When I lived in Georgia, I went to the commissary lookin for Milnot so I could make one of my gramma’s recipes. I couldn’t find it. Like any wise woman would do, I approached a gray-haired woman to steal her greater wisdom.
She said, “Y’ain’t gonna find no Milnot in Georgia or Alabama cause this region here don’t take Milnot and where your people from?”
If you live in a region that takes Milnot, or one where you can order some from Amazon, then here’s Milnot’s recipe. It’s not my gramma’s, but it’s close. If you thought I was gonna give you my gramma’s recipe, well, I’d have to ask you where your people from.

“Where your people from?” … I imagined that said with a tone of disdain 😉
I’m curious about Milnot though. It is just evaporated milk? … Because I’ve never heard of “filled” milk.

There was definitely a tone of disdain.

Oh, ghod, yes, the outing yourself as a ferriner by what you ask for at the store. The classic, “Y’all not from around here, are yuh?” Could be Soviet Russia, could be the next county over, it’s all the same. lol!

From what it says on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filled_milk, where it took me when I put in Milnot), It’s evaporated milk with vegetable fats added. So I would think any brand of canned milk would have sufficed. Now, of course, you live in Indy, and I’m sure you can get Milnot there, so the question is moot.

Thank you for doing this, John. I was just on my way to wikipedia to look this up!

When I was in Georgia and people first became aware that you weren’t from around there, or, God forbid, weren’t even from the south, you slipped more than a few notches. Not gonna share gramma’s secrets are ya… Well, OK. I hope you pass them onto some one 🙂

You’re right, they do not care for Yankees. I always tried to emphasize my mother’s family was from Virginia. lol

So much said in one little line. Milnot, or any evaporated milk, is good for making sausage gravy. On a side note have you ever cooked condensed sweet milk to make caramel? If you put the can on the top shelf of a kitchen cabinet and forget about it in time it becomes caramel. I label that as a happy accident.

I have not, but I have heard about it.
For my sausage gravy, hm? I may try it. Thanks!

Ha! Gotta love grandma’s recipes. My grandma was usually all about that Eagle Brand milk. One of my grandmother’s recipes calls for a cup of sweet milk, so I went to the store looking the first time I made it and couldn’t find anything labeled that, only for my husband to tell me it was regular old milk.

The only thing I ever had with evaporated milk as a kid was canned peaches. It’s been a looooong time.

I’ve never heard of Milnot. Learn something new everyday. I remember my first trip to Virginia where I had never heard of scrapple. I’ll take bacon or sausage, thank you very much! 🙂

Haha! I don’t mind scrapple, on good bread, with lots of mustard and pickle. 🙂

This was one of my favorite one-liners ever. Just the best! 🙂 I can hear the twang and I like the recipe, but don’t cook very often! Thanks, Joey. . . Heading back to the recipe!

Sounds so delicious like a lemon cream cheese cake. I am happy to see both real butter and vanilla in this, Joey. Lately my grown kids are trying to “play” with recipes and adding almond or other flavorings when I just love vanilla! (Or vanilla bean. . .)
