How many languages do you you speak?
Um, I speak English, Sarcasm, and Profanity fluently. I speak French and Toddler proficiently. I speak Spanish poorly, and can only get into trouble in Italian. The latter two, I am much better at reading and eavesdropping. Honestly, you can only read so much without picking up some extra words and phrases in other languages. Like Latin. I didn’t take Latin. I sure know a hell of a lot of Latin for someone who never tried to learn. Of course, people don’t speak Latin anymore, they sorta declare Latin phrases to prove they’re learned, et qui bono? *wink*

What are you reading, watching, listening to, eating?
Nothing. Nothing at all.
I’m between books in a way that I hope one day I get to read a book. I’ve been watching Community at night, I’ve been listening to the soundtrack from Suicide Squad, and I’ve been eating food of course, mostly take-out, but not yet today.

What was the last photo you took with your phone?
Haha! Well, I never claimed to be good at photography.

Oops
Here’s the second one, which I think we can all agree is more interesting.

What is your favorite time of day?
I like the bed times. I love that part of the morning when my body is languid and my mind is still in the surreal. I love the part where I come home and sprawl across the bed with my family and pets. I love evenings when we all huddle up on the bed and talk about the important stuff. I love how we finally get to bed at night and my back gets scratched. Plus some other stuff involving bed. Bedtimes are decidedly my favorite.
I like the wee hours, too, but only if I can go to bed after the rush.
Man, I miss my bed RIGHT NOW.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?
I had a good week followed by a spectacular weekend.
Saturday The Mister drove me all the way to the south side to a shop I love. I got five beautiful new pots for my poor root-bound plants!  Max, for one, is grateful, as his color’s been off for some time now. Max is really big. I tried to photograph him, but it was super awkward, so this is what I decided on.

Also, one of the reasons I love that particular shop is because they sell Poppycock.
Things my MIL taught me #405: Shopping is so much better with Poppycock.
I shared. A little.

The Mister mowed the lawn, while Moo and I got the obligatory quintessential red geraniums. Moo planted herbs while I re-potted the houseplants and some begonias. Little weeding, little fussing. Stuck some succulents in a planter. I know, it sounds like chore-type stuff, but for a gardener, it’s dreamy.
I cut some peonies and set them on the table, and then we did the thing we’re best at — sitting on the porch and smiling at all the pretty. It was a beautiful day.

IMG_3244

Sunday, I woke to find coffee and a card that began, “A Love Letter to My Wife” — Whoa. The Mister cleared TWO garden beds in preparation for my tomatoes, sunflowers, and radishes.
I did not cook or clean all weekend.
I am ever so grateful my husband went above and beyond to give me a terrific weekend for Mother’s Day.
The girls were sweet too, but I have a feeling their sweetness had been ordained…

This week coming up is too busy for me. Field trips, early morning drop-offs, evening drop-offs, supervising culinary homework, handing out money like it’s cool, concerts, awards — on top of the regular work, cooking, laundry, errands — That’s the real May for moms! Heh. Just like December, full of wrapping-up and celebrating another semester’s progress. I can complain despite my pride, but really, it’s only ten more days til I turn off the weekday alarm, so I think I can manage!

Bwahahahaha!! I never thought of my proficiency in Sarcasm and Profanity as fluency in alternate languages but right you are! I shall embrace my multilingual talents with pride.

I’m glad you had such a wonderful weekend. I love poppycock! But we can find it in our grocery store, so it’s not as much a “special” find as it is for you.

Is Max a banana plant? I think my mom had a plant just like that, and it was HUGE.

Best opening line of a post ever. I’m not proficient in profanity, though my kids might think otherwise as I’m Queen Potty Mouth in our house but only because my husband NEVER swears and the children are minimalists when it comes to f-bombs. I like bedtime, too but you make is sound much better that I thought possible!

      Thank you!
Isn’t that funny? Swearing is relative I suppose. Buncha swearers, my family and me. The husband’s family, not. I think it’s the military component that makes my side swear so much, but I wouldn’t swear to it. 😉
      Bed is THE BEST.

  6. I greatly enjoyed this post, Joey. I speak English fluently and have worked hard at becoming much less fluent in Sarcasm. Whatever language you dabble in, there are always a few words and phrases that are essential. Besides “Where is the toilet?”, phrases may vary by country. “A beer, please” is good for Germany, “Croissant, jambon, and rouge” are useful in France, etc. “Please” and “thank you” are always appreciated, too. I only know/use a few simple words in Profanity and try hard never to use them. Sounds like you had a great weekend. I’m glad.

Well thank you! I find at the local German bakery, “Ein *points* bitte,” works great, same at the Mexican bakery, “Uno *points* por favor.” 😉

Sounds like another wonderful weekend! Your plants always look so nice, and going to the garden shop, well I want them all, but I don’t have a green thumb to even keep one alive for very long. I have a few on the kitchen window ledge that are still going good, though. Glad you enjoyed the weekend!

I love your description of the languages you speak! And your flowers are stunning.
I didn’t know you could eat poppycock – I thought it was just a term that meant nonsense!
Great that you had such a lovely Mother’s Day 🙂

Wow, that first photo you shared…I have that one too! I’m glad you had a wonderful weekend. The flowers and plants look like they had a good weekend too. Enjoy your busy week, and remember, if you don’t use a language, you tend to forget. I’d hate to see you not remember Sarcasm, and Profanity.

Well, yes, okay. Sure. (Was just writing on another blogger’s post about having named the pencil sharpener Herbert when I was a kid.) But why Max? Doesn’t a Max need to wear cool shades, or chew gum, or be able to SASS YOU BACK at the very least??!

Of course, it is also entirely possible that I am way overthinking standard plant-naming protocols here…

Sassy named him. She says he just looked like a Max. He doesn’t wear shades or chew gum, but he is a bit fussy…Secretly I call him Maxy. Shh.

PS: Herbert is a pear my friend sculpted for my MIL.

I agree about the dreaminess of puttering around in the garden with pots and plants and stuff. It’s so much fun. And I agree with you about knowing Latin. I didn’t take it in school, but majoring in English Literature I learned pieces of it because all those old English poets used it all the time. Makes me useful for decoding what’s on old tombstones, as if that’s a life skill that is great demand. 😉

I loved this, thanks for sharing your world Joey! 🙂
I used to have a houseplant named Max too, but he died – probably from neglect. I used to not have as much of a green thumb back in the day. Ah, your peonies are so lovely! Mine are just getting buds now. Sounds like you had such a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend. Mine was strained with family drama and dysfunction, but I enjoyed parts of it alright – especially having breakfast out on the patio alone with my daughter. ❤ I've been in gardening bliss lately too, aint it the best kind of 'chore'? 😉 Hope you're surviving your busy week – I actually miss busy Mays of the past… all the end of the school-year stuff.

I’m sorry your Mother’s Day weekend was not ideal, but brekkie on the patio DOES sound delightful!
      Gardening is the best!
And thank you ❤ Thank you so much!

Ha! You have major ability, Joey. I’m a little jealous 😉 Your gardening/yard day sounds fabulous. You are correct – that is never work, it’s always pleasurable. I was going to work on buying flowers and potting this weekend, but it looks like the weather may not cooperate.

Same here. I’m wondering what KIND of wet weather is headed in… Am I better off planting sunflower seeds before the rains or after? I will be watching. I hope you have a good weekend, with stuff to do indoors.
As you know, I was so glad to find pots with drainage. Sad we have to drive so far to get them! But then, Poppycock! 😛

  22. Your post really make me wish I loved gardening… I love the end result, but seem to kill most everything I plant. 🙂
We have SOL’s (state testing) this week so I have different kids going in late different days when they don’t have tests. Completely messes up my routine. lol.
