As If Time Is Made of Stories

According to the stats on my last post, people don’t like it when I blog about Bubba. Heh, he probably doesn’t like it when I blog about him either.
I have a lot of happiness to share today, including that I am still excited for his return to Indy!

Second grandson has been born. Sissy and baby are both recovering well. New grandson doesn’t look Mottern-ly and isn’t anyone’s namesake, but I am forced to admit that I love him anyway. Unlike my husband, I do not long to hold him and change his pants, (Ewww, babies!) but I do look forward to when we can fingerpaint. I hope those boys will like animal crackers. I never get to eat animal crackers anymore.

The wee ones have returned to school. Long Live The Quiet Room! It is the suck for one reason. Paper. OMFG the paper. I am so sick of filling out paperwork. I am sick of flyers. I’m sure that four kids and years of military bureaucracy only heighten my hatred of paperwork, but I do so hate when my kids give me homework. How many times must I write my address and phone numbers?!? Now the health form asks if we’re homeless, how large our family is, our income, and for student and parent social security numbers. Um, no. For the love of puppies, just put microchips in their fingers and scan them! One day it will all be digital, and our grandkids will be like, “Paper? Made from trees?” Hopefully I’m done with the forms.
Yes, Sassy and I have already chased down and missed her bus, 12 minutes early! So glad I have Bonnie Blue and that I was able to drive her to school.
So…Long Live The Quiet Room!

The Mister is a rockstar at work. ROCK.STAR.

And — Drumroll —
HME came to visit!
We might, on our own, without husbands and children, revert to former versions of ourselves. I maybe went to the store to buy cat litter and soda and bought only soda. I maybe went to the Starbucks and forgot to buy a pound of coffee. It’s simply too hard to think when we never shut up. As would be natural for the younger version of myself, I did not forget to buy anything at the liquor store.

HME asked what we were eating, and I had to say, since it was a spur of the moment visit, we were havin a feast, but nothin fancy. No corn souffles, just some down home fare. I baked a chicken, some cornbread, a cake, mac n’ cheese, and sauteed some summer squash. I threw together a four bean salad. We picked at it and she said, “Add garlic.” I added garlic. We picked again. I asked, “How about some Cajun?” She said yes. I added Cajun seasoning and let it sit in the fridge for several hours. Nom. Oh, and The Mister cut us up some watermelon!

We stayed up into the wee hours. I keep sayin I’m too old for that shit, but I keep doin it. HME and I could totally win a talkathon. We tend to fall back to where we were, as if time is made of stories. I love the company of old friends. I miss her already.

It’s rainy today. We don’t need the rain, but I sure do like it. The high today will be 75, which for August, for me, is a lovely reprieve!

Congratulations! That is a TON of happiness in your world. I’m glad to hear sissy and grandson #2 are doing well.
In my world Owen will be back here for the school year on the 16th and until then I’m enjoying a blissful new relationship. It is so unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in all ways that are good. He’s fucking amazing, basically. And I am good to him, too…we make a good match. You know when you asked if a kiss had ever set me on fire and I said yes? Well, I was wrong. That must have been a spark, maybe a smolder… This…this is an all out burn down the house fire. What’s better is that it isn’t just the fire. I’m calm, sure, safe. He’s chasing away my demons and keeping me feeling protected and adored. All the happy!!

What a joyful joyful post to start my day (other than that frickin’ paperwork). I’ll say again how bloated our feds have gotten and how they need to be put on a serious budgetary diet. One wonders if all that paperwork is being printed on the reams of paper you parents had to furnish!

Such fun and heart to visit with your longtime buddy. And i would fight off The Mister for a chance to cuddle your newest grandson. I LOVE the babies – dirty nappies ‘n all – I think it’s that new baby smell on the crown of their head that binds to my heart.

Much love, many smiles, life is good in the Mottern household 💖

Thanks, Sammy! I had to LOL at that paper comment! It’s been a hectic, but wonderful week so far 😀

Just thought of this – it’ll set your hair aflame with bad thoughts. About a decade ago someone in the federal gov’t thought too much paper was being wasted in the bureaucracy (!) and a regulatory decree was writ in stone (or paper) that EVERY federal form the gov’t required from citizens (think IRS tax forms – there are at keast 600) would now require a statement on the firm explaining WHY THE FORM IS NECESSARY. You can only imagine the taxpayer-funded manhours AND THE ADDITIONAL PAPER that have been wasted as each bureaucratic fuefdom crafted its own bureaucratic gov’t-speak as to the necessity if theur precious forms.

Can you tell I have little respect for our feds, including the totally unnecessary Dept of Education? Our states and municipalities have leaked power to the feds for years in grabs for fed $$$. Now the ship is so bloated we can possibly turn it around.

Ok – i’m off YOUR soapbix now and dumpin this coffee ‘cuz I’m way too hyoed!

  4. Well, if we’re talkin’ “happiness,” I may have more work coming in (freelance writing), and I’m heading out to an actual job interview later today (where the hell is my Grecian Formula?). Oh, and thanks for tweeting my stuff last time…it is greatly appreciated.

  5. So, I’m a little confused. You have grandchildren? And also toddlers? Maybe I’m not reading your posts carefully enough.

I feel like I am reading this in a time warp! The temperature here is 90 and we still have four weeks till school starts and I have to deal with that nasty paperwork! Glad you are enjoying your peace and quiet. Unfortunately, for me,when Miss Dee goes back to school, so do I! 😊

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! I’m sure it will be 90 again here soon, but by the time you’re dealing with the atrocious paperwork, I bet it’ll be nice and cool for us both 😀

Well I backtracked to your previous post. The one about Bubba. When I tried to see it the first time there was an error so I couldn’t see it. What makes you think folks don’t like it when you write about Bubba? So you have a lot going on right now. Good stuff as opposed to root canal sort of stuff. I am just happy to be alive. As corny as that sounds it’s true. I am not real hip on a lot of rain. All those years in the desert made an addict out of me. However sitting in a dark bar when it is raining, drinking Manhattans is a singular pleasure. I am with you. More finger painting and animal crackers. Enjoy.

That post about Bubba got less than 100 views and last I saw, less than 20 likes. Maybe if you had trouble, others did, too. That makes me feel better, thanks!
I am also glad to be alive 😀 I love rain tho. I’ll be reading most of today. Manhattan-less.

Congratulations on the new grandchild! That’s wonderful. As for school forms, I hear you. I used to keep a photocopy of the filled-out form–just left the spots empty that would change from year to year. That way, I didn’t have to re-enter addresses, emergency contacts, etc. There was still plenty of information to fill in, but it was a small victory in time-saving. 🙂

Oh Carrie! That is brilliant! I don’t know if that would work here, since they’re color-coded, but when I get white ones…oh yes, so much yes!!!
I usta get so mad on post, because they’d ask for new contact numbers every year, but they never put them in the computer. Army people move a lot. After our cell numbers changed, the school would call someone from years ago, who lived states away, and she’d call me, “Sissy’s sick at school.”
If I take the time to update it, they should to!

Aw, congrats on the grandbaby! ❤

Little Man starts back on the 17th. The school has already "invited" us to a parent workshop this Saturday from 8am-12pm, plus an Open House and PTO meeting the day before school starts.

Congrats on the grandchild. I love animal crackers, so I’m with you on that note. Back to school already? Wow! That seems so early. I don’t think kids around here go back for two weeks, maybe three. I lose track, no kids going back to nothing here. I love the feast you threw together (except for the bean salad – three or four bean types is more than the one I actually eat) but cornbread? Oh yes.

  12. I haven’t eaten animal crackers in about ten years but I like them. LOL The weather has been wonderful so I’ve been busy trimming boxwoods, weeding and picking veggies in the garden. Tomorrow though we are off to check out a craft brewery. Long weekend of activity to celebrate ‘big’ anniversary on Sunday. Have a good weekend and avoid all new papers. 🙂

Awww… this entire post makes me happy. And friends that you can talk incessantly with are THE BEST THINGS EVER. Also? This line: “For the love of puppies, just put microchips in their fingers and scan them!” may have caused me to spew coffee all over my keyboard. So… thanks for that. 😉

This was just like my caffeine charged days with grandies, grown kids (for me) and a friend or visitor in the mixture. I am blessed with a chef for a son and a cook for an oldest daughter, Joey. At holidays I am in charge of desserts and beef cream cheese balls with crackers. In warm weather I am in charge of a seven ingredient an Italian whole wheat pasta salad. Your feast sounds “scrumdelumptious!” (Scrumptious with delicious, grandies use this made up word in variations. Maybe it came from an animated film?
Congratulations on grandbaby #2 and so glad everyone had this gathering.
Best friends are better (almost) than family, Joey.

Scrumdiddlyumptious is a word invented by Roald Dahl in the Willy Wonka book 😀
Sounds like your family gatherings are truly scrumdiddlyumptious! 😀

Oh, thanks Joey! I could not imagine they would have created their own word. But sometimes little ones substitute sounds as bd families adopt those words. 🙂

I still can’t get used to how early school starts in other parts of our U.S. of A., Joey. The kids will still be cavortin’ around here until the day after Labor Day. Enjoy the return of The Room.

Hell, yeah, I know what you mean about a friend where you sit down and pick up a conversation where it ended two, four, eight years ago. That’s a comfortable day and night, for sure. Yay for that in our lives.

Congratulations on the new grand. May the Mister handle diaper duty and you stay in charge of the new-fangled Animal Crackers. Those are some exotic beasts to munch these days. How advanced!

Who is HME? School already? I remember when we lived in Chicago that school would sometimes start in late August, but this early? Seems odd. We go back 9/9. I hate paper.

Your life sounds crazy busy! Crazy busy for me has always equated to unmanageable stress ( an indicator of my lack of flexibility)
My happiness today – this single mom went and saw Train Wreck with her beautiful grown 26 year old daughter and followed with lunch at our favorite hangout!
It’s when she leaves that a little loneliness hangs in the air.
