Oh Give Me a Home

A-Z through April — O

Oh my, we’re already to O.

Okay, so today I thought about Oh give me a home, as in “Home on the Range” twang twang … Cept where the deer and antelope are on my plate. Antelope is so juicy and tender. Also, I like clouds just fine, and my night skies are bright because city lights. So, like, not anything at all to do with the actual song, but more, you know, the spirit of Oh give me a home.

Cause home. Heart-heart.

This is one of those times of year where I delight in the splendor that is home. I’m never eager for spring, but when it comes, I embrace it. I get all twitterpated about my surroundings. Y’all, the grass, it is SO GREEN. Bright, colorful bulbs sway in the breeze. And the trees bud bits of yellow and light green against a backdrop of MORE GREEN and EVERGREEN, with pops of purples, pinks, and whites from all the blossoms and great shocks of bright yellow forsythia wave to me. Mmm.

Hell, even the ‘weeds’ are pretty.

Dark loamy earth with ferns unfurling.

The scent of lilacs and fresh rain.

Tiny bells on lily of the valley.

It’s. So. Pretty.
So mild.

(Refresher: In southeast Georgia, spring has no romance. Spring in southeast Georgia is not alluring. Spring in southeast Georgia means the azaleas open and then it’s all just brutal sun, fire ant bites, and swamp ass/puddle bra until January. Grass like hay. Ground hard red clay.)

Here, spring is an occasion!
I celebrate it with glee.
How could I not, with it being so beautiful and me so grateful to be home?

I hope this post illustrates the magnitude of my joy.

Perhaps Sadie expresses it best.

Love that picture of Sadie. And, I don’t think I’ve ever heard a description of Georgia as good as “swamp ass/puddle bra” – Thanks for the smile and the beautiful spring photos – green is good.

  3. The ferns were a special treat for me. I don’t usually see them unfurling in my garden. Enjoy the beauty while you can still stand to be outside.

I have a love-hate relationship with spring. The pollen and the mold make my eyes itch powerful awful, but I love the bright colors that all the sun and rain bring. Your photos are perfect, especially Sadie doing her doggy wiggle in the grass.

I’m sorry about your allergies ruining the perfection. I take meds cause I’m happy I don’t need shots anymore. I really do okay until ragweed time.
Sadie is glad to wiggle for all to see 🙂

I hear you about the pollen and allergies … but I still love spring anyway, except through a thick mental haze caused by antihistamines.

The biggest thing I miss about the west is the night time sky. No city lights to compete. Sleeping in the desert with a whole sky full of stars is overwhelming. Of course nothing beats spring in the mid west. The sound of a lawn mower and the smell of fresh cut grass make me all nostalgic. I forgot about lilies of the valley. We had some growing on the side of the house in Brightwood. Thanks for the reminder.

All that green is BLINDING!!! I feel a little nauseous–out of jealousy, which is also green.

I have a new word: twitterpated. Thanks joey. I too, feeling a bit twitterpated, am looking forward to shorts and tee shirts, as well as warmer days, raining or not.

  11. How can it be “O” day already?? I know the joy you feel because I feel it, too, and I also love the seasons and rejoice in the coming of spring. I have to add, that you haven’t seen stars until you’ve been in the mountains of Wyoming or had a flat tire in the middle of the night in the middle of Minnesota on I-80. There are, as Dr. Seuss said, “Stars upon thars.”

    Happy spring!

I’m so glad you delight in it with me 🙂 It’s a beautiful time.
My starry skies were all southwestern in nature, but I know just what you mean. If The Mister were here to chime in, he’d tell us the stars are most beautiful from the middle of the Atlantic and I’d say, “God willing, I’ll never know.” 🙂

I love that deep green! We have some here on the Carolina coast but summertime puddle bra is something I could do without. It makes me crave the ocean.

Everything is so green where you are! We’re still so dry nothing much is green, just some trees, no grass so far. I love the stars, and the sunsets here, though. I mentioned trees, but still not enough here to block out the wide open sky. Enjoy your lovely springtime! 🙂

I get great visceral (as well as vicarious!) pleasure, from each of these love letters you write to the earth. To Home. I am so glad you were able to find one another again.

Also, that pic of the unfurling fern? Is luscious and so green as to be practically edible and I think I want to marry it.

Thank you so much 🙂 That means a lot to me.

You can eat the ferns, but I don’t, I just grow them for pretty. You can marry this, but you must live here, because they’re VERY finicky about location. 😉

  18. I love all the changing seasons, even the onset of winter. Doesn’t mean I won’t grow tired of it later, but the first bits of all of them are wonderful.
