I researched my building for today’s #ThursdayDoors and discovered it was not always the tidy, stately gem it is today.
First I found it’s an apartment building, largely inhabited by seniors. It’s a Section 8 place. Leasing requires its inhabitants earn no more than $28,000 a year and they cannot be full-time students. For $640 a month, renters can have a small open living space with one bedroom, one bath. The amenities aren’t fancy, but it’s a perfectly functional space for one or two who prefer to live unencumbered.
According to listings, the lobby is marbled and there is a lovely green space round the back.
It’s been an apartment building since at least the 1946 census. The built date is not available.
The building was updated in 2013, when it sold for $266,000. At that time…
As far as I can tell, we #ThursdayDoors people are fans of rehabilitation, and I thought you’d enjoy knowing all that.
I am so glad they didn’t put some standard glass doors on this frontage.

Oh my. I am so happy they restored that original door. Yes, I love seeing buildings being restored and maintained, but I hate when they shove in an aluminum and glass slab of a door that looks like the entry to the Quickie Mart. Thanks for the historic photo.

I’m SO glad this building was returned to its former beauty! It was brilliant, keeping that door. Such a lot of character in that brick, stone, and wood.

That is a wonderful choice for a front door on a building like that. It’s nice to see they found a GOOD use for the building. Affordable housing for those on fixed incomes is so important.
Any chance they have an elevator? I’m thinking of my mom who lives on a second floor with bad knees and a narrow stairway… 🙂

I went back and looked, and no, no elevator. Stairs seem narrow as well. BUT! They have 3 wheelchair accessible apartments and a chair lift, so you know, they care. A little. 😉

The built date is unknown. I don’t see any indication of Masons, particularly the lack of a cornerstone, but since we don’t know, who knows?

Wow, beautiful transformation! And, damn, that graffiti…just thinking about hanging outside the window enough to reach certain places makes me nervous!

I think it’s high too! But I cannot deny the location is optimal for people who want a quiet building and anything and everything just outside. I guess for some it’s worth the cost? I dunno.
