Here’s an apartment building that was not only for sale, but also had units for rent. Sassy thought it was adorable, so she called, and they were asking $750 for a one bedroom, which happens to be about a dollar per square foot. She asked if that was a good price, and I laughed, because I don’t even know how people make rent these days.
Here are two other apartment buildings — specs unknown. I think these two are all about building materials.
Kind of a lot goin on here, but the lamps are fantastic and I like that funky sorta pointy, sorta zig-zag brick there at the top.

I love the wooden door at the top. That seems steep for rent, but it’s a great door to come home to. I also really like the reflections in the bottom photo. The lamps are wonderful, too!

If you think $750 for a one bedroom apartment is expensive, you’d be appalled at Toronto. Three years ago, my son rented out his one bedroom condo downtown for more than double that.
The wooden door at the top is charming, but the last one has a lot going on that’s really interesting – the columns, the lamps, and yes … that funky brickwork!

Yeah, I’ve never taken to ‘cost of living’ differences. It’s very strange to me, to watch the home shows in Canada. I think my house would be over half a mil in Toronto. Maybe more, cause land. No one seems to have land in the city there. Madness! I never can relate!

The average price of a house in Canada is $500,000 with huge regional differences. Toronto is an extremely hot market and in April, the average home price in the city topped $1 million. It’s craziness.

That first one is my favourite, Joey, it’s really different. The rental seems very high for a one bedroom apartment, 😮 I would be expecting a three/four bed house where I live for the same price.

In a rural area here, you might could get 3 bedrooms for $750.

To rent anything in my hood, your monthly income must be double the amount of the rent or your not going to be approved. A credit check is $30 a person, that is anyone living there 18 yrs. or older. Some places have waiting list. Most places have an animal deposit of $500 per pet. If the schools are in the high score level, then rent is even more. Better schools, higher rent.

As far as rent goes the farther into town you go the higher it gets. For newer apartments $750 is about the going rate for a one bedroom. Some of the newest joints charge twice that much for a one bedroom. Ridiculous. Now about those doors. The wooden one is nice but you are right about the last two and the material For some reason the Windsor reminds me of a fortress. How would you like to be the one to shape those huge hunks of limestone? I think it’s cool how the old timesy apartment buildings always had names.

These are all downtown, all different neighborhoods though, if I remember right. My last rent was $774 for 1300 sq ft, and those rent for over $1200 now, so I can’t even. Wages haven’t gone up enough to match living costs.

Isn’t the Windsor on Delaware? I recognize the sculpted stone facade I just can’t place it. Don’t recognize the wood door. In 1973 I rented a 3 bedroom 2 bath flat with garage and washer and dryer hook up for $299. That was a long time ago.

Ha. You’re right. Even No tell Motels rent for $125 /week. When I first hit Vegas I lived in a third rate joint on the far end of the Strip for $95 a week. Of course it did have a balcony.

I love that first one – lotsa nice stuff going on there with the patterns in the brickwork above the door too.
It’s fascinating to compare rents in different areas. I know a few people who live in small one-bedroom places for around that much here. Newer and/or bigger and you’re pushing $1000 or more a month though, which is still waaay more affordable for a major city than say Toronto or Vancouver.
I remember when I got my 1st apartment in the mid-80’s, the rule of thumb then was about $75 a month per room. When it got up over $200 a month per room was all the incentive we needed to start house shopping. You’re right though, I don’t know how people manage to pay these rents.

Yes! I have friends in Vancouver, and I can’t fathom their costs! When we were house shopping and I shared links with one of them, she kept telling me those were million dollar homes there. I told her, for a million dollars here, you can live in a mansion on tons of acreage! 🙂

I was going to say the rent for the one-bedroom is high, but then I read Joanne’s comments. Wow, glad I’m not living in Toronto. I do like the door to the first apartment building and it looks like it would be a nice place…maybe.

I like these! I am always saying I don’t know how other people LIVE today. Do you know how much a roast chicken was at Whole Foods the other day? Without tax (and it was taxed for some reason) it was $14!!!!!!!!!! Apparently they have non-organic that is cheaper but they were out of it . . . .

Lawd. I buy two organic, vegetarian fed chickens for about $10. I am so sorry about the cost of your roasted bird. Of course, I seldom shop at Whole Foods because I feed four or five on the regular and I am not the sultan’s wife! lol 😉

Joey, I made it here!! Desperately trying to get to most of the entries before leaving tomorrow. I love that first door and I agree that rents are often outrageous these days. Our younger daughter lives in Philadelphia and the rents are steep there, but our older is in Pasadena, so as you may imagine, much worse there!

$750 isn’t bad. Rent here in Silicon Valley for a 1 bedroom is more than double that! It’s not easy at all for the kids wanting to move out. I was able to move out on my own to a 1 bdrm apartment when I was 18. Rent then ate up most my paycheck, and I lived on eggs, tuna, rice, and beans, but it was doable. Not so much today.

and maybe I am seeing way too much here – ha!
but the first one is my fav – the wood – the shape – and those two flower pots lining the stairs….

I love the lamps on the last two doors, kind of old school but then the doors itself are so modern. The rent sounds like it is in the Helsinki area in Finland, quite astounding really…

Oh, man, yeah, I am ALL ABOUT that brickwork! The Stone Portals on the second and third look kind of Monumental Architecture; it would make me kinda nervous to walk through them, like I was entering the government building in the movie Brazil. That rounded wooden door in the first building and all the brickwork details are definitely worth a dollar a square foot! Tell Sassy the price is right!
