When We Talk Weather

I’ve begun to complain about the rain.

pluviophile_rain_lover_2014-02-192-1

Yes, I, the pluviophile, have had enough of the rain.

Even more embarrassing, I generally make fun of, roll my eyes at, and Pfft at people who complain about the weather.
Grown-ass Northerners who ought to know better by now. Especially the ones who live along the Great Lakes.

Bitches be all, “Oh my God, it’s fucking snowing already!” and I be like, “Bitch, get a grip, you live in a state they call THE MITTEN, of course it’s fuckin snowin.”

I have never, and will never understand how anyone has lived here for decades and still goes on about the snow. It’s going to snow every single year. It’s a given. It’s just gonna.
Snow, ice, icicles, ice storm, squalls, sleet, thundersnow, snow, snow, snow. Hard-packin, flurries, a dusting of powder — whatever, it’s all frozen water. SNOW.
Complainin about the snow ain’t gonna make it stop.

(I love snow, too. Snow means it’s not too hot.)

When it doesn’t snow here, it rains.
This makes me sooo happy. Man, I love the rain. Just love it!

Look how green and glossy!

I love the sound of rain.

I open the windows when it rains.

I am a Bona Fide Petrichor Connoisseur. If you haven’t smelled the rain north of the Mason-Dixon and east of the Mississippi, you haven’t lived.

April showers bring May flowers.
This year, April showers brought May showers.
And more May showers.
And more May showers.
And more May showers.
Seriously, you’d think May would have more important things to do.

This rain is stunting my garden. It’s flooding my seeds. I can’t get a stretch of sunny days to till. It’s keepin me from weeding, while makin the weeds grow even faster. It’s makin my grass grow too fast.
My dog is wet every damn night. Don’t nobody wanna cuddle a wet dog.
It makes for crappy outdoor photos.

(Here’s a rainy train for you, Dan.)

train.rain

Driving in the rain is playin Hell with my anxiety.

So we’re clear I’m not exaggerating, the local weatherman said this month, we’ve only had one day without measurable rain. We’ve gotten 16″ of rain so far this year, and that’s up almost 3″ from normal.
The good news is, I’ve mastered the wiper speeds on Bonnie Blue.

Spring is always wet here. This is excessive. I have stopped looking at the weather forecast. I can’t even with this rain.

The Mister and I commiserate about the rains. He complains there’ve been no hammock days.
He heard it’s supposed to be a long, hot summer. He said we’ve had mild summers since we got home. I agreed.
“Remember when I was cold at the Fourth of July parade?”
“Yup.”
“Remember that year we came home to visit in June and it was 105°?”
“No.”
“Well we did. Left Georgia to come here and it was even hotter! There was a drought, remember? Dad’s grass was pokey as hay.”
“Oh yeah.”
“And the girls didn’t even notice. Just accepted it, like they were still in Georgia and it was sposta be like that.”
“Like grass is supposed to feel like walkin on needles.”

And then we laughed and laughed.

Complainin about the rain ain’t gonna make it stop.

Let’s complain anyway. How’s the weather in your neck of the woods?

What?! Complaining about the weather is a national pastime! It’s too hot, too cold, too humid, too wet, too whatever ….
Complaining about the weather seems to make the regular day-to-day stuff of life manageable. Any and all irritations can be projected onto the weather. It’s a beautiful system. I – for you – fully support it and contribute to it on a regular basis 😉

Let’s agree that hot and humid is just wrong … at any time.

The only time I don’t complain about the heat is when I’m floating in a body of cool water. Unfortunately, it’s not a safe place to sleep at night … although I have considered it on occasion :/

I want to go back to last weekend. I was off on Friday…it was sunny and 82 degrees. Saturday and Sunday were cooler, in the 60’s, but beautiful, dry blue skies. That’s the best weather we’ve had this spring. Otherwise, it hasn’t been very warm. The rain isn’t bothering me so much, it’s the cold, dampness from not being warm. Sends a chill down my spine, can’t warm up. I want to start bicycling to work and haven’t been able to think about it. Sucks.

Then again, it could be worse. It could be snowing. I’ve already complained about the weather on Facebook this morning, so I’ll just stop here and hope we all see better weather soon.

I do hate when the cold seeps in and I can’t get warm. To be fair, that usually only happens to me in the first two months of the year, but yeah, it’s uncomfortable and I hate it, so I feel for you. I strongly suspect my seeds feel like that…
I want you to be able to cycle to work as well.
Today looks nice so far, no warm, but dry and sunny. Not sure how long it will last.

I don’t like driving in the rain either. Especially in the dark when my vision isn’t so great. I have to white-knuckle it all the way.

Spring has been teasing us here since early March: we get one nice sunny day followed by ten of unseasonably cool and gray. It was sunny and mid 20’s here yesterday (high 70’s for you) so naturally guess what’s in the forecast for the weekend? Yup, cool and gray. Probably no doorscursions or gardening for me this weekend – and don’t even get me started on my poor neglected hammock 😦

Lack of hammock days is a real bother, isn’t it? You know, I like it 12-16 and preferably gray and rainy, but my garden needs sun and warmth! My garden needs hammock days! 🙂

  5. Let it be said, I prefer 4 seasons. Rain happens. The lawn is better than ever. And I sleep under covers at night. What’s not to love ??? exit singing “the sun’ll come out…tomorrow.” ????? 🌞

We’ve had too much rain lately. The showers are supposed to be here in April, followed by sunny warm days, but this year it is backwards. My basil starts are so soggy that they’re laying on the ground, like sleeping kindergarteners during nap time. And the rosemary just looks at me, pleading for some sunlight. The weather is wacky, that’s for sure.

Thank you! Yes, my basil are also drowned babies, and I speak of the half of them that came up!
My rosemary’s happy, I suppose. Who knows what the onions and carrots are thinkin. Maybe they’re drowned in there, too.
You are absolutely right. April is supposed to set the water table and May is supposed to be THE BEST TIME TO PLANT! Not this year. Poor things.

You ought to like today. Sunny and temp. in the 50’s. I know I hate rainy days. I prefer the sun of the Southwest but I decided to return to Indiana knowing the unpredictability of its weather. So if I don’t like it out doors I stay in. However if I had a choice it would be rain over snow. A walk in the rain can be nice, even a hard rain. Snow storm, not so much.

Really? Thanks for telling me I ought to like today. It has looked nice so far! 🙂

I agree, snow is sometimes harder to navigate through, and people drive crazy in snow…that makes it much more dangerous!

Sorry about the rain. Thanks for the mention and for the picture of the train. Even in the rain, I like watching them. We are ending this week with some rain in the forecast, but we did have a string of 4 1/2 sunny days (following a solid week of rain). Unfortunately, the sunny days were work days and the rain will fall on the weekend 😦

I did take an afternoon off. My wife got her garden tilled, so I’m not going to complain.

    Rain – train – complain – there’s poetry in there somewhere 🙂

Mild simmers? What’s that? 😉 It’s been storming a lot around here. So I’m all freaked out tornadoes that rarely happen, but at least it cools things a bit. Another week or so and it’ll be real feel 90s every day and I’ll want to go into hibernation until late September.

I know you’re right. I tell you, after 7 Southern summers, a mild summer here will leave you chilly at the Fourth of July parade. Wearin long sleeves and huddlin with your dog for warmth! :O
Summers here are mostly what other people call “nice weather.”

I feel you sister! Tilled up a garden a month ago and haven’t even begun to do anything in it. Every single freaking day! I’m going to be jumping bunnies the next time I actually get a chance to mow it and that is if I don’t have to rent a bushhog!

I also love the rain. One of the reasons I live where I do. But usually, we get a misty sort of rain, At most, a drizzle. This year, because of SUPER EL Nino, the beloved weather superhero by Marvel, we got SOAKED! I actually got a little tired of it. It set the spring off early too. Now it is sunny and beautiful, but I can’t even go outside in it because of those stupid antibiotics.

  18. It’s been raining here for the last three weeks. And you’re right, it’s difficult to get any gardening done. We’re supposed to shear our sheep tomorrow. I’m hoping for a little sunshine.

    Have a nice…and dry weekend! ☀️

  23. It is going to be in the 70’s today and drop to the mid 30’s tomorrow night. That’s not exactly what one would call conducive for the garden. 😦 I can normally go with the flow of the weather but after a few days of gray, gloomy, wet weather my mojo needs some sun. I was out working one day this week and I actually had sweat running down my face. I know you wouldn’t like that, but it beats gray for me. 🙂

  24. I am one of those “Mitten state” residents, have been since 1990, when I came up here from FL. I live in a city right on Lake Michigan, in fact have lived along the coast of this lake for over 36 years. (Oh, wow! Can it actually be that long ago??) We had a very mild winter, and I too like the snow, before it gets all run over and dirty. I love going to bed to the sound of rain, and I’m not complaining about it. It has brought out the new leaves, and the view out my windows is now green.
