SoCS — Now Serving Resolution, Take a Number

Resolutions are great. I enjoy resolutions. I don’t make New Year’s ones, though. My thoughts on New Years’ Resolutions are like, “Well if it’s such a good idea, shouldn’t you start now?”

*shrug*

This morning, at McDon’ts:

Bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits are two for two dollars, and since that’s what Sassy likes, I ordered the twofer. Y’all, I was in it for the Coke, you know how I do.
Anyway, we were standin there, with all the drinks made, waitin on the food.
Many people after us had been served.
Sassy, having swam 10,000 meters, no, that’s not an exaggeration, was just a wee bit peckish, and watching all the other people’s foods come up did not help her patience.
I was about to make inquiry on the whereabouts of our foods when the manager started a holler about the delay on the two bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits.

The counter staff got salty and contemptuous with the cook.
“Well I ain’t ate it, and it ain’t here, make more.”
“They came here for food, they’re not gonna go away, make it again!”
“You know she ain’t made it, I ain’t bagged it.”
“Just do your job!”

Manager arrived on the scene. “Still no bacon, egg, and cheese?”

“She said she made those already.”

Then Manager spoke directly to the cook, whose voice I never heard. All I could hear was the manager.

“I don’t care if you made them already. They’re not here.

“We need two. Now.

“Two more then. Now.

“Make them again.”

Cook said somethin else, then Manager took an expected route. She went sappy and apologetic, “I’m sorry the ones you made are not here. We don’t know what happened to them. You’ll need to make them again.”

I was thinkin about how this would go at other jobs.

“I already took her blood.”
“But it’s not at the lab.”
“Well, I already took it.”

“I already filed that motion.”
“But the court has no record of it.”
“Well, I already filed it.”

“I already put that fire out.”
“But it’s burning again.”
“Well, I already put it out.”

Can you imagine?!?

Eventually Manager yelled, “NEVER MIND, I’LL DO IT MYSELF!”

Within minutes, a smiley lady handed me the bag of foods and apologized for our wait.

On the way home, all I could think was how much of life is figuratively resolving to make two more bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits … And how much of life is NEVER MIND, I’LL DO IT MYSELF.

This is a great post. I look back on almost 40 years of managing folks and it includes a lot of “I’ll do it myself” – I do have to say, if I could swim 10,000 meters, I’d need more than a couple bacon egg and cheese biscuits. I might need a ham.

Wow. Pretty sure my husband would have had some choice words for that establishment. He does not handle those situations calmly. Glad you at least got an apology with your food. Happy New Year, Joey!

Oh my gosh, Joey! Yay for that manager, but imagine if life was really like this…’I already did that.’ Good luck with that, people. Happy New Year to you. Yeah, no resolutions here either.

  5. Great post, Joey. You are so right. I have also been there and ended up with, I will do it myself, to be sure, that it was done.

How about, “YOU’RE FIRED, YOU INSUBORDINATE, ARGUMENTATIVE COOK!”? Is the cook an undercover boss who isn’t doing a very good job of being incognito? It ain’t like it’s a fancy restaurant that depends on its chef’s reputation for attracting clientele. It ain’t someplace Frasier and Niles Crane would gloat about getting a table at. Geez. At least the manager had his eye on those McPucks and saw that you got them with a smile. I’d have given them to you free, if I had been the manager. Hmph!

I know! It was bizarre! I really was thinkin how insane that sounds, and wondering how old the cook was. It was a female, too. I was shocked at her insubordination. Fix the problem, cook the food, do your job! Gah!

Bacon, egg and cheese biscuits…. mmmmm….

    Unbelievable. Only at McDonalds.

So true. I have to watch myself, because too often I fall in the “NEVER MIND, I’LL DO IT MYSELF” camp. When it comes to kids, that’s not great, because they have to learn to do it themselves. So I sit back, bite my lip, and watch my sons do their chores without weighing in. Well…sometimes I weigh in with a comment or two. Because, you know, as a mother I can’t help myself…

So, I wonder how long the cook will keep his job and how many Excedrin the manager needed after that incident. Geesh.

If I still ate food from McD’s, that biscuit would sound a bit tasty.

I cannot fathom Cook will work there too long. No work ethic, no respect, no problem-solving — how you gonna keep a job like that?!?
The carbs at McDon’ts are by far the worstest in preservative weirdness, I do not like to consume them and I believe my body sees them for the evil they are. The eggs, I can do.

  12. There you have it… The binary. As for bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits, hm…. it’s been a long while since I was in McDon’ts. But bacon biscuit?? As in sweet? If not sweet, why call it biscuit?

    • joey says:

I will do my best to explain, as I know the biscuit issue is a serious one.
Biscuits in the US are not sweet and are not at all like cookies. They are made with flour, fat, and milk. They are puffier than scones, and are dense, but soft, crumbly. We eat them with all manner of things, as they are bland. Butter, honey, jam, preserves, gravy, are all good toppings for biscuits.
For breakfast, they’re as popular as toast. The biscuits in question, from this post, would be a biscuit cut in half, and made into a sandwich — this one filled with a scrambled egg, a slice of cheese, and some strips of bacon, then topped with the other half of the biscuit. I will now link you to biscuits of this sort.

      • Thank you so much for the thorough explanation. I clicked on the link too and thus messed up their algorithm (I thought it was spelled algorythm) something awful. I have never seen something like that on sale anywhere in Europe. (Well, haven’t been to many places.)

I discovered this early on with UK friends. Me: If your cookies are biscuits, what do you call actual biscuits? (Thinking it might be like chips and crisps)
They told me they had no idea these biscuits were a thing. I’d be interested in why we call them biscuits, since clearly English biscuits were a thing before American biscuits.

    That’s how I do too 🙂
I gave up I’LL DO IT MYSELF for Lent one year. Or was giving that up a former New Year’s Resolution. Circa 2014ish maybe 🙂
Awesome post. And flattery will get me everywhere right?
    Happy New Year Joey!

  14. But they made them once ? So…their job was done.. I agree that for hearing all of that, and the wait alone…should have comped you the biscuits. Chic fil A would have. Have to think about that ” Never mind” phrase. I don’t think I use it, but I do go behind folks and re-do. And they’re on to me.

Omg. Is it that hard to find good help in fast food? Maybe. My daughter works at a sandwich fast food place and cleans up after one of her coworkers who is plays on his phone a lot.

  19. Benson says:

The cook was just being a dick. That stuff happens in real kitchens some times. A ticket will go missing and some ( soon to be unemployed) cook will try to argue that he(she) already made it. That lasts just one “I already made it” and then it is over. If it goes on longer boss fires said cook and does it himself. At least Sassy got her nourishment. Happy New Year.

I don’t make New Year’s resolutions either, but I do love new beginnings and contemplating stuff I’d like to do/change/try/etc. when the new year rolls around. But I kinda do the same thing every Monday, so. This year New Years falls on a Monday, so it’s a twofer of things to do/change/try/etc. 😉
Happy New Year Joey! Best wishes and lots of love to you and yours in the coming year! ❤

I confess. i will mess with peeps. Especially idjits. I’m careful with handlers of things I put in my mouth (or other body parts), I tip well and ignore Mickey-D’s. Counter and window staff swipe each other’s orders to keep things moving and to mess with cookers. I’m glad to hear that it’s not just the old folks who think they already done that, but only intended, then got distracted.

  24. Kind of perfect timing that I would read this today. We stopped at a Hardees to get a biscuit, egg, bacon and cheese. The line was long, the wait was insufferable, and then I noticed a gentleman behind me holding a bag of food. One of the servers hollered out asking why he was back in line. He said ‘ you forgot the bacon on all five biscuits.’ I told him to go in front of me and then the man in front of me let him go in front of him. So, by the time he actually got to the front they had five more made for him. I’m not sure who is going to be working at our local fast food joints down the road because let’s face it no one wants to do that job anymore yet we all stand in line to get our food. Hmmm, maybe someone needs to look at that for the new year. 🙂 Have a great one, Joey.

I value fast food workers because when I do want those Cokes and sweet teas, and those eggs with hashbrowns, I really, really want them! My father used to say all jobs are important, that’s why they’re jobs. I feel the same.
A Very Happy New Year to you, too! 😀

That sounds like a very surreal experience! I worked there from ages 14 to 18. While I mostly cashiered, I can’t imagine saying…. I already did that…And to say it more than once!! Mind baffling. Glad Sassy got some food! I get a bit peckish when I’m hungry too. I had to leave a store that I was trying to purchase a present at in the days before Christmas because I could tell that I was going to become un-nice. I pulled into my driveway and realized I was starving. It was good that I left. lol.
Wishing you and your family a beautiful New Year’s Day!

  26. She swam 10km?? I can’t swim one! I’m surprised she didn’t want a Big Mac with a side order of Quarter Pounder.
I honestly still don’t understand how that cook got away with an attitude like that. I mean, McD jobs are hardly highly skilled. It would be easy enough to boot her out and get another cook, no?
Final trivia note: They’re called McMuffins here (cos they’re made with an English muffin). Biscuits are what you call cookies so a bacon egg and cheese biscuit….? Urgh.
