SoCS — Hair

Hair.
Oh boy.
I don’t think I have time to write all about my hair. In fact, I know I don’t, because I had to get up stupid, crazy early on a friggin Saturday so I can take my talented, amazing children to an important string competition in BFE, which is what I call any place in Indiana where there are more churches than bars, where corners are littered with cows instead of empty liquor bottles, and I’m not sayin that’s a bad thing at all, but it is early and cold and it’s unfair that children expect parental support and involvement in the morning on a weekend because I am already tired from early morning rehearsals on schooldays.

I got an email about a concert this month and praise be to puppies, it’s in the evening. But I bet the rehearsals aren’t.

I remember when they banged on pots and pans, when they had toy instruments. That never started before 9am, plus, I could stay home in my sweats and drink coffee and smile at their racket.

My hair takes hours to dry on its own and I hate blowing out my hair like I hate morning. Rather than wake at 4am, I opted to wash my hair last night and let it dry while I slept. I knew I would look like this when I woke up. I also knew I would wear my trusty white sweater with the big snag. My sweater and my hair represent me — Don’t touch, I am one strand away from unraveling.

  1. It’s the last act of a desperate rebel when she goes to bed with wet hair. Been there. Snagged that.

Currently debating which line I ❤ more: "my sweater and my hair represent me" OR "it's unfair that children expect parental support." Dunno, I'm sniggering pretty hard at both…

Sniggering — to be clear — from the warmth and comfort of my own bed, where I am currently snuggled under an ample comforter, surrounded by pillows and bathed in the morning light of a sun long since up. And yes, you have permission to now hate me.

  3. That last line is classic.

I feel your pain. I know the dilemma you face about letting hair dry naturally, which translates to about half a day, OR trying to blow out your hair early in the morning when you aren’t awake. There is no win here. My sympathies.

  5. First of all, I was glad to read that the hair wasn’t in the coffee cup (drained and refilled by now, I’m sure.) You’re a braver woman than I to wash your hair at night and then sleep on it (literally and figuratively)!! If I were a knitter, I’d be standing by, needles at the ready, to ravel you back up when the unraveling process begins. As I’m not, I’ll just hope that the morning has improved immensely!

  6. Is it just me? I really want to pull on the snag now. 😂 I figured out what BFE meant as soon as you mentioned the cows in Indiana. It could be worse, they could be camels and then you would be really hot and ain’t nobody wants you hot and snaggled in the wee morning, Saturday hours.

Praise be to puppies! I love how you keep it real and wear it well.

  8. We homeschooled. I remember one horribly cold winter morning when we were all in a group in the car at some ungodly hour before dawn, on our way to a competition in Philadelphia for Future Cities, when our biggest concern was getting that 4′ x 8′ piece of plywood with a city on it into the back of the van without knocking off any tiny trees. (Maybe it was two 4′ x 4′ pieces? that sounds better.)

Those days are over now, the competitions over, the money for college earned, spent, the babies all over 25 and out on their own (with us still in the background, but as little as possible).

Enjoy. Take the camcorder with you and be that mom. Remember to update your home movies as each new digital medium supersedes the previous version. They will love it when you show them themselves as little ones, and it will pay you back for being ‘that mom.’

It is so important to support their endeavors and passions. But woe is me in the early hours.
I laughed about you putting a city in your van! Dioramas can be messy 😛 But they’re also FUN!
I never record their performances, but I do record their practices — as do they. I think it’s amazing how many more pictures and videos these kids have compared to my older two. Kids born now will have a hard time NOT having enormous digital files! So nice, digital, so nice! 🙂

Your hair sounds as complex as mine and sends just about the same message.

  10. Ha, ha, very good, one strand away from unraveling. I always hated the early morning soccer games. What we do for our kids. 🙂

Wait, you would look like WHAT? I looked all over for the photo! Hah, I knew you had to get up early sometimes!

I thought about posting a photo, but if I do the bed-head too often, people will think I always look like that! LOL
I do, Luanne, I have to get up early sometimes. And it’s always awful! 😛 I look forward to spring break sleep-ins! And oh, summer vacation!

Just do like Arlo Guthrie: stay up good and late the night before so you look and feel your best in the morning.

I ALWAYS wash my hair at night. I simply don’t have the damn patience to stand there and blow desiccating hot air at my head.

I loved the last line on your post! The white sweater and unruly hair are “One hair away from unraveling.”
This line reminds me of Jean Kerr’s saying she told her kids not to hang out of the second or third floor’s windows but forgot to say, Please don’t eat the daisies.

  19. This is why my hair is always in a topknot. It takes forever to dry. I am way to impatient for that. And mornings…ummm…no thank you.

Those topknots leave you with some pretty waves later, too 😉

I got an unmoderated comment from a woman who told me I was selfish and self-centered for complaining about kid activities in the morning and it was all I could do to ignore it instead of all-capping her “YOU THINK THE TEENAGERS LIKED GETTING UP AT 6 ON SATURDAY?!?” Psh.

  20. I have a couple of sweatshirts I wear every year and carefully fold them away until the next one. I wore one down to coffee last weekend (very casual), and this lady kept staring at it. Finally, she asked if it was a Northern Reflections shirt, and I said yes. She looked at me and said ‘that must be older than dirt’ because I haven’t worn one of them in years. I did crack a smile but didn’t appreciate her sarcasm about my favorite winter attire. 🙂
