SoCS — Food

FOOD!?! What was Linda thinkin?!? I could write about food foreverrr!
“Did you hear what happened to Joey? I guess Linda told her to write a stream of consciousness post about food and now she can’t stop. She’s in some sort of trance…”

I’ll just tell you what I’ve been into lately.

Raisin Bran — I am a serial cold cereal eater, meaning I eat one cereal until I burn out on it and then I pick another cereal and eat it until I burn out on it. I do not try new cereals. New cereals scare me. I cycle through Raisin Bran, Shredded Wheat, Cheerios, Basic 4, Great Grains, Rice Chex, and Rice Krispies. Now and again, I get an urge for Cap’n Crunch, Frosted Flakes, or Marshmallow Mateys, but my body really doesn’t like all that sugar. Or coloring. My mother knew best. She must be so proud.

Oranges & Pears — I still buy blueberries, melon, grapes, apples, and bananas, but in the winter, my consumption of oranges and pears shoots way up because they’re cheapest.

Olives — Olives go with almost everything, or at least my taste buds think they do. Black olives, green olives, stuffed olives, Kalamatas — all the olives are belong to me.

Baby Cucumbers — Tiny little green tubes of cooling crisp. In the dill-dressed sour cream, in the hummus, in the balsamic…with a side of olives, yeah?

Ice Cream — Oh how I love ice cream. I recently found this ice cream called “Peanut Butter World” and it is the best ice cream in the whole wide world and it’s a limited time flavor which means I really do need a deep freeze.

Goat Cheese Pizza — Goat cheese pizza is what’s taking up all the room in my stupid tiny side-by-side freezer. I…Y’all just don’t know. That tangy melty goat cheese…Goat cheese pizza is my lover now. With a lil salad and some olives.

Havarti Cheese — Do I even need to explain that?!? You know what it’s good with? OLIVES.

Pickles — Pickles really fix my salty savory cravings. Did you know Twenty Tap will sell you a container of their pickles? And for a dollar, you can get a giant pickle at Fresh Thyme.

pickles

Kefir — Wallaby kefir, to be exact. Peach, strawberry, blueberry, vanilla — and give me a straw so I can suck up every last drop!

I promise I eat lotsa veggies. I eat most of my veggies at dinner when I serve the flesh of animals to my carnivorous peoples.

The Mister and Sassy are slightly less carnivorous than our dog, who loves these.

femur

I usually photograph The Mister’s plate because I don’t eat the meat. He usually has a green plate.

My plate is usually yellow and often looks more like this:

When I am carnivorous, we get butter burgers from Culver’s. If you haven’t tried those, you should not, because they are delicious and bad for you, but if you insist on being that way, I do not recommend the single butter burger with cheese and everything on it. You might slice it in half and as you savor each diabolical bite, you may marvel at how wonderful it is to live in the Midwest.

That Midwest thinking will also take you to The Pawn Shop Pub, where you will fill yourself on half a breaded tenderloin sammich, also with everything on it, extra pickles on the side, and a cup of beer cheese soup, with oyster crackers.

It’s dangerous here. I mean, really, local barbecue smoking, wafting down the street, knocking on the door…

See, I gotta balance it out.  The best way to counter heavy, fried, fatty meals is to eat sushi. Ooh sushi sounds good, dun’t it?

    GOAT CHEESE!!! YYYEEAASSSSSS!!! 😛

Also, Ive been on a pickle thing lately. I do like them, just not often, or in mild bursts. My favorites are the ones with hot peppers like habaneros & stuff. OMG so good. lol.

Its also the only way my stomach tolerates spicy anymore, you know. 😛

I just cannot do spicy at night any more. If I do, I gotta hit the apple cider vinegar before and after. I eat my spicies before 5, the earlier, the better. Simon had me buy these Vlasic spicy pickles, stackers, they were very good, check those out. I’ve just never met a pickle I didn’t like.
Dude, that goat cheese pizza…I’m not big on pizza overall, but I can eat that goat cheese pizza like some kinda drunken frat boy!

This is your best SoCS yet. Food. I live to eat. I agree with everything you said about food, with the possible exception of cold cereal. Not that I don’t like your choices it’s just that I eat less cold cereal the older I get. Don’t know why;just do. My default snack is cheese & crackers with pickles and olives. Add some dead animal and it’s a Poo Poo Platter. Whatever the store across from Twenty Tap is they have an olive bar. You can buy containers of olives. Take some of your baby cukes and make some pickles;it is easy. Have you been to the Sushi Bar in Broad Ripple, on Broad Ripple Ave? Very good. I am sure I eat more meat than you do,but I prefer fresh fish, whenever I can afford it. Tonight I am dining on marrow bones with toasted bread. I was going to make a parsley salad but I refuse to pay $1.79 for a bunch of flat leaf parsley. My partner has never had them so this should be fun. Now I need to eat something.

      Thank you!
Never been in that shop across from Twenty Tap, (Isn’t it a Marsh thing? I hate Marsh.) but Fresh Thyme has an antipasto bar as well — as did the commissary, but I’m okay with jars and whatnot 😛
I have not been to sushi bar in Broad Ripple. We go to Wasabi on 82nd.
You must check out the fish at Fresh Thyme. Have you been there yet? It’s got a beautiful, reasonable meat, deli, and fish selection — Benson! They have real butchers! They even make their own sausages!
In the summer, I grow parsley. I freeze it in water in the fall and run out about now. :/

Never been to Fresh Thyme, will change that. Caplinger at 75th and Shadeland has a beautiful selection of fresh fish. You can also eat there as well. They have a small menu. The last time I was there oysters were $1.59 each and they shuck ’em for you to eat there. I usually buy sausage at Klaus’. It isn’t as funky as Smoking Goose but it is cheaper. I think the closest Fresh Thyme to me is the one on 82 nd St. Will definitely check it out. I need a source for bones.

I’ve only found bones at the com, Meijer, and Fresh Thyme. We do need to eat at Caplinger’s. Maybe one day for lunch 🙂
Oh, and I’m going to try refrigeration pickles this summer. I’ve never grown cukes, but I think if I pickle them, I can make it worth my time! I am terrified of canning, but I can jar and refrigerate stuff!

Well with your appetite for pickles refer pickles will be great for you. I got my marrow bones at Kincaids, but they were 5 bucks per pound and frozen. I guess that may well be the going price for femur bones but I am always on the lookout for a better and/or cheaper product. I think you will really like Caplingers.

My husband loves cereal -he could eat it all three meals -and be happy. I agree with you about goat cheese, and black olives -fruits, and I am crazy about vegetables -raw or cooked. Just about any vegetable will draw me to a table.

I do eat meat -but a meal of veggies and fruit would make me happy -oh, and a slice of wonderful downy bread. Or, Asian rice, dumplings and Kimchi -my daily lunch.

  5. Damn, you ended with sushi. I really have to find some now! Marshmallow Mateys – is that a real thing, or a Joey term for Lucky Charms? Also, I absolutely adore goat cheese. I was eating it the other day and just kept it in my mouth to try to imagine a way to describe it. I could come up with no words because I am a writer but not a genius. I will have to try it on pizza.

Marshmallow Mateys are generic Lucky Charms. They come in a huge bag. My kids love them, but I don’t buy them all the time, because my mother is so wise 😉
Goat cheese is indescribably good, I agree. I stick goat cheese in grits, quinoa, crumble it over pasta, smear it on bread and crackers, and of course, bruschetta! Mmm!

I might run with you about 50% today. No olives for me. You can have them all. I twill fight for my share of cucumbers though. Maybe I’ll distract you with some goat cheese. I don’t eat enough cereal to ever burn out. These days, it’s special K, but I wouldn’t turn down a bowl of Frosted Flakes. There has been kefir in the house, my wife’s idea, I’m not going there.

I TOLD YOU ABOUT THAT KEFIR. I was right, eh? Good kefir. 🙂 We still try to lick out the glasses so we don’t miss any of it.

Love olives. Love pickles. Love HAVARTI CHEESE. I didn’t know other people actually loved havarti cheese…thought it was just me. I can’t do goat cheese, though. Too…something for me. But I love cheese. And fruit. And veggies. And meat (sorry, Joey). And ice cream (or gelato). But I don’t do cereal too often. I’m on a homemade granola kick (gotta make more tomorrow) that has rice crispies and mini chocolate chips and almonds and honey and maple syrup. But that’s mostly for yogurt topping. I don’t eat breakfast so my cereal eating is pretty limited.

But yes, so much yes, on the food. Who couldn’t talk about food forever? Good thing I just finished lunch or I’d be starving by now…

Yes, you were right about the kefir! Now the girls are drinking it and we’re out of it and I feel a bit spiteful and will actually need to shop on a bloody weekend!!! Rawr!
I mix up my brekkie a lot. I get on kicks, but I pretty much eat breakfast twice most days. Somethin light and small at 7 and somethin bigger 9-10.I still haven’t made my own granola, although I do keep looking at the bins…I like wheat germ and chia on my yogurt or oatmeal…Moo loves granola bars, and from what I’ve read if you make the bars, it’s best to destroy your kitchen and make as many as you can at once?
Obviously you should come over on cheese night, where we can gorge ourselves on cheese, olives, pickles, and fruit! 😛

Ha, I’m going to start a cult with that Wallaby Kefir stuff! I keep telling everyone about it. But yeah, going to the grocery on the weekend is no good. We just tried Aldi and a local Asian market for fresh fruits and veggies and man they were both jam packed with people!
Best thing about making granola is you can pretty much add whatever suits your fancy every time you make it. I just happened to have a pretty base set of ingredients that I like to include. And yes, if you’re going to do bars, do them all at once. I found a no-bake recipe that was pretty good, but you still gotta melt marshmallows and butter (or marshmallow fluff and butter) to mix in. They were somethin’ tasty I tell ya. We cut them into squares so we could eat more at one sitting! LOL
        Call me for cheese night!

If you wanna share the no-bake recipe, I’m more apt to do one you’ve done. Perhaps this summer, with Moo’s help.

That kefir, though, OH EM GEE! I’ve always liked it, but that brand is just sooooooo delicious!!! Moo and I just went out, got more. I got everyone her own flavor, so I don’t have the sadness of all gone again! Haha! Can we get some hats for the kefir club? 😛

Here’s the no bake recipe. Adding the brown sugar makes it so MmMm dark and delicious. I also used marshmallow fluff instead of marshmallows because the marshmallows I had were old and didn’t melt right the first time. Make sure you use really fresh marshmallows if you want to use those instead of fluff. http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2014/04/chewy-gluten-free-granola-bars-recipe.html
I know, the Wallaby kefir is so much better than any of the other brands we tried. It’s the only reason I’d be stopping at our local organic market and/or Whole Foods on a regular basis! LOL I wish my regular grocer carried it!
I’m not entirely sure what our cult hats should look like? Giant bottles of kefir? Giant wallabys? Wallaby ears? 🙂

              OH WALLABY EARS!!! 😀
I know, my search for your recommended kefir took me to a new store, which is a little inconvenient in location, but has turned out to be THE BEST for fish, cheese, produce — oh I should stop.
Thanks for the recipe. I will make it with Moo, probably over spring break or in summer, but when I do it, I’ll make a post and you’ll see them. Do you want a pingback?

Yay, glad you found a new store with yummy foodstuffs. We have to go out of the way to our organic market to find the kefir, too. But they don’t have good fish, cheese, or produce. Boo. They DO have a couple of gluten free items that I can’t find at my regular grocery store, so that’s a bonus. Also, they carry my weirdo toothpaste. 🙂
I finally made my granola today. I’m really happy with how it came out, so I’ve been snitching pieces all day. LOL It’s not the no-bake bars, but it’s totally worth it for topping yogurt. If only I can save some for the yogurt and stop eating it alone.
You can do a pingback if you want. Or if you remember, at that point. LOL Either way, hope they turn out to be tasty for ya!

Moo got these GF coconut chocolate bars at Aldi, I don’t know what you think, but we think they’re tasty.
What’s your weirdo toothpaste? I liked Crest Pro, but it has those plastic things in it, bad for the environment, so I went back to the Sensodyne. I has the sensitive teeth (of course!!!)

I am not the big fan of coconut so I usually avoid the coconutty bars. Kind of why I started trying to make my own so I could use my own favored ingredients.
I has the sensitive teeth, too! I wanted no fluoride and no SLS so I found Kiss My Face sensitive toothpaste. The Orange mint flavor takes some getting used to, but it otherwise works for me. I originally bought it online but it’s actually cheaper at the organic market, which is totally weird.

Not a big fan of cold cereals myself but Honey has been going through a number of these supposedly healthier Kashi brand mixes that she really enjoys. Small rocks and hay is what I call it but que voulez-vous, different strokes right?
You can have my olives, I never liked the texture; and my pickles too, I really gotta stay vigilant about my salt intake.
Stir-fried veggies and a bit of dead animal could be my supper every night, well except for the fact that there’s also pasta. And bread of course mmmmm. Plus it’ll be BBQ season again soon – ahh crap I better stop there or I’ll be here all day 🙂

So interesting to read about someone else’s relationship with food–in the specifics the details like this. I don’t know why I don’t eat more cereal. Maybe it’s that if I don’t eat some kind of hot food in the morning, I feel icky. Why don’t I eat cereal for lunch then? Problem is I have a gluten free house for the most part, so it can’t be my favorite, LIFE cereal. Or oat flakes, my other favorite. Or Grapes Nuts.
