#ThursdayDoors — It’s Not a Church and You’re Not a Downtown Driver

Every time I drive downtown, I see these twin domed steeples. The last few times, I thought ooh i bet that church has great doors! Of course, I had no idea where it was, street-wise.

An adventure! I had eager companions in Bubba, Sassy, and Moo, because they were all twitterpated about Pokemon Go. Sadie went because “Bye-Byes!?!”

I took the exit past the church and made my way toward it. At some point, I caught sight of familiar railroad tracks and after a brief brain index search, I asked, “Are we in Brightwood?” No one had any idea what I was asking, so they shrugged out “I dunno.” Well, we were. I had to turn several times, because the street didn’t go through, and then there was the awkward BUMP over the tracks, more turning, a three-point turn, and finally, the church!

Oh.
Not great doors.
Former church is now a performing arts center.

Gorgeous building though, hm?

I decided we’d go downtown. I could have taken these people to Timbuktu, they wouldn’t have cared.
Pokemon! Pokemon everywhere!
“More walking? Awesome! My eggs will hatch!”
I can’t make this stuff up.

I was headed west on Michigan Street when I spotted this gorgeous set of doors, but one-way street, so I had to go around and come back, how you do when things are one-way.
I have no idea what this is now. It’s not a church anymore. But aren’t those doors spectacular?
And check out the walkway.
Niiice.

By then, Bubba was sick as a dog from all the turning and obsessing over the Pokemon in his phone.
He asked if he could drive.
drive me? downtown? psh, no. i don’t even like your father to drive me downtown! I didn’t say that. I said something that sounded like, “Uh, Nowa.”

We had a great doorcursion, my door arsenal is stocked.
I guess the people got a bunch of Pokemon and balls and eggs, I don’t know. I know we all had a good time and we walked about 4 miles.
“Walkies!?!”

We went home in time for me to make dinner. The boy complained of his carsickness, told his father he’d wanted to drive. The Mister laughed.
“Dude, she doesn’t even like it when I drive her downtown.”

Martin University Performing Arts Center needs to up their front door game. Such a beautiful bldg deserves a snazzy front door. Goodness, such a missed opportunity!

  4. Yeah, walkies! 🙂 I’d be carsick too, though… Still, I love the rosetta (word?) of the first building and the lovely round windows of the second, beside the doors. And now that you know where it is, you can visit the Performing Arts Center.

Love the red door and the brick building that used to be a church. I wonder what it is now since there’s still a big cross on the front. Maybe it’s a pastor’s residence???

I don’t get the whole Pokemon Go craze, but I’m glad the children got their eggs and balls and whatever else they needed. It was a “win” day for everyone except Bubba, who may not go on another excursion with you unless you let him drive.

There were signs that said if the door is locked, a party’s in session, ring the bell, somethin somethin, so I wondered if it might be a club?
I know, right? On the way home, I said, “Maybe you shouldn’t look at your phone while you ride in the car?” I thought we covered this when he was 6 and we were dealing with books 😉
The Pokemon is beyond my understanding, but I’m happy for them. They want me to take them to every landmark in the city now. lol

That red door is the reason the hashtag exists; in my opinion. The whole darn thing is beautiful. Every time I see it it is from a bus and I never think to go back and get a picture. Pokemon Go;is that Japanese for Stalker app?

  9. That’s funny that they liked walking. I have one who has explored the entire nearby quaint town in an effort to catch Pokemon. When said child mentioned walking to the middle of the 4 lane, 55 mph hwy in order to get a rare one we had a serious talk! I love the repurposed church.

Yes, there’s definitely danger involved. People have the same experiences geocaching as well. Frightening stuff!

      I’m glad you liked today’s doors 🙂

Great doors, especially the one with all the criss-cross molding! I also like the stone building. I love the kind of driving a doorscursion inspires. It’s good that your family understands an supports your habit 🙂

I remember that feeling of disappointment walking up to the main entrance of the parliament buildings in Ottawa last summer. But you did find some other awesome doors, including that red beauty, so all’s well that ends well.
Do you think we could say that searching for doors is kinda like our version of Pokemon hunting? Maybe I should get to work on that app!

I loved that first church building Joey. The flower-shaped stained glass window, the welcoming statue with the open arms, and the beautiful colour and shape of the building. What a shame about the doors!
The second ex church doors though were very impressive, A good strong colour and very churchy shaped!

  14. That first building was amazing! Too bad about the doors. Even some color would help them out. The other doors and entry are great too! I need to convince some people to go door hunting with me….Pokeman Go…I should have thought of that!

Those buildings are beautiful. Why can’t they have Famous Literary Characters Go? I’d walk my ass off to catch those.

Great shots. So vivid. I love old churches and I don’t mind business’ going in as long as they maintain the exterior quality.

WOW!! You found 2 spectacular buildings! Don’t care if the first one had a dud for a door, the building is beautiful.
… then you hit us with the 2nd one. Wowzer. Love the fat archway. and the faux grill work on the door, and the wonderful windows that look like eyes!

  19. ROFL!! I’m laughing out loud! Nearly in tears! OMG! Your narrative on about the new Pokemon GO craze in your house is priceless! We haven’t caught it at my house…yet.

The domes and the building of the first “it isn’t a church anymore” are beautiful, and the red doors of the second “it’s not a church anymore”, are gorgeous! It looks like it’s a polling place if not a church anymore.

Looking forward to seeing all the other doors you photographed while on the doorscursion/pokemon Go adventure. 🙂

Oh, Joey! I still admire the first performing arts building with the twin green capped domes! The metal doors could be painted a better color to catch one’s eyes. They have a utilitarian purpose. I liked the stained glass windows, wuth large flower circular shape. I noted you call it a rosette.
The red Doors are cool and I assume this maybe a house now. I really like the design of wooden interesting puzzle like double doors. Nice trip and everyone is crazy about this new Pokemon app! Eggs and balls, you say. 🙂 My coworker showed me a wild bunny kind of like “Bunnicula” from the book. Fun times!
I like your Sadie, Joey. ❤

That second door is what the hippies would say “neato mosquito!”, I’m starting a bloggy office pool on which state will have the first Pokemon Go related lawsuit for when some dumbass walks in front of a loaded dumptruck on the interstate. Florida is the odds on favorite!

Such GORGEOUS buildings! And the second one’s doors and stone/brickwork totally makes up for the industrial doors on the first one! I never thought about Pokemon Go encouraging kids to walk more, but that’s a Good Thing, isn’t it?
