#ThursdayDoors — Spencer

When The Mister and I travel to southern Indiana, we always seem to go through Spencer. I’ve been through there many, many times. Like a child I always say the same thing, “This is familiar. Is there a McDonald’s at the end of this street?” Y’all know I like my fountain Cokes.

I could probably make it to Spencer on my own, but after that McDonald’s, I wouldn’t know where to go. I don’t care how many times I’ve been down there in the last 30 years, I still do not know the way to The Mister’s grandmother’s house, let alone the more obscure places.

I more often drive home, because while there are no signs that read “Grandma’s House” with arrows and mileage on the way down, on the way up there are plenty  with “Indianapolis” to help a city girl get home.
Besides, then I can stop at that McDonald’s, “Two swate tays and two Cokes, please.” Everyone likes a cold drink on a lil doorscursion detour.

That is a sneaky guard dog. The door with the louvered glass is a classic.

When I was a kid I use to see a few of these doors and for some reason I always thought rich folks lived there.

Interesting. Were they the sorta new thing then? Was it home improvement into modern times?
When I was a kid, I thought split-levels were fancy 🙂 SO many of them had porch rails inside and I just thought those were nifty!

Yeah I guess they were “modern living” at the time. Every house had a porch, very few were screened in so an enclosed porch with a bunch of windows was fancy. When my folks moved to the Southside they bought a house that had a white iron railing separating the front hall from the living room. I thought that was odd, but it was like houses on TV so I thought it was fancy too.

ha! I love the dog hiding in the shrubbery 😀

It always makes me happy when communities restore their heritage buildings rather than let them deteriorate to the point where they must be torn down and replaced. Bravo Spencer!

I had to smile at the Library though. I find it interesting that there was a tendency in architectural design in our countries’ early days to incorporate the name /purpose of the building into the structure. I see it with some frequency and I find it amusing – especially when the building is no longer used for that purpose 🙂

I loved the dog, too 🙂 I thought he was worth a snap!

I think the restoration is magnificent, so I Bravo Spencer with you! 😀

I know what you mean, but then, I kinda like it. So many buildings, you know it used to be something, at least when it says that on it, you know what that something was 🙂 Look at all the non-church churches I’ve posted this summer! Lots!

How come I never see a sign that says, “Fake Mexican Food?”

Thanks for the tour Joey. The Town Hall/Firehouse building is simply gorgeous – I’d say the restoration was a success 🙂

  6. Looks like a pretty place. That library door is kind of an abomination. Something modern and cold shoved inside a classic looking building.

  7. Love the firehouse and its fab doors, Joey. I also love Mexican food and that’s why your last image is my favourite 🙂

  8. Very nice photos of your door selections! Maybe youcan convince The Mister to purchase a McDonald’s Golden Arches sign and install it on his grandma’s roof so you can hone in on that gps site when you’re in town. ;-D

Oh, yes to the jalousie door. We had one at my childhood home in NJ. Washing those window panes was a royal pain… Ha! Directions…yeah, I have graduated (but only a little bit) from ‘right’ and ‘left’ to ‘east’ and ‘west.’ Whoa! Yes. Major.

I’m not directionally challenged, but out there….uh…it’s like … all the same-ish?

Jalousie, hm? Thanks for the name! I used to see them much more often when I was a kid, hardly ever see them anymore!
I had French doors with panes for seven years. When we moved in, I thought they were so pretty. After seven years of cleaning them, I hated them. I’ll never have them again! I can only imagine how much time and vinegar you’d need to clean an entire porch made up in those jalousie things.

I love the door with all the windows you crank open. (I can’t remember what they’re called. You rarely see them anymore. Just a blast from the past.

I was all set to start saying how much I like the interesting mix of panels in that first door. Set into a stone building, I didn’t see how it could get any better. Then – I – saw – the – firehouse! Oh my, those are some fabulous doors. I love the pattern and the color. I think I like Spencer 🙂

  17. Some of the older homes in Florida still have jalousie windows. I know they used them to allow the breeze to enter the home and still be able to keep the rain out. I think a/c led to their demise since they don’t seal tightly.
    Great doors this week! 🙂
