’t always feel cooperative. When my body isn’t functioning at the level I deem as my own normal, then anxiety settles in all nice and cozy.
OR MAYBE IT LEAPS UP, SCARES THE SHIT OUT OF ME, AND THEN LAUGHS ABOUT IT!

The real signs of wellness have appeared over the last week, as for me, it’s what kind of appetite and how much energy I have. You can see the obvious correlation.

Someone once asked me if all my days included cookware, which made me laugh. I should photograph everything I make and/or eat, because some people (believe it or not, people other than me) enjoy food porn and I guess people who don’t should scroll on. I’ll work on that.

Then, because I have felt well enough to have cooked and eaten, I get restless and need to burn off some energy.
It is good to have energy to burn.

Despite the oppressive heat (still ain’t Georgia hot!) I decided we should take a nice long scenic walk, maybe at the park or someplace closer than the canal. The Mister said we should investigate a new-to-us area of the city’s walking paths. I dunno what they’re called, but somethin about White River or Fall Creek or somethin. They’re here and there. I couldn’t picture what The Mister was goin on about when he said “trail under the bridge,” but once we got there, the trail did, in fact, go under the bridges, under the roads.
The Mister had an extra pep in his step, because he was happy to have been right.

I love how we have mini forests in the city. All that green does my heart good. Personally, I’d like to walk a lot more of that particular path. Almost as much as I’d like to be wine wasted during a foot rub. Imma work on that, too.

Anyway, you know what was so incredibly pleasant about our walk yesterday?
Clover.
So much clover, I could still smell it on my clothes when I got home.
I asked my girls what they smelled and Sassy said, “Honey” while Moo said, “Hot tea” and I think those answers were precious.

Summer is too hot for Joeys, but the plants make it worth it. Like clover. Fresh tomatoes are great to slice or fry, but also to smell. I bought a hand soap that smells like tomato stems. I love that smell, along with the aroma of fresh herbs on my hands after picking rosemary or chopping cilantro, basil, lavender, wild onion — All those smells are terrific mood enhancers for me.

How’ve you been? Walked anywhere new? Smelled anything delightful?

The salty smell from the sea is one that never disappoints when I wake up in the morning and open my windows. Then there’s the smell of baking pervading the entire house because I’m going through a “baking phase” at the moment. I bake a lot anyway but it’s becoming an out of control type of thing, I’ve put on so much weight lately it’s actually ridiculous. Oh well 🙂

Yes! The smell of tomato stems smells like summer. We went for a walk yesterday, too, in a new to us area that featured a huge dog park which was empty of dogs AND people. Pretty though. It also had an abandoned rock garden which made me sad. I could see it was quite spectacular before the weeds and maple saplings took over. I guess it’s being “naturalized”.

    • That sounds fantastic. There is spectacular beauty in manicured gardening, but naturalizing has its appeal.
I miss having a nearby dog park. We don’t take Sadie near as much as we used to. She likes a nature trail, too tho 🙂

I’ve been walking on trails, taking pictures of lush green. Once I’m back in the desert, I’ll blog about it or just feel sorry for myself that the summer desert isn’t known for walking trails or lush green. I adore clover, and little clover flowers…have pictures of them too. And while I can’t eat all that I used to, I still love food pics. Friend green tomatoes…OMG ❤

Well I like food porn. Of course looking at food isn’t nearly as great as smelling and eating. Lots of folks have memories that respond to aroma as well as sound and sight. My memories as well as my moods are enhanced by scents. Nice post. Happy eating and eating.

I’m sorry funkitis hit you! Sounds like that walk was helpful. And maybe the almost-fishbowl-size margarita? 😃

FYI-I’d totally eat those blueberry pancakes. I’m almost drooling.

FYI, Funky Foodie sounds like a great book series character. Or maybe a porn star, like in the ones with the pizza with the extra sausage.

A walk is often the perfect antidote to any stirred-up emotions or general ennui. Glad you have nice walking areas around you to choose from. As for those yummy pictures you posted? Suddenly my own plans for dinner seem less enticing, especially since it will be leftovers!

I was fine until today, despite hubby’s absence on a work trip. He returned last night, and I was glad to see him, but even though he’s here, he’s not really here ’cause he’s workin’. I think I miss him more when that’s the case than when he’s actually gone. The remainder of June, he will be gone, and then we go to my grandma’s funeral in the eastern part of the state (NY.) I don’t currently have a project so I am bored and itchy and anxious and feeling down. I always need something to occupy my mind and hands or I go a little crazy. So the combination of not having couple time and no project is making me ornery. I know my moods should not depend on occupation, but they do. But, as you say, the flowers are blooming, it has been relatively cool here so I can sleep with the windows open (I love waking up to a fresh smelling bedroom instead of stale funk) and I am looking forward to seeing family, despite the sadness of the occasion.

    Fondly,
    E

    • Occupation is crucial.
Did you read “Hope and Help for your Nerves?” MMHM.
It’s too humid for me to have open windows, so you’ve definitely got my envy there. I hope time passes quickly until you and your love are able to celebrate togetherness ❤

  12. We walked to the farmer’s market on Saturday and bought a maple cake. It was warm and raining just a little. Perfect walking weather.

The scent of clovers is in the air here too, it’s so lovely isn’t it? Those other scents you mentioned are wonderful as well – especially the lavenderrrrrr. ❤
Sorry you've been feeling poorly Joey, hope you get to feeling better soon! 🙂

I’m all about the food porn, I love your instagram photos of food. The fried green tomatoes look fantastic. I’ve only had them once. My grandpa used to have my mom cook them for him all the time but she never did once I was old enough to appreciate vegetables. We got all set to make them shortly after my dad died, because I wanted to try, but I ended up stricken with a full blown migraine. I tried to eat, but got sick. I’m going to have to give them another whirl the next time I see green ones in the store since we aren’t growing any this year!

One thing I miss in the U.K. is really good homegrown tomatoes. We can grow them, but it just doesn’t get hot enough to make a tomato plant happy and they’re just not the same.

It’s still very early but I am sooooo hungry now and I want fried green tomatoes. One of my wife;s cherry tomato plants has one tiny tomato. I wonder…

I start a few days each week, walking along the CT River at a local park. It’s calm, cool and it smells like a river should smell. I can’t ever go too far, but it’s amazing what a little walk along the shore will do for my day.

    Food pics, always welcome 🙂

Food comforts. No doubt, Joey. Your photos got it goin’ on. So I have to share my initial encounter with fried green tomatoes. On a lunch date with my dear wife Karen and her friend Chris from downstairs at the big daily, we walked the block to the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, and they couldn’t believe I’d never tried their FGT. So we ordered up an app to share, and immediately glommed a piping hot ring. And didn’t that sucker adhere itself to the roof of my mouth with a fit any senior denture wearer dreams about nightly. Burned the bejeebers out of the whole ta uf ma mouf. Which is how I had to talk the rest of the date. And still MDW Karen continued to go out with me!

Walks with scents of tea and honey might heal a mouf burn, too. 🙂

I think they would have warned me with similar words if I had not jumped into the done pile so fast and furious, Joey. Ouuuuuch. Yup. Done burned my face off. Yeah, Karen’s a peach to share this adventure. 🙂

  24. Absolutely love the food pics, the words about smells and summer thoughts. I had never eaten fried tomatoes until a trip to Savannah last summer. I LOVED them! Cilantro is my favorite herb, although someone told me that it’s called devil herb. I also love to walk. Anywhere. Everywhere. Walking clears my mind, uplifts my mood and returns peace to my heart. Great post, Joey.
