The Woman On The Bed

What did I do on the first day of fall break? I got up at 5:30am and drove the kid to the thing.
Then I hosted LindaGHill’s Saturday Stream of Consciousness.
Then I picked the kid up and grabbed some groceries.
(E, they closed our Aldi yesterday to complete the renovation. They had no chicken and I had to get that elsewhere.)
Then I made chicken salad.

Tasty!

Oh, but wasn’t yesterday delightful?
They said it would be 81 but it never got above 74. I opened the window to let the sound of rain into the bedroom and I read a book.

Gawwwd, that was a good book.

Moo made a comment about how every time she came in I was in a different position.
Well Yeah.
“I do that too,” she said.
Don’t we all?

Eventually, toward the end, I was sat up, hunched over the edge of the bed, giving Moo the palm “Not now!”
The Mister said, “Your mother really does love you.”
I do.
And that’s why I don’t read much in the mystery/suspense/thriller genre. I know how I do.

But I had the whole day without agenda and I’m still kinda giddy about it. Ate the yummy chicken salad, drank all the cuppas, took a hot bath, lay around readin and feelin lazy good.
More of that, please.

Cept, this morning came before dawn and I drove the kid to the thing. YES, EVEN DURING BREAK ONE MUST SPORT. Got a block from the school and she said, “Mama, let’s get on the interstate, say ‘That was a nice ride’ and go back to bed.”
Hahahaha! No.

Now, though, now I’m feelin like I could go back to bed… but it won’t be long and I’ll have to pick her up and GO TO THE GODDAMNED GROCERY STORE.

How was your weekend? Didja eat anything good? Did your husband bring you wine? Did your wife neglect your family for fiction?

Yesterday was wonderful. Open windows with a cool breeze and the smell of rain. Made a super rich chocolate cake to take to my son’s. Had ribs and rice and cake and vanilla ice cream with him the twins and one Grand daughter. Lord those boys will only sit to eat. Last night had beef with barley and mushrooms. Delicious. Will be better in the dead of winter with fresh baked bread. As my vision changes I am only able to read sitting up with a bright light source. Shame. I used to contort too. Today is misty and chill as well. Enjoy the break and enjoy the weather.

Glad you had a good one!
Sassy made brownies last night, I don’t know why we didn’t eat them a la mode — will do that tonight! Thanks!
At least the boys sit to eat! Our Moo wouldn’t even sit still for that until she was about 5!
I struggle in dimmer light now. A few years ago, I read with only the sunlight — that is not possible now. Glad that’s an aging thing, and not an I’m goin crazy thing!
      Barley is sorely underrated. ๐Ÿ™‚

My weekend was low-key. Tasty food = chili. Yes, husband brought home bottle of wine on Friday night for us to share. I read The Girls From Corona Del Mar [fiction] almost non-stop all weekend because it rained almost non-stop all weekend. Plus it’s good book.

  4. Chicken salad/rain/good book…what a perfect combo for your weekend ! I roasted a turkey breast, so damn the 80 degrees, and watched a lot of baseball/football. I’m trying so hard to “Fall”.

Oooh, does that mean you have dry turkey in the fridge? Yumma!
Sorry about the heat. I can’t believe how long these temps are lingering! Still 80s to come again this week! I want to “Fall” too!

      • Turkey was gone by Sunday night…fav is those cold sandwiches. We usually have full color on trees by now…still green. The color comes from my “summer” flowers in bloom. Pumpkins will have to wait !

I BET! I eat those dry turkey sammiches like its my job! ๐Ÿ™‚
I can’t keep pumpkins, as my squirrels believe they’re offerings. I’ve considered getting one of those big ceramic ones with the light inside. Got a bit of color in our trees, but still have to look for it.

There’s really nothing like getting caught up in a good book and holding it while ignoring all else. Good thing the house didn’t catch on fire.

I had a good weekend, even though it included a social thing. It was one of those social things you worry about but you’re glad you went, after you get there. It was hot here, though and humid as the south in summer.

I did cats. But, more importantly, did you finish that book? I want to vent about it, but not until you’re done for sure.

I did. Read it in about 6 hours. Vent away! I loved it!

You must be a weirdo like my new daughter. You were fooled? You were in suspense? I was so disappointed when I figured it all out mid-way through the book. Like a fool I kept reading (thinking I must be WRONG), but no such luck.

I started to get it when she got in the car and he offered her money. The repetitive patterns of his behavior were obvious to me. Even still, I loved the ending. Loved Anna twisting ๐Ÿ˜› That WAS a twist.
And do you know some people read for half a book before they put the names together in the police station interview?!?

My weekend was the polar opposite to your’s. While you were indulging in precious Joey-time, it was (is) Canadian Thanksgiving and it’s been pandemonium here since Friday. My youngest son just left a short while ago, the house is now amazingly quiet, and I’m contemplating all the things I plan not to do ๐Ÿ™‚

I spent my weekend with a few glasses of wine and Arrow season 1. Not exactly sure why I am getting to it after all these years. But it was raining all day and I needed something to keep me going for a long time. I also attempted my first pork recipe. It wasn’t a moment of pride…but I enjoyed every second of it. The beauty of cooking for just one person..you can keep eating even when the recipe fails.;-)

  12. Enjoying day three of our Thanksgiving – glorious weather – friends came up spur of the moment – out rock collecting (what else?) – I’m home, by choice – enjoying quiet time between the noisy bits.

I read your book and I had heard all sorts of good things… couldn’t get the same feels as others. To be honest, I am going through a “hard to please” phase book-reading-wise. A Man Called Ove highly hurrahed by blogger pals also left me feeling less than impressed. And I even cried near the beginning!

Enh. Whaddya gonna do? How about eat a chicken salad sammich?

I, too, have been recommended to read A Man Called Ove. Not sure I’m ready to add it to the TBR pile. I’m kinda moody with my reading.
I have a few friends who when they recommend a book, I just gotta, because always on the same page (no pun intended) but The Girl on the Train wasn’t a recommend, it was just $1 on the sidewalk sale.
I’m sooo glad you had a wonderful Thanksgiving ๐Ÿ™‚

Was that the book you were reading over the weekend? I read it awhile back, and I agree, so good, and hard to put down! Hope you have more relaxing days, and not too much groceries and sporting/driving. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, I read it Sunday ๐Ÿ™‚ Loved it, glad you liked it too!
It’s been pretty laid-back. A little gym, a bit of driving and cooking, got some kids comin over tonight — LOTS of downtime! The best part is The Mister will be home with us all day tomorrow!
Thank you and I hope you’re having a good week!

I had chicken salad on Saturday, but at the coffee shop rather than home. It’s yummy.
No bath for me, but I had a nice hot shower on Sunday morning, followed by a long bike ride with a friend on the most beautiful October 8th ever. Blue skies, low 70’s. Perfect. Then we went and had a tasty burger and watched the Packers beat the Cowboys. Awesome weekend.

I took a four day vacation this last weekend to NYC to see the Princess ( nickname for my one and only grown child) and read Joan Didion’s ‘ Play It As It Lays’ on the plane trip home. Read it to stretch myself…boy did it! Dark story.

NICE! ๐Ÿ™‚ So you had a good one, too!
I’ve only read maybe 2-3 of Didion’s books, and I think they’re all heavy, even when they’re not dark? I dunno, now you’ve piqued my interest. A good scattering of heavy and dark is okay, I can’t stay there long…

  18. He-Man hasn’t been a big fan of my reading a mystery who dun-it’s since…forevah! I get so involved I hate to be disturbed, bothered, or interrupted for anything.

Your day off sounds great to me. I was on the road for a large part of the day, but I did get to new house, did a little weeding, and pruning there, got the golf protective screens installed, and had Thai food, and a mocha coffee. Those were yummy splurges.

I hate going to the grocery store too.

  19. I love chicken salad….a reading a good book….and laziness! I’ve seen that movie, but haven’t read the book. I’m glad to hear that it was so good. Our weekend was filled with soccer and food. The girlie joined me in meditation on Saturday…Sunday the game was too early and she needed to sleep until the last minute. ๐Ÿ™‚

My heart goes out to you re: Aldi. All the things I need that I have to keep paying almost double for at Walmart, sigh.

We had a pretty good weekend. Went to a wedding, and it was a lot of fun aside from the Spanx. My husband bought me some rum drinks, too, yum.

  21. Your chicken salad looks delicious, and I always have a book at hand. Some are spellbinders and some are words. It is always a treat when it keeps you coming back to read just one more chapter. By the way – in case you don’t realize it, you look about twenty years younger than I think you are. Great genes, girl, and maybe you need to create a line of cosmetics and creams and become obscenely rich. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have trouble with products for skin, I have rocasea, so the only recommends I’d have are water, coconut oil, aloe vera … so sad. lol I appreciate the compliment though ๐Ÿ™‚

you are so correct about the reading positions and I never realized it – and for me – there is certain reading I have to do at the dining room table. Maybe it is a conditioning thing.
and side note – you depicted the wonderful beauty of how reading a good book can enrich our life – and more people need to listen up and – not always – but on some days – they need to make it happen. It actually allows us to give more later – cos we have to fill us too –

  23. It IS a good book, far better than the movie, don’t you think? When I read I still love my kids. But a good book…
And of course with the sound of the rain and cool weather: a dream.
