#ThursdayDoors — Liminality

Some time ago, writer and blogger Luanne introduced me to the idea of liminality, particularly liminal spaces. This captured my attention because as an introvert and a Highly Sensitive Person I feel liminal spaces are important. I like the quiet of a vestibule before the roar of a crowd. I like to stop a moment and breathe or at least slow my pace.

I took this door picture on account of the mirrored doors. One shot, multiple doors and reflections of even more doors.

This photo is metaphorical for me. I was in a liminal space, literally, but figuratively, in my head as well. I was trying to make a choice in those few quiet moments. As choices go, I had so many things to consider. I found it funny to be in the center of ten doors, the mirrored ones asking me, “What do YOU want, Joey?”

Moments later, in my car, yet another liminal space, I’d talk to my husband and he would ask me, “What do YOU want, Joey?”

I made the photo black and white, because while some aspects are, a lot of the pros and cons are unknown. I think of them as gray areas which can be colored in as I go.

I made the choice and crossed the threshold, and I am once again grateful for liminal space.

The photo is stunning. Black and white works so well with the reflections, including the reflections in Joey. I think it helps to convey your mood. Very nice post!

The photo is a perfect representation of the concept. I’ve seen the word liminal but didn’t know what it meant. Now that I do, as a fellow introvert, I like the concept very, very much.

  3. That is a perfect pic to do in B/W. And I, too, am grateful for all those provided liminal spaces.

I generally stop before doorways too. Gotta make space for the room ahead. 😉
    Nice pic.

What a nice post. Black and white just seems more intimate to me. Cozy. So thresholds should be shot in black and white. Thanks for the share.

I’m not normally a fan of b&w but it was the perfect choice here. A great photo for the concept and your musings.

I didn’t know about the expression liminal spaces, but I understood immediately that feeling you described when walking into a vestibule … the slowing of the pace and the deep breath before entering the noise of the crowd.
You added to my education today, Joey. Thanks 🙂

I never heard the word liminal before, but now that I know what it is, I need to pay attention to when these situations happen. I’ve been there, but didn’t give it much thought. Thanks! 🙂

  9. I really like this post, from the black and white photo to the thought that went with it. Great stuff.

I love this picture. How ever did you manage to get it without people around? I didn’t know the word liminal. Thanks for teaching me something new today.

On a literal, doors per square foot level, this post makes me go: Wheeeeee – so many doors!
And thanks to you I done went and learned me a new word today 😉
The decision to go B&W on this was a good one. It makes the image more of a mood shot, and this was a mood post.
    Nicely done 🙂

B&W was the perfect choice for that picture. I like liminal spaces, too. I usually have to brace myself and/or collect myself in order to be present in the moment, so taking a deep breath “in the wings”, as it were, is helpful.

I enjoyed your thoughts on this post very much (& the photo). Country-raised girl here would never be totally comfortable with that roar without an occational ‘pause’ first.

  17. I had never heard that word before either… but now love it. I’m going to place it right beside lacuna (alphabetically and both describing spaces) and take it out to play as often as I can.

I’m a big fan of b&w and your photo was a good use of it.

  18. The black and white photo is a beauty, Joey. I’ve never seen or heard the word liminal before; the space between what was and what will be. Wow, what an idea! Thanks for the post.

Ansel Adams – my first black and white love.
Your post is my first read on coming back home to my blog family.
I love that you speak fondly of your man – most I know hardly speak of them, and when they do, it’s not flattering.
And this post, how perfect it is for me. Work is kicking my butt, and I was asking myself just 24 hours ago, What do I want?
Thank you for your help…I’m getting there

      Well thank you.
Mine was also job-related. I hope you take the pause to discover what you want, Susan.
I speak ill of my man on occasion, too. He’s a wonderful husband, but he’s still a person with flaws and stuff, like everyone else, yet unlike me. 😉

This is very cool. I had not heard the phrase, liminal space, before, either. But I know and love them well. They seemed confusing or boring in the past. Now, I look forward to them.

Hi! I have been on a stupid self-imposed isolation because…..well, I do it from blogging too. I read positive quotes on Instagram even when I don’t feel like doing anything else and there are many days I give a psht to. Anyway, You always make me laugh and I should always stay current with blog reading. Now I have to go eat breakfast because all your food pictures made me hungry.

AW! Thanks, April 🙂 I do try to be up and when I’m down, I try to be funny, even if it’s dry.
I have (not here) been withdrawn since my father passed in July. I have started coming back around to my friends, but it’s awkward. It’s not like I can say, “Hey, I know I’ve been a ghost half the year, but I love you.” I had to be self-absorbed :/ Sometimes we need that space.
Sending you lots of love and light ❤ Thanks for coming by.

I read that about your dad. It stirred memories of the loss of my dad. When he died I started working through grief by knitting and looking for the good things in life. I can empathize with your loss and I’m so sorry. ❤

  22. I like to picture you surrounded by doors while arriving at a decision. The word liminal is not fully familiar. I know subliminal though. How badass liminal must be if its sub is so cool. 😀 As for colouring in grey areas, only now I’ve seen 50 Shades of Grey and I don’t understand what the hoopla was about. I was expecting all sorts of stuff, just not a film about some people who for some complicated reasons think they need to have other people sign contracts to justify doing some pretty horrible things to them. Because that makes it consensual. Sounds like pretty much every work contract everywhere.

I have just LMAO at the work contract. See also: contract work, lol! “How about instead of me writing 300 words of copy on your unnecessary egg cracker, you just stick this up my …. ?” LOL Thanks for the laughs!
Liminal is the space between, a threshold. Sub would be like underneath that space. Sub is deep yo.

such a rich post – has me pondering in a few ways (and curious about the choice.. but it was fun to not be told – it added to the enrichment and allowed us to feel the exploring of the content of liminal space more – and just ponder…)

  27. I had not heard the term liminality before. I looked it up and.. oh, what a great word… in all its uses. Thanks so much for introducing me to this term. I often find myself in that space during the journey of growth. The photo displays this concept so well and I agree that black and white enhance its depth. I wish you progress and peace as you color in those gray areas. 🙂
