Still northeast of the center, but farther in than Indianapolis’s Old Northside, there is Woodruff Place.
Ah, Woodruff Place is a magical land for Joeys, where much of time has stood still for about 200 years.
Woodruff Place holds many of the city’s Grand Dames of Homes. I mean, massive old homes, deep and wide, plenty in the 5-6000 square foot category, with outbuildings two or three times the size of my house. Garages, former stables, enormous barns. Some serve as guest quarters, but many have been turned into duplexes and apartments.
Due to the planning and landscaping of Woodruff Place, while you’re there, it feels like you’re far from the city, when in fact, you’re smack dab in it.
It is so charming.
In June 2017, there will be a tour, and I do believe Beauty Queen and I need to take that tour.
Here’s today’s door:
Ooh! Aah!
Yes, the porch is crumbling, but try to remember, the porch belongs to a ‘small’ brick castle, okay?
Would you like to tour Woodruff Place?

Um, yeah – would love to tour! Just love cool old neighborhoods like that. Individual historic homes are great, but when they are all grouped like that exactly how the neighborhood was originally planned it’s awesome. And what an interesting stained glass window next to the door. Seems more modern to me! Also…on a technical note – love the snow! And I looked at my WP settings and don’t see anything getting in the way of comment replies. I have also noticed that I am able to comment back and forth with some other folks. WEIRD!

It really is weird. And kinda irritating, when I’ve typed out a long comment about architecture and stuff. Very glitchy bitchy on my end!
This is one of Indy’s original suburbs, and it feels graciously suburban.
That panel and stained glass gave me a very 1920’s feeling, how about you? Something about the shapes…and that almost lily. I suppose I may find out on the tour! 🙂

Yes, maybe! I don’t know much about that sort of thing at all. The tour will be fun! I’m going on a tour tomorrow night in my home town of South Windsor to see some historic homes decked out for the holidays. Going to have a drink with friends first to warm up 😉 try to do a super quick one word response to this and see what happens! If it doesn’t work I’ll know why!

I didn’t get a word so I guess it didn’t work 🙂 so annoyed. My WordPress settings allow nested comments (up to 10). I may mention it in my next post and see if others have come across it and then follow up with the theme developer.

I think that’s a good idea. I’ve taken a coupla photos to show you what happens. I’ll look and see if you have a Contact Me email.

I love this door. More specifically, I love the entrance. I love the off-center division between the two components and how it’s accetuated by the arches. I could go on, but suffice it to say that I love everything about this entrance. Good job Joey!

That stained glass window is definitely different! Especially for the times. I wonder if it’s the original. You’ll have to let us know!

I thought I knew Indy pretty good, never seen this though. Sounds like it worth a trip next time I’m in Indy.

Oh, Gary, you and the crew should come up one sunny, good-weathered weekend and I will bore your heads off with all the pretty places 🙂

My oldest competes annually in the Pokemon video game national championships which take place in Indianapolis. If I go there with him this summer, I’ll definitely check out Woodruff Place. I would LOVE it. But I’m not sure the dates will work out for me. Plus, as a 19-year-old, he might not want his mom tagging along. Sigh.

It’s a small area, only three streets, about 9 blocks. Maybe 12. You know I can’t math, Carrie! Anyway, you could easily walk it in less than two hours at a peaceful, strolling, photo-snapping pace.

Whenever I am in Woodruff Place I always feel as if I am Gatsby heading to some swank party. That poor neighborhood has been much abused over the years. I went to Tech so I spent some time exploring that area. The homes on North Meridian may be more grand and in better repair but that area just doesn’t have the panache of Woodruff place.

Right? You said it!
You went to Tech, huh? Wow, you’re a REAL city dweller!
Drove up Meridian last night and was disappointed at how few of the homes had been decorated for the season. Why, I can remember when 90% were lit up beautifully. I was bummed.

I know it just doesn’t seem right does it? Meridian and Washington Blvd. were both 2 street you could count on for bright lights. Maybe the home owners are getting too old to decorate.

That may be. If not, times really are tough, eh?

I love this one. The stained glass, and the ill fitting concrete steps tell of many remodels. It almost looks like there were Mormon doors at one time. Some houses used to have one door for the man and his guests, and a different door for the wives. You can still see them in Southern Utah. Don’t quite understand this one, but I’ve seen them.

Fascinating. I have never heard of such a thing. This door is by far my fave in Woodruff Place, and they are all good doors 🙂

A tour? Sign me up! If we ever do make it out that way I’ll let you know – I love neighborhoods like that. Love the stone fence in that first pic and the stained glass in the door pic. Great post Joey!

I would love to tour Woodruff Place! That is a lovely grand front door. That window is so unusual with the different shapes but I like it 🙂

Oh, YEAH, I would love to tour Woodruff Place! When I used to go out and about more than now, my favorite trip would be to an estate with gardens and house tour. Eye candy. 🙂 Great shots!

There’s a Peace sign in the stained glass window, Joey. The arched double doorway was beautiful. Your saying that this building
is like a (small brick) castle made me smile. So sweet.
I really would like to tour this Woodruff Place. I think you know I have friends I can stay with so if you ever have a bloggers get together at a park or somewhere like a restaurant, I’m there, Joey.
We may never make the old homes tour.
I enjoyed the stone corner on the wall, too. 🙂

I think the way you see the peace sign is like how I see a lily. They’re not actually there, but the semblance of them is. We share similar vision 😉
As the tour approaches, I’ll be sure to mention it!

Gorgeous area, and I like the door but love the entrance. Wonderful craftsmanship that you just don’t see today. Stone walls were handsome too. Yes, I’d like to take the tour. 🙂
