I woke early. I dunno. After some snuggle time in bed, I made some coffee, and poached eggs and toast for The Mister and me, then Moo and I went off to the Aldi.
I keep encountering people who feel the Aldi is dirty or weird or beneath them, and I don’t understand these people. They are, perhaps, as my mother would say, people with “more money than sense.”
When it comes to money, I’m a pragmatist. I’m all about home economics. I’m all about work economics, too, because bottom lines are right above pay raises.
It’s in my upbringing. All those lectures about value, man. I’ve seen my dad drive his golf cart 3 blocks away to give someone a nickel’s change. My mother would never dream of calling information when the phone book is RIGHT THERE.
My father? “I had to work three hours to buy that trampoline, so put the goddamn tarp on it when you’re done!”
Aldi is great. Do I buy everything there? Well, no. I do go there plenty, though. Some things I won’t or can’t buy at Aldi. Some things, I specifically go to Aldi to buy — like cheeses, cans of black olives, and spices. If you think you need to pay more for bananas, onions, raspberries, potatoes, or lettuce so they will taste better, I cannot help you. For everyone else, take some bags, take a quarter and go find out that Aldi is good enough for your bougie ass.
Don’t be surprised if you find yourself buyin things that aren’t on your list, feelin like the cat who got the cream.
There’s a lot of shit you have to live and learn about money, like don’t build on undeveloped land in Hamilton County, but Aldi is a no-brainer.
Today, Aldi had holiday candy on sale. While y’all may be too good to eat candy in red and green wrappers in January, we are not. I bought two bags of Reese’s cups, a bag of York Peppermint Patties, a box of candy canes, and two bags of M&Ms for under $5. How sweet is that?
Almost as sweet as the pineapple upside-down cake I’m bakin today.

Mom and dad loved Aldi when they were still living independently. I always drove them there on shopping day and mom swore they had the best produce. I drive by an Aldi every Sunday, but don’t shop there regularly. Been meaning to stop and go in and never make it. Perhaps because by Sunday, I have all of my shopping done at the other stores I frequent and I don’t want to spend anymore money.

Don’t know Aldi but it sounds like Costco, Target or Walmart. Very cute socks and they look nice and warm. Yum to pineapple upside down cake. Don’t tell my husband you make it for yours or I’ll have a standard I’d need to follow. 🙂

I don’t know what Aldi is, but to me the day-after candy sales, which happen all year after holidays, make so much sense. Same with halloween and christmas decorations etc.–or buying winter or summer clothing on sale in the off-season–just makes sense to me. Enjoy your loot!

We don’t have Aldi here, but it sounds like a Target…maybe. I’m glad I’ve somehow missed the after Christmas candy sales. We had quite a bit just from stockings, and #1 Grandson’s Willy Wonka themed Birthday Party. We’ve still got some of that candy left, but the mini Tootsie pops are goin fast.

Our Aldi arrived last year, it is very different than those “discounted because they are almost at their expiration date” kind of stores. It was a lovely surprise.
I’m laughing at your candy purchase, because I have a jar of peanut M&M’s that are red, white and blue from July 5th sale…still a few left. Red and green wraps surely don’t bother us !

Your socks are cute. Your Aldi experience reminds me of a previous coworker who wouldn’t buy veggies from farm stands. She would only buy fresh veggies from Whole Foods.

We don’t have an Aldi’s in Corydon, but there are some in Louisville and New Albany, and I know people who LOVE it. It creeped me out, the one time I went there, but I think that was just a poorly managed one that’s now under new management. My friend T love is because they have a lot of good gluten-free stuff and she’s gluten-intolerant. And I’m sorry — I have to say “Aldi’s” instead of Aldi. Everything belongs to somebody in the West End of Louisville. Sears is Sears’s, pronounced “Seerzes.”

I love, love, love the Aldi and shop there often. It’s one of my main grocery squeezes. When introduced to it, I thought it was a discount place for poor people, but when I found that my s-i-l in France, a huge foodie, shopped there, I investigated and was hooked. I have much better things to do with my money than spend it unnecessarily on fo od that’s either just the same or not as good. I read an article recently saying that Aldi is posed to be the next Whole Foods, although of course they’re not nearly as large. However, their quality is excellent, their prices are much, much better, and they’re NOT owned by Amazon!!

I’ve been to Aldi numerous times when I lived near one. I shop where I can get what I want at the best cost. I’ve been poor, and I mean poor. I don’t want to be poor again, hence I how I choose to spend my money as well. And, you know where those ‘bougie asses’ are – Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. 🙂

Never been to Aldi, but we just got one in the up and coming little township 15 miles south where a lot of retired people are moving to. Maybe I’ll stop in next time I’m out that way cause now I’m curious. Your parents sound a lot like mine were.

Aldi is one of my weekly groceries. That and Fresh Thyme and Kroger. However Kroger is starting to piss me off. I especially like their produce and dairy. Have you tried any of their beer or wine? Pretty good value.

No beer, but I’ve had plenty of the wines. They rotate a lot, though, so it’s hard when they change them up. I used to love a Riesling in a blue bottle (Wasn’t RELAX) and now they don’t carry it anymore. Haven’t had a bad wine there.
Why is Kroger pissin you off? I don’t love Kroger, but I do sometimes go there when I need somethin quick. I tend to choose Walgreens for uh-oh moments though.

Kroger has a bad habit of putting something on sale and not having it when I go. Their excuse is “it hasn’t been delivered yet”. If the shopper is there so should the merch. Also they never have the Friday freebie in the same place. It is like finding Waldo. Either give it up or don’t. If it is on my list it must be got. Besides their sales aren’t as keen as they have been.

If you have a Kroger card you will get an e mail telling you what it is. You down load it to your card and there you go. They have some amazing values. Of course you can only load on a Friday. You can use it any day and the deal will last a few weeks.

We have Lidl in our town which is pretty similar to Aldi. I remember when both of those shops started, people were really snobby about shopping there and saw them as rather ‘downmarket!’ Now, though, because their produce particularly fruit and veg is fresh and cheap, and they have won various awards for their meat, it has become more acceptable. As your and my mums like to say, ‘some people have more money than sense!’ 🙂

This is funny, since I was just bitching over this perception of Aldi to my husband yesterday. Saw some dumbass on FB talk about how only trashy people looking to save a nickel shop there and got all pissy. Aldi is just so wonderful…saving money aside, it’s so damn efficient, how could you not appreciate that?
