Who are we kidding? I’m always a bargain when it comes to doors.
The Motterns and Master Boombastic spent Saturday night out on the town. Woo-hoo! We almost never do that. We do that even less often than we Woo-hoo!
Remember this place? The Murat?
(After my Murat post, my mother commented, “Your grandfather had a big hand in the tile work.” That’s neat, hm? I’ll investigate that sometime. Lotsa marble there.)
Some of you asked about The Murat’s interior, and that happens to be our first #ThursdayDoors venue.
We went for a Coen Brothers double feature in The Egyptian Room. We’d never been, and someone generously offered tickets, so we went.
They serve beer there.
We did not partake
But look! Interior shots!
It’s really dark in The Murat. My iPhone really likes light, but I tried…
Let’s focus on the lighting!
The premise of Movie Night at The Murat is that you file into the ballroom with your pillows and blankets and stuffies and snacks, set up a pickanick, plop a squat, and chill.
Kinda groovy.
How groovy it is depends on your tolerance for cold, hard floors. I was content for the first 30 minutes. I’d settled into spooning Moo and then some late arrival plopped her squat right in our little eye hole. After that, I was restless. Moo and I were wibble-wobbling all over one another and the floor got colder and harder. My tushie, which has substantial padding, began to ache about an hour in.
The Mister never got comfortable, not even a little bit.
Sassy and Master Boombastic had no complaints, because young love probably spent most of The Big Lebowski nose-booping and making googly eyes at one another.
Toward the end, I couldn’t find the point of this experience. Like, I’m glad we had the experience, and it’s good to try new things, but I wonder why people flock into the venue? There are tables and chairs for VIP seating. They cost more money, and they’re just chairs. Not like theatre seats. Not recliners. Not even as soft as slipper chairs. You can take your own chairs, but who wants to lug chairs around?
We did not stay for Oh Brother Where Art Thou? because The Mister hates the music from the movie even though he hasn’t seen the movie. And also, cause my tushie said NO.
I suggested someday soon, we’d invite Master Boombastic over to watch Oh Brother Where Art Thou? in our home.
Where The Mister can avoid it.
Where it is warm.
Where there is plush furniture.
Where we all have a clear line of vision.
Where the beer is Guinness or Matilda or Lambic Framboise.
Where parking is free and traffic is light, even on Saturday night.
So then, being the wild and crazy people we are, we drove to Broad Ripple, where traffic is worse.
I hadn’t been to Broad Ripple on a Saturday night since I was…young single drunk.
And why would we do such a thing?
Because Master Boombastic said there’s a place called Insomnia Cookies, where you can get fresh-baked cookies and ICE CREAM until some Joey-preferred-pre-dawn-hour of the morning.
Things like this go a long way toward makin me feel like this is a great time to be alive.
Yes, they deliver.
It smelled delicious, but I had eaten half a bag of Skinny Pop and maybe 10 handfuls of M&Ms, so I just didn’t have it in me. And also…they don’t have cones. I mighta been able to stomach a scoop of vanilla if only they’d had cones.
Moo didn’t have it in her, either, but everyone else was more than happy to eat the yummies.
Overall, it was a great way to be out: good company, great flick, and new doors.

Looks like a lovely place and a good double-bill! I wouldn’t have made it past the first one either. Floor-sitting doesn’t work for these old bones any more…

What a beautiful structure….that one. But, I’d never lasted even an hour on that hard floor. The anytime cookie place…different story. That was an evening OUT ! 💛 💚 💙

Beautiful place, but I wouldn’t park on the floor. I love your pictures. I thought you might find a line of people at the cookie place with the munchies.

Right? Once is enough.
There was a line at the cookie shop. When we went in, we were the only people and it felt full. When we left, we had to exit before the crowd could come in. It’s standing room only in there. There did appear to be some munchies victims in the line 😉

Such a cool building. The thought of getting all snuggly on the floor sounds fine in theory. But I don’t think I’d like it either, I don’t even watch t.v. on the floor any more. If I’m paying for a movie, I want a comfy seat that lets me sit back and enjoy.

Yeah, that venue sounds like a little slice o’ hell. Can’t believe the cookie place didn’t have, like, cookie cones. How awesome would that be? You need to make some and sell them the idea in exchange for free cookies and ice cream for life.
Oh, and your pictures are great! I love the ones of the light fixtures, with the light patterns on the ceiling.

Cookies. Warm to the touch and melt in your mouth Cookies. How glorious. The Murat is a beautiful building. Not sure about their movie night. I think the drive in would be more fun.

This is a spectacular interior indeed. But let me get it: it’s a cinema with the usual screen in front and then only floor to sit on (well, and cushions) unless you pay for VIP seats? Do you bring your own cushions or are they there? Do you have to fight for them or are they assigned? Can you drink in there? Bring that beer from the bar? Pardon my curiosity but I have never seen something like that. I’m sorry that you suffered too much to enjoy it. But yeah for cookies.

It is not a cinema, but rather, a screen comes down from the ceiling. It is not large to the scale of cinema. You can take the beer anywhere, they just put a green bracelet on those who are of age. Yes, floor, take your own pillows/cushions.
As I say, it was an experience.

What fun! I’m a fan of trying new things, but I never would have made it with being on the floor. What a cool interior that place has, I bet it’s haunted. 😉 I hope you at least got a cookie To Go? One should never pass up cookies…

I did not experience any ghosts, but I’m open to it. It’s a beautiful place, and I recommend walking around in it rather than sitting 🙂 I did not get a cookie to go…and now I wonder if I should regret that…

I suspect it’s a marketing ploy, that cold hard floor. Restless ouching patrons will want to have a BEER!

Great photos of the interior. I love the arched stain glass window thing. I’m guessing that’s at the top of something down below (I hope I didn’t miss that photo).
Cold hard floor? No, not this guy. I think I’ve done some things for the last time, and that definitely one of them. Late night cookies? Yes, I will always make room.

I don’t remember the Murat, and it’s such a GORGEOUS building I’m sure, or at least reasonably sure, I would have remembered it. The interior shots add to how impressive this building really is.
Sitting on a cold, hard floor is no way to enjoy a movie and I would have wanted to bail too … although I did like the movie Oh Brother Where Art Thou? … music and all!
… but Insomnia Cookies sound divine and now I have a craving.

Great post Joey sounds like a fun night.
The interior is gorgeous. They really went out of their way to make these places memorable back then, not like strip mall multiplexes today.
I couldn’t handle floor sitting for more than a few minutes either.
Insomnia Cookies delivers!!!? No THAT is way cool.

The building is just phenomenal. Wow. So gorgeous. But sitting on a hard, cold floor to watch a movie? Um no. Anything called Insomnia Cookies has got to be the absolute yum. I’m all in for that. I’m sure I woulda had room hahahaha.

That building is stunning. And the stained glass! Oh my! But I would totally pass on sitting on the floor. I haven’t been, but my hometown has a movie theater with actual recliner style seats…and they serve beer and wine. The regular theater there started serving beer and wine. I’m guessing to keep patrons.

The building and interior look really elegant. I’d pass on sitting on the floor, though. I don’t get on the floor in my own house any more. It would take a lot of help to get me back up! Now those cookies! Yes! 🙂

Your movie venue reminds me of movie night in the cafeteria in college. Never comfortable, always awkward, with lousy snacks and watered down soda. I see no point in it. The cookie place sounds inviting, however.

Sounds like fun aside from sitting on the floor. Yuck. We recently found a theater nearby that has these massive leather recliners. It was heavenly, aside from my husband getting too comfortable and dozing off.

I like to watch Shakespeare in Schiller Park (German Village south of Columbus). I liked in my younger days going to see laser shows on the buildings of Columbus listening to music. The Love Shack song with its lit up version was hysterical. 🙂
I am sure I would need a chair pad or two under my behind. I would rather watch it in a nice theatre seat or lounge on my own sofa or grown children’s sofas. 🙂
