The Quiet Room

As all parents know, children are born to remove quiet from the world. Instinctively, people under the age of twelve know it’s dangerous to let their parents read, or heaven forbid, hear themselves think.
It is essential that all children interrupt all conversations, particularly phone conversations. Special attention must also be paid when their parents’ eyes are twinkly and there’s a lot of kissing. That is the window of opportunity in which children must break something or suffer injury.

We’re in the quiet room today.
I started “This is the quiet room,” almost immediately in motherhood.

I’ve recently had to reestablish the parameters of the quiet room, because sometimes three people are in the living room reading and some jerkface beloved family member comes in and turns on the television.

Right now I can hear the clocks ticking. Ahh.

I miss how I had the quiet room while the kids were in school, but I totally love the sleeping in, but you know, ya take the good, ya take the bad.

So is the quiet room a specific room or just any room you and the Mr decide needs to be quiet?

I remember many years ago when I wanted to build out a family room in the basement. My wife was not all that interested in the project until I said: “I’ll put the TV down there” (it was in the living room) and she jumped on board. I’m not sure we ever have quiet (unless the dog is asleep and the cats have had enough attention) but it’s better than it was.

  4. A quiet room…what a great idea. I wish my friend who has a child had implemented this so that I could visit in peace.
    Did that sound selfish? 😉

Haha, is it selfish to want to chat to your friend in peace? NO! Your friend surely wants the same.
Kids can’t do it until they reach a level of understanding expectations, so if the kid is small, you just gotta wait it out, lol!

Ah yes, quiet rooms. One would think there’d be more of them with teenagers. One would be wrong. Brothers like to make noise, it seems, no matter their age.

But I remind myself the oldest will soon leave, and my family will shift to new dynamics. So I’ll enjoy the noise-makers while I can.

I get no quiet room or sleeping in. Boo. This son of mine who complains about waking up at 7:15 on school days mostly believes in waking up earlier than that with a spring in both steps on weekdays and vacations.

My son was that way, too. Until high school, anyway. The girls aren’t like that, never have been. Early waking for them was 8:30-9. Most days Sassy and Moo will sleep past noon if I let them. *grateful*

Yes! Love the quiet room idea. I don’t think that would EVER work in my home unfortunately. We do “quiet time”. They must do a quiet activity in their respective rooms. I find my flow for writing is all off now that they’re home for summer vacation.

I admire your instituting a quiet room right from the start of child raising, Joey! You are a genius! I used to have a “study” in my house, with ex sharing it when no sports were on t.v. I loved this leather love seat, perfect to curl up with a book or read the paper. I have a lot of quiet in my apt after work these days in the empty nest but weekends are, “Go, go, go!” 🙂

I actually had an unexpected reinstatement of the quiet room last week when my kids were at soccer camp, all day, every day, for five glorious days. but, I couldn’t sleep in on those days so you’re right: good with bad.
