When it comes to fashion, fashion generally laughs in my face. I despise most trends, and usually succumb to them only when they’re literally the only things available. I am practical about clothing purchases. My closet is dull. “Does it come in white?” I have dressed like someone’s mother, or like a schoolmarm, my entire adult life. Not only am I classic, read: boring and traditional, but I’m also old school. You won’t find me wearing white pants after Labor Day or wool slacks and suede shoes in April. I can’t. It’s been bred into me. That, and that underwear are meant to be worn under clothes.
So when spring comes, I have to shop. I hate shopping.
I order as much as I can online.
I cyber-shopped two new dresses — retail $180, purchased by me for $45. Got two new blouses from $54 to $18. I hate the hunting and scrolling, but it pays off.
I ordered a cheap spring and summer bag last week. It was $20 and I was pleased that I found it on the 4th page instead of the 40th. I read the reviews. Other reviewers commented on how cheaply made it is, how the interior is nylon, how the straps aren’t real leather. I’m not sure what people think the cost of leather is, but I assume any brand new handbag for $20 is cheap, and therefore, cheaply made, and if any actual leather is used, it’s from a super ugly cow.
I like my cheap bag. It’ll see me through the summer. Summer is very throw-it-in-a-bag-and-go. Winter finds me wanting genuine leather and structure, you know how textural winter can be…
But shoes and pants… Ugh. They must be tried on, WHY DO THEY RANGE SO MUCH IN SIZE AND FIT?!? That means I have to go out and get them.
Shoes are an ongoing thing. Now that all of us are in the adult sizes, we really make out on the coupon deals. Still, my idea of a good time is not ninety minutes in the shoe store. And FYI, it takes The Mister MUCH LONGER to shop for shoes in comparison to us girls.
I like to thrift for clothes. Most of my costly, well-made clothes are secondhand, or at the very least, bought off-season at a fraction of the cost. For me to pay full price for a clothes, I have to love it in a most endearing way. I think a lot of what’s out there has a mighty high opinion of itself. If I’m going to spend $68 on a shirt, I expect it to last five years, buttons and all.
I found some cheap pants — $40 to $12.99 — XS, S, M, L, XL — Oh my favorite! Reviewers would tell you the knees bag at the end of the day and that the backside is totally unflattering. But I will tell you they were marked down to $12.99, they’re super soft, wash and dry like a dream, I don’t think anyone looks at my knees, and I have long blouses to hide that hideous pocket placement. I am sad only one color was available.
Really, I’m sad I have to wear clothes of a fashionable sort. Do I NOT look spectacular in sweat pants and holey sweaters?!?
Socks are way more comfy than shoes.

I have expensive taste. Show me a magazine glossy of ten fashion pieces, and I will prefer the most expensive ones before looking at the prices. But I won’t pay for it, not because I can’t afford to, but because I’m cheap.
I go into every purchase with my own expectations of cost. The regret of not buying something pales in comparison to purchase remorse.

Lots of this sound like my wife, except the “it takes the Mister longer to buy shoes” part. I can buy shoes in a heartbeat. See them, like them, “size 12 please” and done. If I really like them, I might buy two pairs. I’ve asked her “what size shoe do you wear?” and I get that “what the heck is wrong with you?” look back.

Womens’ shoe sizes vary so much that I have a pair of 6.5 and 9.5 and lots of 7 & 8 between them. It’s maddening! Your wife will understand completely.

I never buy full price, which is why I’ve been shopping for a dress to go to a semi-formal wedding at the end of July NOW. By the time I find what I want, I can wait for the big sale to get it.
I also commiserate with you on sizing. No one sizes anything the same, including shoes. I only buy shoes from amazon at this point and only the ones I can return for free. Hub has the same issue with shoes because his feet are size 13-15 and EE-EEEE depending on the manufacturer. And I hate shopping, so I wear stuff that is years and years old, but then again I don’t go to work outside the house so it’s rare that I need to wear something other than lounge pants and tank tops.

For your dress, have you looked on eshakti? They are custom, fitting and choices on sleeves, hems, necklines. Mentor ordered a dress for a wedding from there and she was very pleased. I’ve browsed several times and I know I will order some dresses in the fall.
I know a lot of people with wide feet, and I feel for them, cause it is SO HARD for them to find shoes.
It didn’t used to be like that. I think online has helped in that department, but I know it’s still lacking in selection.

I have wide feet, too, which is part of my issue. The other part is that I have to be careful of what the shoes do to my knees, so it’s a double-whammy that I have bad feet and bad knees. 😦

I am MUCH more likely to buy things off a sale rack, and now that we’ve joined Amazon Prime I’ve discovered the beauty of online shopping for clothes. Because the time investment in driving to stores along with the psychological assault of 3 way mirrors in fluorescent lighting is too tragic to bear.
But shoes and pants? Those take almost as much patience to do online because if there’s anything I like less than paying too much for clothes, it’s paying for clothes that don’t fit and not returning them.

Like you style kid. I used to be a clothes horse. Now I am just an old nag that wears clothes. I always shop thrift stores. Have you been to Mission 27? Got great deals on clothes. Bought a nice and heavy leather jacket for 8 bucks. I never pay retail. If it ain’t at least 30 % off it stays on the rack.

I love, love, love funky socks.
Sometimes I thrift, but that’s for the kids and husband since I am extremely picky about what I wear. (Most people wouldn’t think that by looking at me though.) I suck at all the fashion, but things have to feel just right or I’m not wearing it. And I like shirts to be a little funky, but not in a rainbow-threw-up-on-it way. And, god, shoes. I’ve been shopping for a pair of good sneakers off and on for the last six months. Still can’t find a pair that looks and fits just right. My Converses are killing my feet, but they look sooooo good.

We have one in the town over, plus Shoe Carnival, Shoe Dept., and Rack Room. Bunions complicate the heck out of shoe shopping for me. I am looking around for good inserts to put in my Converses now. If I can find something that has support in the right places, then I’ll be good and can just go buy those teal Converses I’ve been eyeing 😀

I hate clothes shopping, and tend to wear what I have forever. When I do buy clothes, I go for traditional styles and quality. Which means that I don’t have lots of clothes, but I do have ones that last– and defy trends in the most boring way possible.

There once was a time when I enjoyed clothes shopping, but those days are long gone. Most of my closet is black and I’ve been wearing the same shirts to work for probably seven or more years. I have some new things for when I’m not at work, but for the most part my go-to outfits consist of jeans or yoga pants and a comfortable shirt.

I hate clothes shopping and I hate paying full price (or even a too-high sale price.) I have several go-to thrift stores near us and that’s where I shop. Even then, some days I go in and think, “I can’t even look through all this stuff. I have to leave now!” I’ve gotten lots of name-brand things at those stores that bring in lots of compliments. I feel good that I spent so little. I tend to shop for shoes at DSW but again, sometimes their big selection is more than I can do. Every time I’m at Target, I go through the athletic section and see if Champion items are are sale or clearance. I like socks but find it frustrating that it’s hard to find natural fiber (or mostly.) Marshall’s and TJMaxx (owned by the same company) are places I shop sometimes as well.
I do like nice clothes but as we don’t go many places where I really need to dress up (and how many different outfits can I wear to church?), I have plenty…although I do need some “new” dresses.
Sizes. Grrrr! First of all, women’s sizes have been lowered so that I now wear a size I never wore in high school! Secondly, if you can find a brand where the same size fits the same all the time, it’s a pearl beyond price.
But enough about shopping. It’s time to alternate reading and working around the house C is also for “Cheer!”

I too suffer from the sensory overload of shopping. I like to go to DSW on weeknights, after dinner. Hardly anyone there then.
I used to shop at Marshall’s and TJMaxx quite a bit in Georgia, but I don’t now…
Before I took this job, I needed a handful of nice options for outings. Now, I only get to look like authentic me on Casual Friday 😉

I like fashion, Joey, but I don’t shop for clothes like I used to when I had the special I-spend-too-much-money-at-Kohl’s card. Now I shop thrift stores and the after season 50-80% off racks. I rarely pay full price unless, like you, it’s an absolute must have.

Atta Girl! I think the Kohl’s is wonderful, but I feel that the coupons could lead people to compulsive shopping. Like, you go in, spend a pile, and they give you coupons to come back almost immediately after! Well, no. I JUST shopped. I will return when I need to shop again, and then I don’t get to take full advantage of coupons.
So if one is Seriously Into Coupons, Kohl’s could lead to compulsive shopping! I will say I save dramatically when I shop there, but I don’t wanna do it EVERY week. Ick.

I am cheap/thrifty, however you spell it. When it comes to clothes, always go for the bargains, discounts, outlet stores. I keep the stuff forever…my favorite jeans must be 15 years old. I don’t understand what is happening to women’s sizing, mine are all over the place, so shopping online is not attracting me. The mall, to me, is a good place to walk, meet friends, have lunch.

I can’t hardly maneuver through malls here. I’m pretty sure we need more malls. The crowds are overwhelming! I go maybe once or twice a year, because the girls obsess over Build-A-Bear 😀
I think my fave jeans are only 12, since Moo is 13.
I don’t know what’s up with sizing, either. Maybe the doctor’s charts and the clothing sizing people should work together to form a consensus! lol I’ve noticed it’s even more dramatic in the juniors’ sizing.

I am, and always have been, a label shopper. Yes, I am a snobby biotch that way. But I love spending $3.99 for my labels at GW–my friendly GoodWill store. A few of us at work have a joke about that: “Cute top.” “Thanks! Got it at GW!” Works for me.

The other day, I put on my jacket, and realized it’s prolly 25 years old. I don’t remember what I paid for it but, divided by 25 years of wear, it was cheap. If it ain’t on sale, I don’t buy it. Daughter #4, when she was little enough to ride in the grocery cart seat, drew my attention by throwing items out as fast as I put them in. She was hardly old enough to talk, but she explained: “Too ‘spensive! Too ‘spensive!” That’s my girl.

Ye Olde Barn Jacket, my beloved, is 19 now. Well, it’s older, because the guy who gave it to me had it for however long…I got it in exchange for some unpaid rent. I scored.

The only place I like shopping besides bookstores, is the thrift stores. I can always find a top of some sort there. Mainly my stuff is all black. The stretchy yoga pants (I gave up jeans a long time ago) and black tops, maybe with some little embellishments. But, the thing is to accessorize with some fun and funky jewelry. I have a lot of that, which I mostly make myself, or find at yard sales, and when I do go somewhere, I wear a lot of them at a time. If I find something I really like, I wear it till it falls apart and wish I had more of them. Shoes…don’t like them. I only have the ugly crocs or flip flop crocs. Now purses/handbags…the more crazy and unique the better. Can’t resist those. I have a dress…yeah, a dress. It’s black with a cat’s face on the front. I wear it on Halloween with my skull light jacket/top thing. 🙂

I buy most of my clothes second hand, because I’m cheap and because I’m all about recycling. I like to think of myself as a fashion rebel. Though my friend who loves to shop gave me several pairs of expensive second-hand slacks and they did fit a lot better than the cheap brands that were the same size.

I don’t care what’s in fashion. I go for comfort, especially since I “retired” from my office job. Now, I wear a lot of yoga pants and comfy, stretchy skirts, and second hand stuff. I wear the same comfy crock sandals from mid spring to mid fall and I don’t paint my toenails. Last summer I went to a writer’s conference and everyone wearing sandals had painted toenails. I mean all the women except me. I no longer care.

Cheap and frugal and hate the malls, all the way. Luckily, I have had some success buying shoes online. The one downside of moving so far up north is that there are not enough people to support the usual second hand shops like Goodwill and Valu Village (pronounced with a French accent va-LOO vee-LAGSH)

Yeah, you’d think by now there would be some sort of standard for sizes. Clothing and shoes both are never the same depending on brand. Drives me nuts. My entire life people would say “What size shoes do you wear?” And I’m always like “Who made them?” Ugh.

Lucky him. If I wear Nike I need a certain size, and it’s different than any other shoes. I’m somewhere between 11.5 and 13 depending. Also, my left foot is bigger than my right, so I have to always try on the left shoe to make sure it’s good.

LOL Yeah, they are narrow. I have a hard time finding shoes that are comfortable for standing long periods of time. Nike Air’s are about the only thing I can wear like that, and I hate it because I’m not a huge fan of Nike. The last pair I bought, I got at a Nike outlet store. I forgot to try the left shoe on, so it’s tight, and if I wear those for a long time my toes hurt. But, when I got them I had to undo the laces a lot just so they would fit, because of the narrowness. Not so bad if you do that, but still, would be nice to get some wide Nike’s.

When I worked on my feet, I was told it’s best to switch shoes. Like not wear the same pair two days in a row, three if you can. It took me a while to get shoe rich enough to do it. Gel insoles too. Mmhm, that’s where it’s at. But standing sucks. I’d rather move. So much pressure to stand.

I’ve never heard that, but it sound like a good idea, switching shoes every day. I could do that. I eventually went and got a pair of work shoes at Payless, and it turns out they’re actually pretty comfy, so I just stick with those. I try to avoid my Nike’s now because of the toe thing, but eventually I’ll go get another pair of Nike’s that actually fit, and then maybe I’ll switch them up every two days at work. Great idea! I knew I kept you around for something 😛

I go home, take shoes and bra off at the door. If someone comes to door, I cross arms over boobs. I have sweats and fleece pants plus big t-shirts while alone. I go barefoot most of the year, Joey!
I like buying clothes and gifts on sale almost a year ahead. I bought my two brothers their Christmas sweaters already. For my main wardrobe, I have “hand me up” clothes from my youngest daughter, Felicia. I figure I paid for a portion of most of her stuff since I still give her money towards her college loans. She goes to outlets and gives me her jewelry she wore with the items. Unless someone studies her FB, no one would guess this. She is “old school” in her clothing. Work clothes for warehouse comes from quarter yard sales or Goodwill.
*I love thrift shops with nice styles and better sewn clothes. We have some overlapping choices of where to buy stuff, but I just recently started buying a few things online. Way behind the rest of the world. 😀

I am not a dedicated follower of fashion by any means. In fact, if I do where somehing that is ‘trendy’ it is more by accident than design.
I get a lot of stuff second hand or cheap but sometimes I do like to splash out if it is for a special occasion. 🙂

I have spent oodles on dresses. I bought a gorgeous pink gown for prom on spring break my senior year. It was on sale for $189. I loved that dress. I wish the photos had been better, but ah, I remember it fondly…

I live in jeans, and if I dress up that means Dockers and a sweater. Then I pray no one dies because I do not want to have to find something to wear. 🙂

Clotheshorse, but no budget for the clothes I’d love to own. I never shopped designer shoes or bags Sunglasses, and accessories are another story though.
I prefer shopping while on sale, but if it’s something that fits well that I really like I’ll pay full price knowing in my size it won’t be around come sale time. 😦
I detest shopping for shoes. I’m super picky, have a really narrow heel, and the shoes have to be comfy. It takes forever to find the right shoe, and when I find “the pair” I splurge and buy 2 pair. One for now, and one pair for down the road.
I recently heard about a second-hand online store called Thredup.com I signed up and am tempted to try it with a top, and accessories. Have you heard of them or tried them? https://www.thredup.com/

If your feet are hard to fit, buying two pair of a winning shoe seems VERY practical to me!

Mhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Last year I ordered some clothes online for the first time (even bras). They fit surprisingly well, but in most cases I didn’t like the feel of the materials I landed. As if they know perfectly well no way they would sell any of that crap in a normal shop where people can still feel stuff up. So I landed a green coat that feels like a uniform. Let’s face it: if we buy based on the looks and not the feels, then it’s only the others who profit when they look at you wearing something. And with people is the same. I need to buy some jeans right now but Italian women are so small. No wonder amore calls me Tedescona (big German). He doesn’t call me that to my face though. I’m glad you included the socks. I always love buying socks.

Even most socks are made for women with more slender legs than I’ve got! I’m super picky about fabric, too.

I’m cheap! Mine are mostly t-shirts and jeans. I like fashionable stuff but I’m like you, don’t want to pay the price. Clothes are last in the budget unless things get ruined. 🙂 So I have decades of clothes still wearable. Yes, decades. I am about to clean that closet out, because so many I don’t wear, they look good just don’t wear. I love clearance racks anywhere. LOL. I have yet to really buy online. Maybe once I start I feel I won’t quit. LOL. When I was growing up I had mostly garage sale clothes. I didn’t get new clothes unless it was Christmas or I bought it. Clothes were worn until they were not wearable. I stay with that. Drives my kids nuts. I do like bags. Again, clearance. lol
