SoCS — Novel Writing

I’ve done National Novel Writing Month twice and won, but still haven’t finished a novel. Since I seemed to be on a rotation for every other year, this should be an on-NaNo year, but it’s not. It’s just not. Right now, I feel the only book I could write would be a book about how hard it is to write a novel.

And then I have that weird thing, that surreal thing about the crocodile, and I don’t know what exactly THAT is, but if it ends up being something, maybe someone else will tell me.

Apparently I find it easy to start a novel, as I have started three.

Things I struggle with that are still easier than completing a novel:

Putting Catticus in his carrier
Getting my husband to work in the yard
Trying on pants
Biting my tongue
Dealing with Diva Furnace
Icing a butter cake
Cleaning the ceiling fan
Hemming and mending clothes while people wear them
Morning blood draws
Biting my tongue
Determining which container the leftovers will fit in
Moving a washing machine from the laundry room to the back door by myself
Navigating around reality with Schizophrenic Neighbor
Rainbow Road on Mario Kart
Making the perfect roux
Blow-drying Moo’s hair
Biting my tongue
Dropping my children off with people I don’t know
Accepting compliments
Photographing the moon
Taking candy from a baby
Biting my tongue
Solving basic equations
Waiting for money
Driving in the rain at night
Understanding Bath & Body coupons
Adding my time sheet
Biting my tongue
Finding the perfect gift for people who have everything
Remembering to put socks on before the skinny jeans
Not being mad at Linda for giving us this prompt

How bout you?

First of all, kudos for ATTEMPTING to write a novel. I can barely finish a short story. The thought of producing a novel makes me want to talk to your husband about yard work!

  2. Hihi, sweet. Maybe this will help. 😀 (I understand that it’s a no-no to leave your own links under other people’s posts but this is from my old blog and it’s really not about me. Look at her. She means it.)

As I read your list of things that you find easier to do I find a repeating pattern of tongue biting. I am so sorry for you. I look forward to the day when you finally complete a novel. I know that it will be great. Now bite your tongue before you say something you’ve already said to me before on this topic.

Oh how I love your list of challenging tasks, Joey. I have seen my best friend try to put cats into their boxes! I usually chill cakes before frosting them. I still get cake clumps in the frosting.
Ooh, when I used to wear tight skinny jeans, I would have to wear sockless, slip on shoes! 😉

  5. I have actually finished a book, encouraged by my blog, but now I need to find a publisher, anyone reading this with any ideas I would truly love to hear from you!

Still working on my book. I did make progress though. I stared at a page for about 3 hours last night before I called it good. :/

I’ve never tried to write a novel, seems like too much for me to handle. Congrats of doing NaNoWriMo at all. Good job. As for your list I am particularly in tune with you on: “Determining which container the leftovers will fit in.” I cannot do this and end up washing extra objects because of it which makes me snarl.

  8. I can relate to putting the cat in a carrier. We had a cat too, and I really like cats btw and she hated the carrier. I had to go to urgent care with scratches on my hands from trying to get her into a carrier one time. The last time she went to a vet hospital the vet had to drug her before we could take her in.

UH, yeah. Our previous vet suggested throwing him in an old army laundry bag. Now we have this lil tiny bathroom. I put his carrier in the corner, inverted, carry him in there, and drop him, lock him…
And how the hell does the vet get him in so easy when it’s time to go home? What’s that even about?!
My other two are like, “Oh, crate time. Okay.”

  9. Starting is absolutely easier than finishing. It’s almost an act of pure willpower. After the middle bits the ending is much easier to write.

  10. I used to think I could write a novel, but now I think that if I ever write a book, it will be non-fiction of some type or a book of photography and writing. But I blog every day and have done so for close to five years now, so I take that as a win. 🙂

  11. I think motivation comes in waves. At least, it does for me. Your wave is probably on its way. A number of items on your list sounded very familiar. 🙂

  12. Anxious Mom says:

The last novel I attempted got a grand total of about 10 pages completed before I scrapped it (does that even count as an attempt?). I do have several that are halfway done that I will likely never touch again. Writing was easier pre-kids. LM is on a novel writing kick, so maybe I’ll just help him and slap my name under his 😉

Amen! I admit it — the first thing I thought when I read this prompt was “why haven’t *I* written a novel yet?!” Slacker…. ;0

“Biting my tongue”–Haha, yes, I think we can all relate to that one. In fact, sometimes it seems harder to do than write a novel, especially when I watch my kids do something I’ve asked them 100 times not to. 😉

Well with all of the tongue biting Dragon is out. I think we all need a Tommyknocker type writer. You think it and it writes it. It can even type your dreams. Neat huh.

I give you loads of credit for making the attempts. The thing I like about the random nature of my blog is that I can stop thinking about a subject as soon as I push ‘post’. When I read the stories you tell, I can’t help but wonder how many more hours are in a Central Time Zone day.

Photographing the moon is a particular problem for me. I have so many great ideas about effect and composition and interesting whatnot that I could easily freeze to death making the attempts.

  17. I’m writing one now. Mostly because I’ve never written a book before, and wanted one more dream fulfilled before I turn 40.

Ha ha ha ha 😀 I loved the way you ended the list. When I first saw the prompt, I kind of had an inkling many people are going to talk about their yet-to-finish/start novel – and the last item on your list just tied it up!

  23. I know that write a Novel isn’t a piece of cake but I’m sure that you will complete it and it will be great novel.
I look forward to the day when your novel will see the light of day.🙂

I love your list. I would put getting a cat into a cat carrier at the top of my list too. Twenty pounds of uncooperative furball who seems to suddenly have 12 legs.

… but yes, it would still be easier than writing a novel. I’m in awe of anyone who has.
