Chihuly & Stuff at The Children’s Museum

Every time someone posts about Chihuly installations, I say I will have to dig up pictures of mine and then I forget about it. Well, not today!

The first time I saw Chihuly’s work was in some coastal walk-in-off-the-street art gallery in the early 90’s.
I later bought a vase one would say was heavily-influenced by my memory of those Chihulys. Mine was a miniature knock-off lookin thang, from Target or Waccamaw or somethin. I used it to hold my cooking utensils in my first apartment. I do not know what happened to it. The vase I bought was not the point. The point was, before I knew who Chihuly was, he left a big impression on me. All those vivid colors.

So, like twenty years later, I see all this Chihuly stuff at The Children’s Museum and my MIL and I were all, “Oh wow!” and “Ooh!” snapping pictures and no one else cared…

and then we went to this room where the children could play with the plastic lookalikes, make their own sculptures, and well, here:

Isn’t that nifty?

Here’s a photo from the museum’s site.

It would be another three years before I watched a documentary and made the connection.

I have pictures of the fellas all standin around bored to tears, but I thought I’d share some more fun ones.
This is all 2009, when I was using an actual camera, not a phone. The wee ones were four and six because it was between their birthdays, and the big uns were teens. We’d come home for Thanksgiving and we’d gone to The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, because it is one of the best places on earth and because it is the largest children’s museum in the world.

Here’s Moo in The Mister’s arms, scared of the sounds of the dinosaur display.

Here’s a photo of Sassy, who just last month said to me, “Mama, you know how they have those diggers at the children’s museum? Those are so much fun. They should have those for big kids.”
“It’s called heavy construction equipment. You get the right license and you can play digger all day and night.”

sassy_digger

hates nature, loves diggers

Also, it’s important to note that certain activities at the museum are off limits to kids over the age of _, depending.
Here’s Moo, happily fishing.

I won’t show you the photo of Sassy pouting that she was two months too old to fish.

Now it’s Kylo Ren. Lawd.

This is one of my faves, because in my head I have many photos of them doing the same stuff when they were small.

These photos don’t even begin to show you the enormity or the amazement that is The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
I think we’re due for another trip don’t you?

Oh the photos I will take and subject you to…It’s all digital now, you know.

Very cool children’s museum. I love that Chihuly like thing! And of course the Chihuly. Since everyone loves Chihuly so much maybe we should make it our national art. You know, like the national bird, etc.

  3. I started liking Chihuly’s work around the same time you did. I grew up just south of Seattle and after moving away I made a point to go to the glass museum in Tacoma WA. Wow! About 10 years ago a friend of mine in S CA was getting married in Ojai. Walking down the street I spied Mr. Chihuly, I was so excited and no one else had a clue what I was going on and on about. Hmph! How dare they not know 🙄

I love children’s museums. I think they are some of the best places on earth. Ours are smaller but we have several within easy reach. If Sassy still likes digging stuff, check with your DOT. Ours used to have an open house for school age kids where they let them tour and actually “play” with some real machines. Our school did a field trip there twice. I tried so hard to chaperone, but it was after our daughter had graduated 😦

I’m looking forward to future pics.

I’m one of the rare people who doesn’t adore Chihuly. If I were to install it in a children’s museum, I’d do it in such a was as to allow the kids to use a hammer to smash it to bits. Probably just as well that I’m not in charge of such things. However, on the other hand, the museum itself looks like oodles of fun.

I use to love taking my daughter to childrens museums. Now that she’s 19 we go to art museums. Love going and spending time with her, but I miss those earlier days too.

Plastic Chihuly for the kids to play with–what a brilliant idea! We had a Chihuly exhibit here in town several years and it was a mob scene to get it, but so well worth it.

The Chihuly art looks pretty cool. I’ve never heard of this before. I like the museum photos. We don’t have one that’s called that, but we do have a Science Spectrum place, where there are all kinds of hands on things for kids to try out. 🙂

  10. I first saw Chihuly’s work at the Akron Art Museum and fell immediately and deeply in love. I’ve since seen installations in Kew Gardens and the Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens, a Christmas tree in the White House quite a few years ago, and various pieces here and there. Still in love!

I love Moo, Sassy, Sissy and Bubba! (and Simon, too.) I liked Moo and the Mister photo, too. So cute she is! ❤ The Mister hula hooping "would have been" my favorite picture.
Chihuly is an inspiration to more people than we could ever imagine, Joey! Let's nominate him to National Artist or Sculptor!
I am excited that his color, shapes and shiny glass stuff got you a case that for some time held your kitchen utensils. I enjoyed this post and my favorite is Sassy ❤ with her boyfriend, Yoda. 😀

Ignoramus question, but did Chihuly do the glasswork at the Bellagio in Vegas? What you pictured looks so much what I remember about that.

That place looks amazing! Wish it were closer. We have a very small children’s museum in the town over with some cool stuff, but nothing remotely like that.

Fun fotos! Charlie and I keep meaning to go to the Children’s Museum, but we just don’t like to leave home. Coupla stick-in-the-muds. We’ve been to children’s museums here and there, including the science museum in Louisville, back when kids were little. Dinosaurs were always favorite.

I love when we finally get to dig up the pics we want to share (I have a small list of ones to harvest) and how nice that they have the plastic ones for the children.
glass art amazes me – and hm, wonder what happened to that 90’s knock-off you had….

still hard to believe the 90’s were so long ago, seriously, feels like 2001 was only a few years ago and now here we are ready to bring in 2017.

better go back and look at all this colorful art in your photos – and get off the time flies kick….

    🙂
