SoCS — Taste the 80s

I am a serious soda junkie. I limit myself, but it is SO HARD. If there were no consequences I would drink soda all damn day and night. I can’t. I have to be careful about the caffeine, and I’m too old to dismiss empty calories.

You maybe don’t think soda’s a proper addiction, but I assure you it is. If you give me a Coca-Cola, my eyes will shine like diamonds. You can literally see the rush after I take the first drink. Surge of high fructose corn syrup, caffeine high, oh yeah, it’s an addiction.

For this reason, I no longer keep Coca-Cola in my house.

I keep various types of soda and seltzer in a cabinet. I don’t mean I keep some in the fridge and store the remainder in a cabinet. I don’t. I keep my soda in a cabinet. At room temperature. And that’s how I drink it.
For some reason, this freaks people out.

When Benson took me to the barbecue joint I was so excited that they had Peach Faygo. I realize Faygo is a regional soda, so many of you have no idea what I’m talking about, but Faygo is the soda of my youth. I was am? hypoglycemic and my mother would allow me diet Faygo on the weekends. It comes in a pile of flavors and colors, and peach is my fave.

I ordered mac and cheese and greens and fried okra and a Peach Faygo.
The barbecue lady came back to the window and she said there was no Peach Faygo. I said, “Aw, that’s so sad. I was lookin forward to that.” She said, “Well we have some, but it’s not cold.”
“THAT’S OKAY!”
“You sure?”
“Yes! Yes I’m sure. Peach Faygo, mmhm!”

I had two.
They were delicious.

Recently, I rediscovered Tab. Y’all remember Tab?
It is made with saccharine, just like diet Faygo usta be.
My body can handle saccharine. No headaches. The other fake sweeteners give me migraines. I’m on a sincere Tab kick. It tastes like the 80s.

I’m waiting for them to bring back New York Seltzer. Black Cherry. Mmm. You can’t get it here, you can only order it online. When we get some New York Seltzer, Imma wear my Converse and put my hair in a side ponytail. Too bad I got rid of my plastic charm necklace, huh?

Nice article! This reminds me of me and my dad puting peanuts in a tall Pepsi bottle and drinking it down. I also grew up on RC Cola. 🙂

Nice job on the SoCS prompt. I was a serious soda (but we said pop) junkie. I gave it up. It is sad because I think I’d still like it. I will have a fountain soda sometimes, and I know that if I had some in the fridge, I’d drink them all. But cold. My wife will do soda warm. Not me. Seltzer, but not soda.

I am addicted to Mountain Dew. First it was MD, then it was diet Coke, and now I’m back on Mountain Dew. I have to have one to start the day. Or at least 1/2. I only like them cold and super fizzie. Once a can has been open, even covered, for an hour or more, it loses too much fizz for me. When I was 29 I had about ten fillings put in b/c of the Mountain Dew . . . . I am trying to really really limit myself. I understand the Peach Faygo thing b/c for me it is the old-fashioned orange sodas like Crush–grape, too. Yum. They taste like popsicles with fizz.

Oh man, you know what I love to order when they have them? Stewart’s orange cream soda. Mmm.
I don’t drink Mountain Dew, but when I carried Sassy, that summer, I liked the frozen ones. Had several of those then, and not touched it since!

I rarely drink soda anymore, but when I do grab a can at work, it’s room temperature. Same way I like my water. I will have it cold, with ice on a hot summer day, but most of the time it’s room temp.

I have a bottle of diet Faygo 60/40 sitting in the pantry…waiting for an opportunity to make myself a brandy old fashioned. Yum.

I pretty much only drink soda at room temperature, too. Not warm, not cold, no ice puhlease! Hub thinks I’m nuts as his drinks are 75% ice and 25% drink (which is ridonkulous). No point in ordering soda at a restaurant as they won’t understand room temperature soda. Also, I really don’t drink soda anymore. Mostly it’s the caffeine and those without caffeine aren’t really worth the trouble. I can’t do any of the fake sugars, either, so I just skip it altogether. On occasion if I can find a caff-free cream soda or REALLY good root beer made with real sugar then I’m a happy camper.
And like Luanne, I LOVED orange crush and grape crush sodas…OHEMGEE. Yum.

I used to be addicted to diet coke – it was really hard to kick the stuff. Peach Faygo, hey?

My friend Carole keeps a six pack of Coke In her bottom desk drawer at work to enjoy through out the day. That is her choice of morning beverage as well. I think you two would get along well! As for me, lately I’ve been drinking cranberry ginger ale but it has to be ice cold…can’t do that room temp stuff! 😊

Ahhh Tab! Love the stuff! You can get a serious addiction to it…I sure did. Then I had to stop, because the stores stopped selling it for awhile. I’d call, and go to all the stores in town, looking for my Tab fix. hahaha… I finally got over it. Oh, we have Faygo here, but I’ve never had any!

I caught site of the Tab on Amazon’s Prime Pantry, and I ordered it, but they have it at most of the shops here. Just one lil row, though, so I could see how dangerous a Tab addiction could be!

I had a serious addiction to Diet Ginger Ale. It had to be diet … and it had to be icy cold even in the dead of winter … but I’ve slowly managed to wean myself off it.

I still keep cold GA in the fridge, but only occasionally indulge in it and rarely more than half the can. If only I could manage the same with sweets!!!

We buy Canada Dry ginger ale pretty often. Warm ginger ale is nice when you’re sick, I say. I’m glad you have your addiction under control now. 🙂

Oh – that’s curious you can get Canada Dry. It’s the only kind I’ll drink.

It is a bit curious, I suppose. It’s owned by the same people that own Dr Pepper and Snapple in Texas.
Now, here in the Midwest, somewhere, maybe Michigan, there’s Vernor’s ginger ale, which people do love, but I’ve always been a Canada Dry person.

As a child I liked orange Faygo. Call me a traditionalist. Never could get behind grape, but liked peach sometimes. However, as an adult I’ve lost my desire for soda, preferring iced tea and other adult beverages, I guess. Funny, hadn’t really thought about this until now.

That’s why these prompts are so good, hm? Never know what you’ll get 🙂
Thanks for sharing. I envy you, I think. I would be a much healthier person if I lost my desire for soda. 😛

Plastic charm necklace huh? Yep that is a lost. Of course you still have your friendship bracelet don’t you? My first wife was totally addicted to Tab. I miss New York Seltzer too. I don’t drink too much soda. I like an occasional Jarritos or Mexican Coke, with real sugar but that is about it. I can believe your addiction. After seeing you with the Faygo. I remember a Nehi brown cream soda from the 50’s. I have been searching for an equivalent for years.

I don’t have any of my friendship bracelets anymore. Terrible.
I hope one day you find a dreamy brown cream soda.
Perhaps one day we will enjoy a New York Seltzer — those were the BEST seltzer! 🙂

  12. When I use to drink pop (I loved Dr. Pepper and Coca-Cola) – pretty much quit cold turkey one day. Your post reminded me of a day at work when I put a can of warm Cola in the fridge, and wrote my name on a file label and put that label on my can – all so I could have it later in the day when it was cold. Some idgit at work had the balls to peel off my name-label and put it on his WARM can of Coke then took my COLD can of Coke for himself. (I had my suspicions of who did that, but I never confronted him with it.) Bummer of an afternoon for me – no cold can of Coke!

  13. The only soda I ever liked was a fountain coke, especially with flavor…cherry or chocolate were the best for me. Never a fan of carbonation. It’s why I pass on champagne. ☺ Bubble-free ???

I don’t very often drink fizzy drinks, except when I get a real raging thirst. Then it has to be ice cold with ice cubes, or even better ice cream! Ahh, those were the days when I could enjoy a coke float! 🙂

  15. Ohhh you’d be in trouble if you visit the SF Bay Area; they are trying to tax soda drinks to reduce sugar consumption in people’s diet. If you visit, BYO.

I can’t stand any canned soft drinks, especially anything with artificial sweeteners or saccharine, they all taste horrible. Rhonda, however, is a serious Coke fiend.
I have recently got into fruity, natural sparkling spring water drinks, heavily laced with Pimms; excellent for hot days in the garden.

I’ve never ever been a soda/cola person. It burnt my throat. UNLESS you’re talking about Jolt Cola, which was used to wash down loads of “mini-thins” and No-doz pills. Ah, I miss the 80’s/early 90’s.

As someone that keeps an IV drip attached to my arm of Diet Dr. Pepper I can fully appreciate the SOOOOOODA addiction (bear with me I’ve been in Wisconsin for a week learning how “others” talk), Tab though ugh! My mom used to drink that stuff when I was little, I’m stilled scarred by the taste of it! Tab’s got sass, ooh your gonna love it, or something like that was their catch phrase I believe.

I honestly don’t remember the Tab commercials, but I do remember it being in everyone’s hand.
I luuuurrrrve Dr Pepper, and I love the Diet too, but they both give me the heartburn, so I don’t often choose them.

  19. This should be ‘throwback Thursday’ if you are going to talk about Tab. 🙂 But, you really need to grab a full bodied Coca Cola, take a seat, and look up what the artificial sweeteners are made from. Maybe add a little something to that Coke before you read too far. 🙂

Tab tastes like the 1970s to me. And also like kickass bravery and espionage. (We kids weren’t allowed to drink soda of any kind. The Tab kept in stock at our house was strictly a dad-only beverage. Sneaking any in a way that meant we wouldn’t get caught required some serious Mission Impossible-level spycraft.)
