What goal are you working on now?
Haha, none. I live a simple, conscious life, no big agendas. I rarely set goals or deadlines or any of that. I’m supposed to live in the moment for better mental health and you won’t believe this, but I accomplish stuff anyway. I have a sorta mental checklist, but it’s dull: weed the garden, scour the tub, donate clothes, write letter to granny, get the car detailed, plant the beans… Then when I do the things, I give myself a mental treat like good job scouring that tub, you deserve a bubble bath! I respond well to positive reinforcement, and conveniently, I provide heaps of positive reinforcement.

What is one thing you’re glad you tried but would never do again?
Lordamercy, The Summer of Gin. There was once a bad, bad man who made me the most delicious lemon gin concoctions all summer and I’ll be damned if they didn’t give me terrible headaches. Gin does not like me. I do not drink gin. Gin is not my friend. Elderberry tea is my friend, so I dunno what that’s about.

Did you choose your profession or did it choose you?
I always wanted to be a teacher, and so I did that. I think some of us are born to teach, but not necessarily all of us in a traditional sense. Teach, yes. Deal with bureaucracy and play politics, fuck no.
I love what Laura wrote, “I’ve been choosing my professions since I left teaching. It’s worked out pretty well so far.” Big nod to that.

Have you ever gotten lost?
Yes, of course! I think the worst time was on my way from Indianapolis to our home in Georgia when I took State Road 16 instead of Highway 16. So many beautiful horse farms, but I wasn’t out lookin for em, now was I? That was before I used (or stupidly trusted) navigation. That was when I wrote tear-off directions in sharpie and taped them to my glove box.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?
My cup runneth over. I’m happy. Oh, so happy. And tired and sore. But happy. I’m grateful for this incredible weather. Today is the last day of the highs in the seventies, and it’s been utterly delightful. The skies have been spectacular.

This week coming up, I’m looking forward to Sunday, when this particular round of hoopla will be over and I can rest.

  1. My head hurts. I’m trying to learn Amazon ads so I can advertise my book, because otherwise it’s dead in the water. I may be getting there, or this may be one of those plateaus where you look up and the summit is still way up there (I think they call them ‘false summits’), but at least progress. After more work (great for brain, not so great for getting the next book written) than I ever imagined when I started this, some of it is starting to make sense (uh oh).

If things are starting to make sense, it may well be a false summit, but it’s all the more reason to keep you focused on the true apex. 🙂
I’m sorry you’re doin stuff that makes your head hurt.

I absolutely love that the thing you tried and won’t do again was “the Summer of Gin” – and not just a Gin drink. No one can say you didn’t conduct a fair test. You do these prompts very, very well.

  5. I’ve never tried Gin.
Your garden, and the skies look wonderful.

I like your Converse! I haven’t worn mine in ages. Think I’ll pull em out and wear them to walk to the pool for #1GS’s swimming lesson this morning. Think anyone will notice how the red doesn’t really go with my green and white stripped hoodie tunic? Um… thought about it a nano second…I don’t care. 🙂

Positive reinforcement is a key requirement for moving forward, for kids and adults alike. Glad to hear you give yourself some! But brace yourself–that high heat be a-coming. 😄

I was going to write about gin being my never again experience, but went with the other topic instead. The devil resides in gin. I like your awareness of living in the moment with fewer goals, more focus on now. I need to get to that point, too. Your photo of the blue sky with clouds is gorgeous. Wonder what it’d be like to live under a sky like that one every day?

Thank you! After reading of your sponge paint today, I thought of how I tried open cabinets for a spell, and found out I am just not into it, despite how I like it in other people’s homes.
No gin for you, either, huh? Interesting.

  8. Those skies look beautiful!
The hubby likes gin and tonic. I do not like gin. Our taxi driver in Scotland told us that he doesn’t drink whiskey because it made him want to fight. And that he couldn’t drink gin either because it made him cry. lol.

Yes. The weather has been wonderful. Sunny, cool and low humidity. That is what I am grateful for. As for getting lost? Do men ever admit it?

I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the weather! 🙂
My husband gets lost all the damn time, and he admits it. Maybe because it’s so frequent he can’t hide it.

  10. I completely agree with you about teaching / working in a school ( a job that requires much gin)–the bureaucracy and politics are draining. Bring on the weedy gardens and bathtubs that need scouring! 🙂
Enjoy this beautiful weather and rest of your week!

Oh, gin! I love gin, but it hates my head. The only way I can drink it is if I dilute it with a li’l Vermouth and sacrifice three noble olives by impaling them frough the hearts. And I can only drink one drink. More than one, and the pain would be less if I skipped the drink and beat myself in the head with the bottle.

Seriously? You know there’s truthy vodka available for vermouthing and oliving, too, yeah?
      And there’s rum. And bourbon.

Now I feel like I need to test the waters with gin. Vodka has been the worst for me in recent years in terms of headaches and hangovers. I’m getting a small bottle of the good stuff for this weekend, though, headaches be damned.

By far, rum is the nicest one to me, but vodka works out all right. So long as I’m with people who can stand the truth 😉 Good luck with the top shelf vodka!

  14. Thank you for the sunflower, I hope it grows big and strong. 🙂 The losing myself in car I caught by the tail, before my phone could internet. I’d memorised the way to amore’s workplace in Rome by way of Google Maps. I had viewed all the crossroads on my screen to get them right: right, 2x left, 3x right, left left. I couldn’t miss it. When almost there a friend said from the back of the car: “Oh, you’re good at this! We’re almost there.” That was the moment when it crumbled. And amore had to come and rescue us.

I am always getting lost as well, even with Sat Nav which often conspires against me! I hope your skies are beautiful again today! 🙂

  16. Lemon gin was a thing when I “came of age.” I cannot recall my opinion of the drink. That doesn’t mean I didn’t try it. It could mean that I tried it too much. Suffice to say, as an “adult” I do not drink gin.

I have to agree with Dan – you do “do” these SYW posts very, very well. Always thought provoking and this one in particular provided several additions to my “blog ideas” file.
