Down the way, there was a barbecue joint. It was terrible how we had to smell barbecue all day and all night for years. Just terrible. Seven in the mornin, droolin for pulled pork, Lawd. If I wanna eat a mammal, there’s a 100% chance I’d like to eat pulled pork. I’d put it right up there with MIL’s corned beef and sweet gravy. Lower than her corned beef and sweet gravy, but up there. At those kinda places, I never choose chicken or brisket or ribs. I ain’t orderin a hamburger or some fried catfish. Nope. Always, always the pulled pork.
I hated how inconsistent their mac n’ cheese was, though. I wanted to see the mac n’ cheese and know who made it… Sometimes it was heaven, creamy and peppery and sometimes it was just mac n’ cheese, meh.
Like the potato salad memes. If you don’t know, you should Google potato salad memes. That’s how I do at the reunions. Walk down the line with MIL all, “Who made these noodles? Whose beans are these? What did Aunt Bee make?” I don’t care about the meat, I want the siiiiiides!
Back to my story now — A new name appeared above the place down the way and I wondered if they reorganized, but no, is whole new joint. Oh they got pulled pork.
They also have all the sides.
This is a real problem for me.
I want all the sides, okay?
It is so hard, too hard, to decide on the sides. You only get two. I die.
They got mac n’ cheese and fried okra and green beans and cole slaw and hush puppies and greens and baked beans and y’all, I wanna eat all those things.
So we were in the car today and the radio was all, blah blah stuff “pulled pork sliders” blah blah and I told The Mister that’s what I need. See, I need a lil pulled pork slider and then all the sides. Yes, all the sides. Maybe three bites of each. If you open a barbecue joint, you do that? Maybe you even get more business by offerin people like me a sides entree. Like two big sides and four little sides. Lotsa greens and slaw, and then a lil of this and that and a hush puppy. Okay, two hush puppies. I could a la carte my way to a big check and tighter pants, I really could.

I think I just ate my way through the day (and made the pants tighter) without the ala carte thingie. Just being a piglet…blueberry pancakes, bacon, deep-fried walleye, cole slaw, sweet potato fries, raspberry lemon italian ice and a brand old fashioned. Good stuff!
Hope your Memorial Day weekend is starting out with a bang, some grillin’ and some yummy siiiiiides.

I’ve never had a pulled pork burger, or mac and cheese or fried okra or catfish, and I don’t know what a hush puppy is. You need to open one of these places for us in the U.K! But it all sounds delicious!

Hah! I wonder if anyone ever did try to make an authentic American bbq joint in the UK? It is all delicious. All of it! 🙂 We have them like you have fish n’ chip shops.

I like your idea a lot. I always have a hard time narrowing down to two sides. I also want a little of…
I almost always get brisket at the local place. It’s the best thing they make and it’s good. But the measure their sides – weigh them on a scale type measure – I want a scoop, not (n) grams of something.
And I want a hush puppies and they don’t have them 🙁
Pics look so good. It’s early but I could eat that Stuff (and hush puppies)

Good mercy. I don’t like that scale method at all. Hush puppies are life! lol

A topic I know a lot about – barbecue. I ‘always’ order the pulled pork sandwich too. My side favorites are house made potato chips and ‘good’ baked beans which means they have some molasses and some pulled pork. If I got a third choice, it would definitely be hush puppies. I like mac and cheese, but it’s not up at the top of my list so I’ll leave that to you to review. Now, you’ve got me drooling for good barbecue and those two words don’t mean much up here in NH. But, there is one food cart about 20 miles from here so now I’m thinking I may need a short road trip. 🙂

Ooh! I hope I did inspire you to fetch some bbq!
Good bbq was abundant in Georgia, I’ll say that much for it. We had a cart at the farmer’s market, “Sho Nuf” and I miss it. Nobody ever asked what was for dinner on farmer’s market night! 😉

I could not agree more. Pulled pork is only slightly different from joint to joint. Usually they are all good just some are better than others. Now the sides, that is a different story. They are the soul of the restaurant. That is why I like meats and threes. However around here all you find are meat and twos. I want that third side. I know what you mean about mac&cheese. I have given up on ordering it again. I would love to know the name of the new place. I think I know of the joint you speak of.

Meat and threes would be so much better!!!

Thinking: BBQ for breakfast? Hmm….that’s a maybe for sure. If you posted reviews of those places, they’d give ya all the sides ya wanted. We’re all hungry now.

I don’t think they can afford any giveaways right yet, but I do think I’ll talk to them about my side issue.

Folks (formerly Po’ Folks; they changed it before the 1996 Olympics so people from around the world wouldn’t think we were a bunch of rednecks–which of course, we are, but we don’t want them to think so) used to have a dinner where you chose four or five side items (I say “used to” because I don’t think they’re in business anymore).
I like the sides, too, and one of them has to be mac & cheese. My favorite barbecue place was the Texas Rib Ranch. They served pork, beef, ribs, chicken, turkey, and Polish sausage. The pork is always the highlight, though.
Gee, now I’m hungry…

I remember eating at Po’ Folks as a kid. I ordered a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with fries and a pickle and my aunt shamed me. Still to this day, I think there was nothing to be ashamed of, IT WAS ON THE MENU!
I do fondly remember their mason jar glasses though!
I don’t think they’re open anymore, either.
Your Texas Rib Ranch sounds good, too!

Oh, girl, I hear you all around my head! YES, pulled pork! YES, all the sides. Breaded mushrooms. Grilled zucchini. Lemmee taste the slaw and baked beans and macs & cheese, ’cause they could be NASTY. Some places WILL do you a sides plate. Some won’t. Worth asking.

Okay, I googled potato salad memes…pretty sure the Rachel Dolezal one is my favorite, I’ve got tears in my eyes. And yes, pulled pork is heavenly. There was a place close by that had the best pulled pork, didn’t even need sauce with it at all, but it closed. So sad.

Well ya know, I don’t eat mammal very often at all, so I think when I do eat mammal, I want it to be special 😛
Applesauce is a fab choice. Now that, I eat weekly at a minimum! 🙂

I am so glad I read this post after having BBQ’s ribs for dinner today! I get the chicken, ribs, or tritip when we go out for BBQ. I love the sides too! Baked beans, corn on the cob, and salad. Hush Puppies I’d buy on the side!
My mom likes pulled pork, but I never got into it like you or her have. 🙂 I like my pork in chunks with Chili Verde sauce El Burro’s way. They’re the sauce to beat en mon avis.
Before He-Man bought a gas grill we’d drive 40 minutes over the mountains to get our BBQ in Santa Cruz, CA. It’s good stuff there. Their sides are yummy, but they don’t have a green salad.

You’ve just reminded me it was National Burger Day yesterday and I forgot to eat one.
I am also a fan of sides except mashed potato and gravy from a certain takeaway joint. Urgh.
I had to google what hush puppies are. Here, it’s a shoe brand but I was pretty sure you weren’t ordering sensible and comfortable shoes with your pulled pork.

They are shoes here as well 🙂
If you have the opportunity to try an authentic stateside hush puppy, you must!

I totally could eat all the sides.
Once had an apartment, a wonderful first floor in a falling down around me Victorian, and Heinz had a tomato processing plant close by. The smell of catsup being cooked up, the smells permeating everything, kept me in a perpetual state of hunger and ever changing up jean sizes.
Your post prompted many foodie memories.
All my best to you dear Joey.

JoHanna, that’s funny! My first apartment was a few blocks west of a Del Monte Pickling plant. The smell was pungent and didn’t make hungry, but I’ve loved their pickles forevah! 🙂

I do like some pulled pork, but sides…mmm…
I got sidetracked looking at potato salad memes.
Now I’m back… I grew up southern, so my grandma made that from scratch for family BBQ’s. Even though I like some at restaurants, I’m not sure anything compares. I love a good mac & cheese, but if it’s just so-so, that is so disappointing. My mom is known for the baked beans. A little brown sugar, anyone? Cole slaw is the thing for me that seems to be all over the board. Nobody in the family made it (that I know of) but it tastes different at every restaurant and grocery store (publix even has two or three different types) and I have the hardest time picking out the version that I like (not too sweet, not to mayo-ey).
I think I’m gonna need my family to make me some sides when I head to Florida. Good thing it’s summertime. 😉

I never make slaw, but definitely like it on the spicy side, so I’m picky bout it. I make potato salad from scratch, too, just like Gramma used to make, and no, nothin compares, although I do like ALL potato salad, apparently.
Beans with brown sugar, mmhm. Yep.
Yes, get them to make you sides, it’s the least they can do when you visit! Hah!

I’ve been hearing about hush puppies on and off and soon a hunch formed that those were real quiet puppies and for a longest time I thought they were shoes. But it’s food? 😮 I know I could google it but I prefer to be enlightened by you. 😉

Thank you, Joey, I did! Now I know: They used to ‘feed it to their dogs to “hush the puppies” during cook-outs or fish-fries’. 😮 Wouldn’t mind to be a puppy to be hushed this way!
