I’ve mentioned The Big Blue House a few times, because it’s a house associated with gobs of pleasant memories for me. Even more for The Mister and Drew, since before they lived there, their grandparents lived there.
Over the last decade, we’ve watched the steady decline of the exterior of The Big Blue House. Sadly, The Big Blue House had been lost to her owner and then neglected entirely. This is not, I repeat NOT how the house looked when my in-laws lived there. She used to be a stand-out gem.
Fortunately, someone is fixing up The Big Blue House now.
Last month, she got all new windows. She used to have a big bay window and casement windows.
Last week, she got a new door.
It’s a good door, hm? I like it.
Really, I like the idea that someone is putting some love into her again. I’m sure I will one day return to you with an after photo, but for now, I’m pleased there’s progress.

Sounds like good news, I’m glad. The ornamental carving above looks like binoculars to me, like that Google headquarters, you know? 🙂

Not really, but if it’s like clouds, we all see something different at times 🙂

It is always good to see a house reclaimed. Good for them. And good for the Big Blue House

It always nice to see a house being restored to its former glory! (as opposed to torn down to make room for the new)

I hope they are successful in bringing back some of the beauty you remember. IF they do, give us an update.

You know more about this stuff than I do, do you think new siding is next?

It looks as if they are trying to preserve it, but maybe they just want to get all the windows, doors and do-dads in place before re-siding. That way, things are still protected. It’s almost impossible to match siding that has been exposed to weather and sunlight.

Yes, this is much faded. I drive by it frequently, so I’ll be sure to follow-up 🙂

I like the behind the scenes ideas you hint at. It’s great that someone is giving the old girl a makeover and appears to be doing it right.

Reminds me of everytime I go by my deceased great grandmother’s house and see the shape it has fallen into. Glad to see “The Big Blue House” is getting a makeover.

I know, right? I hate watching once beloved homes fall into ruin. It’s so sad.

I like that it’s getting some TLC. I like the new door too. It’s very similar to my new front door!

They’ve got some serious work ahead but the doors and windows are a very important start. It’s good to see it’s moving in the right direction after years of decline, right? And yes that door is purdy 🙂

Great to see old buildings getting a new lease of life.

I love that gorgeous blue house. Does the mailbox have a slot in the shape of a mustache? If so, it’s cool. It not…………it’s still cool. 🙂

It does not, sorry to say. When my in-laws lived there, they had a big brass letterbox. I do believe what looks like a mustache (I see it, too) may be the remnants of an American eagle.

Aha! I quite like the idea of a mustache but an eagle would be cool, too.

Wonder if the new owner will keep it blue? If not, you’ll have to start calling it the house formerly known as the big blue house. 😉

Good point. We probably won’t though, lol! 😛 I do wonder. I’m anxious to see.

That pretty door and new windows give much hope that the rest of the house will look fantastic when the new owners are done with remodeling. It will be fun to see the “after” photo.

That’s a really cute house. I like the shape, if that makes sense.

I actually have read several references to the big blue house. I am glad you reminded me of your in-laws being previous owners before you were owners. 🙂
The bay window must have been beautiful, Joey. I like the Colonial look of the white frame above the door, possibly Federal look?
It is always nice to see progress in renovations and upkeep of a beloved home. ❤

It was redone VERY Federal, yes. And it was very pretty. I didn’t live here, but The Mister’s family did.
Gosh, Robin, I really need to catch up on your posts! I wish you had email subscriptions!

Looking forward to seeing an after photo. Do you by any chance have photos from your grandparent’s day?

The Mister’s grandparents, not mine. I don’t, but I’m sure his mother does — but I dare not ask, as she has like, 50 years of photos…
It used to be gray slate with white and red metal awnings. It was pretty then, too, but it did look very 1960.

hahaha – I can understand your reluctance. A simple question could have you tumbling down the memory lane rabbit hole in the blink of an eye 😉

Very nice new door; now they have to renovate the old blue house up to the standard of the new door.

I’m so glad it’s getting fixed up! You have to be happy about that. Some years after my grandparents had passed away, we went to visit the farm and the house was so neglected that it hurt my heart.

I love the new door, but mourn the loss of the bay window. I’m a sucker for a bay window. I’m looking forward to the “after” picture!

I hated the bay window because it faced east and in the morning, I often felt the need to seek shade, but yes, it was lovely.

Nice door and even better hope for further updates.:-) We have a lovely Cape Cod across the street that has always been a handsome home inside and out. A divorced woman with adult daughter and boyfriend moved in and haven’t mowed the grass in a year. A year! This wonderful New England cape looks like its been abandoned. Here’s to the new owners of the big blue house and their hard work. 🙂

That is tragic! How ridiculous is that? Surely you have some mower guys…I can’t fathom.
The people across the street from us were mowin weird for awhile, but they seem to have finally gotten the hang of it. I wonder if people who don’t mow also don’t vacuum…lol!
