SoCS — But is it Long Enough?

This is a long weekend for many of us. Really, it’s a long weekend for people who work in places that aren’t open on Fourth of July, notably businesses that depend significantly on mail and/or banks.

I hadn’t thought about the long weekend properly.

First came the realization that because I was unable to get ahold of anyone at the water company Friday, I’d need to call back on Monday. When I text this to The Mister, he corrected me, “Tuesday.”
Oh yeah.

I knew it was coming, but when I went to the market yesterday, I bought food for the weekend.
Then I told The Mister I bought the stuff, and he said, “That’s great, Baby, but what will we eat on Monday? On the big day?”

oooohhhh fuuuuuuck. “I dunno.”

I also had it in my head that since we’re going to visit friends Sunday, then today I could really be lazy, wear my sweats, or not, as I sit here in my nightshirt, but I’d thought today would definitely be a day that didn’t involve a bra or make up or shoes.
I really just wanna lie on my husband and finish the last two parts of Roots, maybe crack my Jeeves book.

Uh, no.

Yes, we will see The Girls on Sunday. We call them The Girls, Dee and Vee, just as we call Mr Hill et al The Boys. It’s funny we do that. Anyway, I’m bringing dessert. Specifically, I am taking a cherry pie. You know what we don’t have? Enough cherries to bake pies.

SO I’ve got to put on a bra and pants and shoes and go get s’more frickin cherries. Some people might would get up early Sunday and do it all then. I am not those people. And before I go, I should decide what we’re gonna eat on the big day. Typically we have grilled things, first barbecued chicken and then late at night hot dogs, which is sorta funny, because it’s always hot on Fourth of July. I don’t really care, because I don’t often eat meat and I just had an honest-to-goodness steak on Thursday, after frying chicken on Wednesday. I’m all meated-up. We’d been talking about Brats, and then The Girls invited us over for Brats, which was serendipitous.

Then The Mister said stuff about rain, so I guess I should check the weather, because don’t nobody wanna tend the grill in the rain. Benson posted a picture of some gumbo yesterday, and I think gumbo sounds wonderful, if atypical for Fourth of July. I could technically start it Sunday, and it’s not weather-contingent.

Speaking of weather, it’s cool here. For July. We anticipate keeping the windows open for several days. Isn’t that nice?

IF the Fourth of July parade and subsequent fireworks are both rained out, I could sit my happy ass on the sofa with a bowl of gumbo and a book and say, “Aw, that’s too bad.” But I’d be sad. Fourth of July is my favorite. Y’all know I love me some drum lines and fireworks.

Maybe next Saturday… Nope, that’s the day to drive out to the farm for five pounds of blueberries. Maybe next Sunday. Maybe.

One day, the weekend will be long enough.

My weekend did not start great.
Hopefully yours is long, more restful than you think, and enjoyable.

Sorry, I hope yours gets better. :/
I went to two more places, got all the stuffs now, and had lunch at the panda place. What is that place? I call it the panda place. Panda Express. Baking this evening 🙂

I don’t think they’ll ever be long enough. Our office closed at noon on Friday (which is sweet) but I think we need to get out of this 5 days on 2 off thing. If we had a 4/3 setup, then a long weekend would switch it to 3/4 which would be long.

I think I have find hot sausage to grill. That will be nice.

    Have a great weekend !

  5. I get it. I’m going to a family reunion/picnic tomorrow. And I’m sitting here reading blogs, instead of doing the baking that I promised. (I’m the family member that bakes.☺) It will be 90 degrees here, and we’ll be outside, so I’m stalling, figuring out what won’t melt ! Happy 4th…whatever you do/eat, it will be okay. 🎊 🎉🌠 🎇 🎆

Ugh on the 90. It does eliminate some good ones :/ I’m sure whatever you decide to make, I’m sure they will be delicious 🙂
Happy Fourth to you and yours!

I think a big pot of Gumbo sounds wonderful and you should definitely make it on Sunday. Lee has been known to use Kitchen Bouquet on occasion. I refuse to. Do you add okra to your Gumbo? I have my menu planned for the next 3 meals so Gumbo isn’t in my near future. Maybe after the ribs and stuff on the Fourth. I hope you have a wonderful July 4.

I DO put okra in my gumbo, but there’s some sorta madness here and now, because I had to go to two stores and settle for frozen okra. :/ It’s the middle of summer, shouldn’t there be okra? Pity’s sake. Anyway, Imma saute the okra with the onions and garlic, hopefully keep them from getting slimy. (Unless you know a better way.)
Ribs are one of the things I suggested before your gumbo pic.
Enjoy your Fourth, too! Do you go downtown for the fireworks?

      • Benson says:

No I haven’t been downtown in a while. We can see some of the fireworks from home. Cooking the okra is as good a way as any to avoid the dreaded and disgusting okra slime. After I get my roux the color I want I toss in the Trinity and okra;if I am using it and let it cook for just a bit.then I add the stock. The okra historically has been used to tighten up the soup. I rely on the roux. Besides a really dark roux just tastes so damn good. Now I am gettin’ hungry for some Gumbo.

Haha, I am too 🙂 Since your photo yesterday. I am good with roux. It will be delicious. I will eat it up. But it ain’t gumbo without okra, in my book anyway.

I can dig it. I feel the same way about green peppers and celery. I don’t use okra that often because fresh can be hard to find and frozen is just silly. On a side note the now defunct Double Eight Grocery was a good source for hard to find vittles;like okra.

I do celery and peppers, too — more green, less red. Ah, remember Atlas? They had the rare stuffs, too.

Oh yeah Atlas. I used to buy veggie base there when I was working at a hotel downtown,it was the only place in town that carried it. That has been a while. I have never tried red I just use green. I bet that is a sight. Pops of red in a sea of mahogany brown. Is it a Fresh Market that moved in where Atlas was? I went there once. They have an olive bar. That’s all I got.

It’s never long enough because every day leads to another day of work, which you clearly pointed out here! But it sounds like you’re going to have fun anyway! I can’t think of anything more 4th of July weekend than cherry pie! I am too hot to think about food though, although I did thaw some lamb chops for the grill for hubby (I don’t eat stuff that is as cute as sheep). I forgot to think of something for me to eat so I might end up with chips and cheese and grilled broc. Because I am not putting on my bra and going up to the grocery store.

Some might say apple is more American, but it’s the cherries that are in season now 🙂
I don’t eat lamb, either. Sheep are too cute. Rarely, as a guest, lamb is offered in such a way it would be rude to decline, but it’s rare, so I haven’t had to eat any in …oh, 17-18 years maybe 🙂
That’s how I do, Luanne, I just eat the sides 🙂
I don’t blame you for not going out. It wasn’t too busy, or too hot, but I just didn’t wanna get dressed for public. Poor me! 😛
I hope you enjoy your weekend and the holiday! 😀

I started working what’s called a “compressed work week” which means in a 2 week period I work 9 little bit longer days and then get every 2nd Friday off. That’s a favular weekend! And, I worked enough overtime this spring to take EVERY FRIDAY IN JULY AND AUGUST OFF! Yes. I shouted because that’s exciting.

I have a sour cherry tree in my backyard that is busting at the seams. Having a battle royale with the birds and squirrels to see who gets the most. You could have some if you like.

Happy 4th to you, Joey. Enjoy your posts and your honesty. Keep on.

  10. The weekends are never long enough. I may be alone most of the weekend, but there are a few chorizos in the fridge. Lot’s of Basque folks out here and Basque chorizo is a staple.

    • joey says:

Nice! I didn’t know that you had a lot of Basque peoples out that way! I am glad to live here now instead of Georgia, because lemme tell you, out in the sticks of Georgia, not only do they not have chorizo, but they’ve never even heard of it! So much stuff I couldn’t get there.
      Anyway, enjoy your sausage! 😀

  12. We have thousands of tourists visit our small town. I like to hide at home most of the weekend, but I usually go out anyway. The people watching is too hard to resist, even though I don’t like crowds.
Tonight, at 10:30 pm, I remembered we didn’t have food after spending the day driving through the mountains and hiking with the boys.

I bought all the ingredients for homemade Bbq sauce. When I got to van, I realized I didn’t get the ribs to slather it on. Waited in line again. Two good things came of it. 1.It is highly entertaining watching intoxicated tourists. I saw a guy drop a whole case of beer with glass bottles as he tried to put it on the conveyor belt. Totally didn’t stop him from getting more even though he clearly couldn’t handle his liquor. 🙂 2. I bought the Magnum ice cream bars that were on sale I avoided the first trip into the store, because a girl only has so much will power when it comes to salted caramel and ice cream.

For 4th food, I’ve made Nana’s Ceasar salad a few years to bring to potlucks. I appreciate some green salad to balance the potato salad.

We usually start the morning with the free pancake breakfast at church and I end up grazing all day.
Eat what you want to, and have fun. Gumbo, Chinese food, or watermelon, as long as you overindulge, you’ll celebrate ‘Merica because that’s what we do.
PS A homemade cherry pie is truly a labor of love. If you make one, I hope you get mad props from the party goers. You definitely have them from me.

Well I relate to that ‘bought all the ingredients for bbq sauce and forgot to buy the ribs bit’ — that is so me.
I finished the pies last night. One’s wrapped-up to take to The Girls tonight, and the other’s wrapped-up for us to eat later. I make good pies, but I still think my mother’s are better 🙂
I’m soon to start my roux for gumbo. We shall eat gumbo for the holiday 🙂 Enjoy your ribs and your Caesar and your Magnums!

I would like to invite you to my blog party that’s taking place as we speak. It’s rocking and a lovely way to connect with other bloggers. Hope you can make it 🙂

    Happy 4th of July!!

This is our long weekend too – although the holiday was July 1st Canada Day. This weekend is always extra special for us because it coincides with Husband’s birthday week, making the Canada Day weekend one of our family celebrations with happy mayhem 🙂
    That was yesterday.

This morning I am slightly hungover and I have to drag my sorry butt to a local ski hill to watch son #2 compete in a Spartan Race. It was a commitment made before all the Tequila Fizzes I drank. Yes – it was good mayhem, but the price will be paid 😉

My weekends are never long enough! Joey, first thing I do, alone at home, is take off shoes, bra and jeans. I understand wanting to just hang out and relax. Often, have to get back around to go to ball game (grandson’s) or to meet DIL at park to keep eyes on grandies. 🙂
When I was the hostess of my family for 27 years, there were a lot of circles driven, things forgotten and more driving. My brother and his wife made grilled BBQ ribs, corn on cob, and mashed garlic red-skinned potatoes! My other brother brought veggies and garlic hummus. Mom and I brought (both chocolate p.b. and caramel Heath bar kinds) ice cream and store bought frosted cookies.
When my grandkids and kids were up here over the weekend, Rich made hamburgers and fresh green beans, while his wife baked up French fries and cookies. We all had watermelon for dessert. 🙂 Makes me hungry all over again! Hope you had a relaxing day sometime over the weekend, Joey!
