SoCS — Scrabble

If you played Scrabble with me, you’d know I’m aces with two-letter words. But you probably don’t play Scrabble with me. Gobs of my friends play Scrabble. With other people. I’ve been playing Scrabble with the same six people forever. Sometimes others invite me to games and then they stop playing and I take forfeit for the win.

Here are my stats:
Victories 56%
438 Wins, 329 Losses, 2 Draws
144 Bingos
Best Game Score 473
Best Word ‘CRAZIES’ for 112 points

I love Scrabble.
High scores and tricky placement thrill me.

I know, you already thought I was geeky enough and now you hadda read that.

I used to play with strangers, because you can pick ‘Random Opponent’ but one day a woman accused me of cheating because I made a good word too quickly, and I decided strangers are whiny losers.

A friend of a friend started a game with me and then told me I needed to take it easy on him because he doesn’t play as well as our friend. I told him I wouldn’t let him win and played a 66-point word. Then he used all caps to tell me I wasn’t playing fair. I resigned.

Sometimes I play in French. It’s hard for me to play in French, but I think it’s good for my brain, and good for my friend who so often plays me in English.

When I had Scrabble on my phone, I played the app itself. It always wins. But! I learned a lot of weird useful words like IXORA and JAUPS and TILAK.

Also, there are glitches.
This has happened to me TWICE.

scrabble

My husband played Scrabble with me for awhile, and he cheats. I know this because I live with him and not only do I know his vocabulary limits but I’m his spellcheck at least three times a week. Recently I’ve taught him the difference between peak, peek, and pique, spelled courtesy for him, and discouraged him from ever using the word layed.

In the last year or so, my mother has begun playing Scrabble with me. She likes all the posts where I’ve lost. I mean, literally, she clicks Like on them. Sometimes she even takes the time to congratulate my friends for beating me.

    You rock! I’m in awe.

My mother is a master Scrabble player. She wipes the floor with me. But I blame the app she consults. Isn’t that technically cheating? 😉

I would play Scrabble with you, Joey. I would also challenge you to a game or two of Bananagrams. I love those type of games, but don’t get to play them often enough.

Love this! Love Scrabble! I do the Words w/Friends on FB, and it’s fun. I have the Scrabble game for my PC and play it all the time with the computer. The best is the actual board game, but no one here every wants to play, so have to wait til we visit my daughter in MO…we have a standing order for a few games every time. …yeah, what’s up with it telling us there’s no such word…!!

Right? That is a massive fail. DRYING is such a basic word!
I enjoy the board game, but you can guess no one here wants to play it, either. :/ I don’t enjoy the mathing though, so the electronic games are my friend that way. 🙂

  6. You would be perfect for my friend Robert Rack on FB..when you beat him, please tell him Myra sent you! He pisses me off with those two letter words.
    Don’t worry he won’t hit on you, he’s such a nerd. 🙂

  7. I used to play Scrabble, but after an unpleasant experience with an online “friend” — who because of Scrabble is no longer a friend — I won’t play the game anymore. For a while I played against the computer, but I’ve given that up now, too. I think my brain is getting old and tired. I’d rather work cryptograms or puzzles in the puzzle magazines instead of playing online.

I do enjoy a cryptogram now and again as well.
I’m sorry for your unfortunate friend-Scrabble-unfriend situation.

      • I hadn’t played in years when she asked me to join her online for a few games. She knew she could easily beat me, and that would help improve her rating. But then, when I started getting better, she didn’t care for it so much. During one game, she actually asked me to please forfeit the game so it wouldn’t hurt her rating, and I decided it was easier to just forfeit the friendship. It still steams me to think about it.

Oh that is wretched! Ratings over friendship? No. How about being glad for your improvement? That’s what friends do!
I think it’s better to play those who challenge me, just like playing anything else, practice makes perfect and one likes a worthy opponent.

          • It left a bad taste in my mouth for online scrabble. There are other things I enjoy, other games I like, so I just stay away from Scrabble. There are too many cut-throat players online. If I’m going to play, I’ll just have a fun and friendly game with my daughter — in real life.

So I wrote this whole big thing here and the page refreshed on me.
I dont play scrabble, but if you had the board game and we were neighbors, you bet I would 😉
I do play chess against my computer, and Ive beaten it. Once. Lol
I have a collection of casual “puzzle” type games on my computer that are REALLY cool. Its called Simon Tatham’s Puzzles. Some are $%^&#$%^ HARD, others, not so. Theyre all fairly basic, and dont need to be installed to run. The Flip game is my favorite. AND I JUST found out theres an app. Lol

I’m in the Mister’s box. I don’t spell all that well and my vocabulary isn’t my strength. I will play Scrabble or Words WF with my daughter, but I usually lose. My best word was Que for a ton of points, but that only happened once. I don’t whine, but I get mad that Star Trek words don’t count.

  12. Boggle is the king of games in our family, Joey, and my eldest daughter is just like you. We all try to beat her – even making her play when she’s dead tired and ready for bed. Never works. 😮

I love Scrabble so much that I have it included in my details section of my Facebook profile. Won a Scrabble tournament once, too. 😀 I stick to Words With Friends for the app since that’s the one my friends use. I will throw games with people every 2-3 games though so they won’t stop playing with me like Sam did for a while.

Not only is this fascinating in its own right, but I am writing a piece right now about my father and games and wrote about how he always won at Scrabble by mastering 2 letter words (and cheating). I am not surprised that YOU are a master without cheating. I love what you did with CRAZIES, but have no idea how you managed that. Hahaha. I had to laugh about the peek thing. It always annoys me when I read pique spelled incorrectly. Peek is annoying in genealogy, too. My great-great grandmother was born a Paak. Or you could say Paake. Or Peake or Peek or Pake. You could say that because it’s all been said and written before! Every document is different. Every person in the family spells it differently. Annoying as anything.

I am also annoyed by the problems of peak. peek, and pique. I blame the fact that people hear a word and never read it. I’m more often the opposite, I read it and don’t know how to say it.
That’s interesting about your family’s name. I don’t have any of that, but I know it’s a common problem. My uncle did genealogy to a certain point, but only that paternal side, since my great-grandmother was Seminole, she had no ‘last name’. I wonder how so many Americans get around that? Anyway, language is so evolutionary!
And thank you for the compliment 🙂

I liked playing scrabble. Then I stopped playing it with 8 years old and started playing it with adults and I stopped liking scrabble. You just can’t get the same reactions from adults to words like ‘fart’ and ‘poop’ like you can from children. I don’t have a very high vocabulary, that’s why I like playing swear word scrabble.

I haven’t played scrabble in years. I can imagine you as the Queen of Scrabble. How do you behave badly when you play Chess? You don’t spike your opponent’s King when you win or toss the whole board when you lose do you?
