Sometimes when you’re trying to get the entire facade of a building, it’s difficult. The advice has been to stand on the other side of the street.
I stood on the other side of the street.
But still, no.
I walked to the corner opposing the Cathedral.
I was committed to getting it all, but um, no.
Maybe it’s better in the daylight? From the other corner?
Maybe a little better, but still no.
It’s a gigantic church, okay?
The Scottish Rite Cathedral was built between 1927 and 1929 for 2.5 million dollars. It is a Freemasonry building and each section can be divided precisely by measures of three, many by thirty-three.
It seats 1200, has a pipe organ, a carillon, its own orchestra, and it’s said to be one of the best examples of Neo-Gothic architecture in the United States, receiving more than 10,000 visitors a year.
All that, and I’ve never even been inside it!
They do events on a level of floating ballroom anyone? And also, OMAWORDSOMUCHSHINYPRETTYWHOATHECHANDELIERSYALL!
There’s a link to take a virtual tour. I won’t lie, it’s a stunning peek, but all that spinning played hell with my vertigo.
For $3 one can tour it in person. I think I should go. Perhaps Benson would like to accompany me?
It has beautiful doors. Oh the stained glass!
#ThursdayDoors is part of an inspired post series run by Norm Frampton. To see other doors of interest, or to share your own, click the link.
Well, that was surely worth crossing the street. ☺ Beautiful.

What a beautiful building. I’d take a tour. There are probably a gazzion doors inside. I know the struggle with fitting these places into the camera. You did a good job of capturing really interesting bits. I love the photos. The close up of the door is magnificent.

Oh good! Thank you! I only can whistle on accident, but I know how to use email 🙂

That’s awesome, and I think you should go. Maybe it’s time to invest in a drone too for those photos you can ‘t get any other way.

Hahaha! A drone! While that is the most clever suggestion, it isn’t when applied to me. lol Imagine klutz, plus vertigo, plus techy challenged! Woot! I will smile every time drones are mentioned now, thank you 🙂

I figured you’d have a reaction about like that. You could be a news blurb about the lady who flew her drone into X.

Arguably the BEST part of sitting in a church pew is the glorious glow of sunlight filtering through mosaic glass…ahhh, makes me wanna go to church…kinda. I’m such a terrible Catholic!
Beautiful pics! I certainly appreciate your effort xx

Pagan girl still loves the beauty of a gorgeous Midnight Mass. For years we’d all go to this one really old church, with the magnificent stone and stained glass and the poinsettias lining the altar and the smell of incense, and well, it was always beautiful, so Christmas, so wintery. Maybe that tradition will come back. Or not. Hard to say.

Yass! I always loved Midnight Mass until I had kids and then I could never stay awake or I was just worried about the fact that my kids were not fit to be brought out in public AND in church. They’re justamente at the age now where it’s becoming less stressful bringing them out in the real world, but to church? I just can’t chance it yet.
I’m not really interested in dealing with people’s loud stares and ahems. I really hate loud stares.
I LOVE poinsettias btw. I remember spending Christmas in Mexico with the in-laws and MIL had the most beautiful poinsettias growing right in her backyard. Awesome!

Yeah, everyone wants to be the mom with the flailing, crying bebe, not! For me, poinsettias are one of those flowers that are really stunning en masse. It’s like, “Don’t bring me A poinsettia, bring me at least five!” lol

I just got my epazote seeds in the mail today. I feel like it’s Christmas today. $2.99, that’s all it takes to make me happy. I can’t wait to have fresh epazote to toss into a boiling beans to expunge the flatulating-ness of the beans. That day will also feel like Christmas 😉 xx

Those doors are just gorgeous, and well maintained too.
A little extra distance and/or a wide angle lens usually does the trick but sometimes the building is too big. You did a good job of capturing it all the same.
I bet you’ll get some beautiful indoor shots when you do go.

I reckon someone’s made a wide angle lens adaption for the iPhone, not that I have one, hehe!
I’m glad you like the doors and I’m relieved you think I did a good job!
I love the doors. I can imagine lil ol ladies polishing them, like right out of a Murphy’s soap ad! 🙂

That’s a gorgeous cathedral, Joey. I would take the $3 tour in a heartbeat. You should go and report back…I bet there are many doors on the inside too.

I love the colour and grain on those doors. I think you did a great job of getting most of that building into a shot, Joey. It’s humongous, you would probably need to be airlifted to fit it all into one photograph.

This building looks like it belongs in England. Gorgeous photos, even if you didn’t get exactly what you wanted. Amazing place.

The intricate designs on this building are mind boggling. I also applaud your attempts at getting the entire cathedral in one photograph. Now you know why photographers take separate images and stitch them together. That’s beyond my knowledge but I know that is a possibility. Great post, Joey. I really enjoyed it!! Thank you! ❤

Thanks, Amy 🙂 Yes, I imagine it’s a skill one would develop if one took so many photos of giant buildings!

The purple floodlights make the building seem very gothic, don’t they? Looks like a huge building.

When I was piping, I had a lot of friends who were Scottish Rite Freemasons. Most were Shriners as well. That’s a pretty spectacular place…

This is a what I would call a bigass church! A tour of the interior would be so interesting … although when you mentioned vertigo from the spinning I nixed the idea of checking out the virtual tour. Umm – no thanks. I hate that spinning camera effect.
… but what an AMAZING door!!

The pieces sure look good! In absence of buying an expensive wide angle lens, take your clear glass soda bottle with you and after enjoying your refreshing drink see if you can shoot the image through it (let me know if it works so I can include a clear glass bottle in my camera bag). 🙂

If I’m ever conveniently carrying a glass bottle while photographing a large building, I will absolutely try it! 😛
