But mem?
Memorabilia. Not big on it. I like postcards.
Memoir. When I’m the last one alive, maybe.
Memories. Okay, but only the good ones.
Oh, hey, I have a really good memory. I know it’s hard to believe if you’ve recently read of my search for the yellow house, or how my time in Georgia is a blur, or how I forgot the tv was on the curb, but it’s true: I have a really good memory which serves myself and others around me well.
The Mister says I am his memory.
But then, he knew the television incident happened in the summer of 2008, which was R&R.
Some of it’s just paying attention, some of it’s obsessing, and some of it is because I see things as words. When people talk, I see their words in my head like they’re rolling off a typewriter, which is why I love to read subtitles in films and why I get pissed off about bad translations, and why, no matter how much you want me to, I will never forget what you said. Brain cut, copies, and pastes moments to appropriate headers.
My brain is highly effective at storing written words. I like that about me. I can caption events to remember them better.
It doesn’t prevent me from forgetting I left the kettle on or remembering where I put a particular piece of paper, and it certainly doesn’t keep me from asking myself if I have my keys 25 times a day, but it’s still a nifty gift.

That’s pretty cool that you see words when people are talking. Good way to remember conversations, and who said what. I don’t see words, but everything seems to me to be a snapshot or photo of everything…like I’m composing it into a frame and how it would look if I took a picture from different angles. Maybe I should have been a photographer, but no…I write words haha! Funny how that turned out. 🙂

Im big on memorabilia. I still have the fireworks shell that hit scumbag cousin the day we went to celebrate the 4th a month after I moved out here with the girl I “stole” from him…
A good portion of my “clutter” is things Ive gotten from other folks..
And I still have all the postcards youve sent me…Just dont ask me where I put em 😛

I have an Uncle who’s not big on taking pictures on vacations. He looks at the monument, park scene, waterfall… then blinks his eyes forcefully and says with confidence, ” Got it. Won’ t forget it.” Love him 🙂

I too have a great memory. I rely on it considerably … except for numbers. For some reason, numbers just don’t file as neatly into the brain cells.
… and oh yes, I could even give you a very detailed account of 2008. Not that you would want it … 🙂

That’s good. Calendaring is not my thing! The Mister seems better at that than I am.

I live by the calendar that has always had its place on the fridge. The simple act of writing something down seems to imprint it on my brain.

Joey, I have annoyed family, friends and ex-husbands with my remembering the sequence of disagreements and discussions. I am not sure if this memory started when they had me sit in kindergarten in front of what I call a ‘ticker tape machine’ where I would turn a side knob to read words. They called it ‘speed reading.’ Anyway, then I would have to complete comprehension questions. I misplace my cell phone, glasses and multiple items daily. I try valiantly to follow habits and place things in same locations. Any side interruption can change things and create time consuming searches!! This would be funny if I didn’t work. Not funny because panicking creates even more confusion. 😀

We all get sidetracked. I rarely lose stuff, but I make up for it with my clumsiness, break it all instead 😛 haha!

Uh huh, sounds like a wife thing. My wife will forget where she left her phone and make me dial it, but she can recall every word of an argument we had in 1991, etc.

My memories seem to be attached to some form of extreme emotion, good or bad. I wish I had your nifty talent. I have a friend I’ve known for so long and she remembers everything we did in high school. It just amazes me.

The only thing I seem to have a good grip on, memory-wise, is my mother’s medical narrative. We go to the doctor and I’m like, “In November, she had this symptom, and then this started, then Dr. Whatsis prescribed Priceyplanaplam and she got this symptom, so he switched her to Alsopriceynepenephrine….” And the doctor says, “…Have you ever been a nurse?” ha!

My husband remembers things I don’t and I sometimes wonder whether we are actually part of the same family. 🙂 Of course, I remember things he doesn’t, too, but still.

“When people talk, I see their words in my head.” It’s so interesting how our minds process language. I usually see images when people talk. Like you, I’m also a highly visual person. I’m terrible with spoken directions. 😉
