As I mentioned, after thirteen years, our old red van died. Can we stop for a moment to honor her service? Thirteen years! One hundred twenty-seven thousand miles! Nine states! She toted four kids, two nephews, and all our many, many pets. She saw us through the car seats, the boosters, the far-flung French fries and Cheerios…
She carried everything from posterboard projects to a tiller, and everything too precious to put in a moving truck. She got us through two deployments — and the only non-standard replacement? Her air-conditioning compressor. Oh, she’s a good one.
I’m sure The Mister will bring Kia back to life eventually. It’s fun to tell your kid, as she sits in the van she helped destroy, “One day this will be yours!”
Sassy will have her very own hoopty to tool around in.

For us, no hoopties. New cars. Shiny, with weird new car smell and double digits on the odometers.
I got a white car thingy. Crossover thingy. CUV. It’s like a car, but it’s also like an SUV. It’s not a LOOK-OUT-I’M-COMIN-THROUGH-CAUSE-I’M-AN-ASSHOLE SUV, but more of a Mimom-Is-Trying-To-Mimom-With-Panache SUV.
This is my second white car.
Apparently, people who drive white cars are said to be neatniks who prefer to be direct and honest, who are reliable and often handle details.
I read that small women with larger than life personalities like to drive crossovers.
I also read that women in midlife, whose families are dwindling, choose crossovers and SUVs to avoid minivans, but still have room to tote kids and their crap. It wasn’t worded that way, but you know.
I don’t know if these things are true, but um… BINGO?
My criteria for car shopping? So mommer. Color – blue or white, certainly nothing that stands out. Smaller, but — I gotta make sure it can hold two teens, a dog, and a cello, as well as a pile of grocery bags. Then I gotta like the way it feels when I drive it. As with most things, I am not typical and care way too much about the placement and size of my cup holder. Go figure.
My new car is called Blanche.
The Mister got a black car. No thingy about it. He got a sleek, black sedan. He chose his car cause HME has that car and he drove it once and fell in love. I’d forgotten that, but when I asked him if he ever drove HME’s car, his enthusiastic response was, “Yes! I drove it to O’Hare!” I’m surprised he didn’t say, “On Monday, September 5, 2016,” and then tell a story about the weather and what the car wore.
Supposedly, people who drive black cars are perceived as strong and powerful with classic taste. They like to be in control and prefer clean lines. I’m not saying that’s him, it’s totally him but he does look at home in it. I honestly thought he might sleep in it the first night. He’d taken me to run errands and stayed in his car the entire time. When we got home, he looked so sad, be-beep, leaving his baby in the drive.
I asked him what he was gonna call his car and he was all, “My car.” He decided on Ebony though, because he lives with three females who wouldn’t let it lie.
It’s his first new car since 1991. It’s an event. It’s been a long time coming. You are thrilled for him, of course.

Congratulations on y’all’s 2 new cars! Sounds fab. We’ve only had one brand new one, a long time ago, and it was a red, 2 door Chevy Cavalier. Later, my daughter took it over. I’ve written in some post or other about a couple of weird cars we had…a jinx car, and a burnt orange van that when it rained, it rained inside. Right now, and for many years, we’ve just had our old blue pick-up truck, “Big Blue”, which only has crank up windows, and a cassette tape deck which we never use. haha! Happy Saturday! 🙂

Im currently driving a Crossfire T-6. Its the non-tricked out, indoor version. 😛 Its candy apple red cuz…well, RED. And flat matte black wasnt on the options list. Her name is Betsy. I name all my chairs Betsy. Its just a thing. It Just Seems Appropriate.. Lol

Congrats on the new cars! We once bought a used Dodge Journey because I am in love with the band. Worst.car.decision. Our favorites are Hondas and we leased a white CRV for me three years ago (because of the whole mom doesn’t need a minivan anymore but dad needs a car that will hold his golf clubs thing). First time leasing and now the lease will be up in a few months and we’re trying to decide whether to keep it or trade it in for a new one. Her name is Moonglow 🙂

New cars are so exciting! Congratulations on yours. My husband and I didn’t buy new cars on the same day, but we did buy them two days apart (read that story: https://cordeliasmomstill.com/2014/05/15/evil-car/ ) Then, of course, since they were both leases, we wind up both getting new cars within a few days of each other every three years or so. Currently, I’m driving a Ford Escape (yes, even though I was the person who said I would never, ever become an SUV driving mommy), and hubby loves his Ford Fusion (he has always preferred sedans). My current car is white gold, his is blue something-or-other. It’s nice to have one vehicle with a cargo area and a lift gate for toting those home improvement and garden supplies, and to have a second vehicle that looks especially nice when going out to dinner. Works out well for us. I hope you get as much joy out of your new cars.

Ha, no, that doesn’t sound like me at all. But it was a Prius so maybe that negates it a bit. 😄 Teen son drives the 12-year-old Prius now. Poor kid will have issues for life.

Congrats and have a cold drink. That car shopping is not for the faint of heart. My last car was a white Honda Odyssey Van, and I LOVED everything about it. For several years and 100,000+ miles, it toted two grandparents and two grandkids all over. It needed some repair and the grandkids have long stopped riding with us, so it was time to replace it. We bought a Cadillac SRS with all the safety bells and whistles, it drives great, but I don’t have a place to put my purse, and the cup holders are too close together. It won’t be here for the long run because I’ll be shopping for better cup holders and a place to put my purse. I’m not fussy about colors as long as it isn’t too bright and obnoxious. I hate car shopping because it becomes overwhelming to the point you can’t even remember what you’ve looked at and what you haven’t. Again, congrats that it is over.

A Cadillac is a clear choice for holding its own in terms of durability and resale, so nothing official to complain about, but I get you. This cup holder thing is incredibly important to me. I got a drinkin problem and short arms, hook a sista up! lol 😛

Two new cars! Dang, Joey! Many, many moons ago I had a red station wagon. Could park in any store parking lot in town and someone would walk in the store, find me, and say, “I saw your car in the parking lot…..” Such a small town. Last two cars have been silver. Lotta people drive silver… 🙂

Silver IS incredibly popular right now, and it looks so much better on some cars than others, when they get that chrome detail gleamin, and the wheels are done right… Yeah, silver can be SO SWANKY!

Yay and yay for TWO new cars. In my youth, even one new car was a HUGE event. When I started to drive, first I inherited dad’s old cars, two: first a blue Renault (too long, I kept hitting it front and back when parking), then a white Peugeot (new make, not a cool old one). I bought my first car with my ex-ex, an old old dark green Peugeot 404, then I bought myself an old old light yellow Peugeot 504 with which I drove around Crete for a month. Then my ex came with his tiny white Citroen AX that was not very good at going uphill. This lasted until my uncle sold me his Ford Escort. The best thing about it was its colour: belladonna! Then I left Slovenia to join amore with his own dark (grey? mostly it’s too dirty to tell) Ford. And father bought my (uncle’s) Ford that is now falling apart and has holes from the salt. So you see: someone who buys TWO new cars at once is in my eyes a VERY VERY lucky person. 😀 I wish you all much joy with them and happy trails.

Thank you! I do feel incredibly fortunate. For 2006-2015, that old red van was our ONLY vehicle, and that provided financial relief, but also came with complications. Fortunately, seven years of that time we lived on an Army base, where most essential places were close, so a lot of me dropping The Mister at work at 5:30 and then running everyone everywhere and then picking everyone back up. Phew. I do not miss that.
Having bought my new car in 2015 was a HUGE event for me. Simply having two cars has made all the other things possible.
He’s driven that van for three years and was determined to keep saving money as long as he could. Always a concern that he’d break down somewhere — and he finally did.
Having two new cars feels lucky indeed! It feels like a “Finally!” moment for both of us. Two reliable vehicles.

Peugeots are not common here. I dated a guy who had one, in high school, it kept runnin, but also unreliably. It was old when he had it.
We don’t have the kind of mass transit y’all have overseas. Cars are seriously important here. Buses are unreliable and we have no commuter trains in Indy. We don’t even have proper sidewalks in much of it. Not having your own car can eliminate a fair amount of jobs, as not everyone will hire a bus rider. There are many people whose livelihoods depend on their car running — if they can’t fix their car, they’ll lose everything. We are a car-dependent nation overall. There are cities where it’s less of a factor, but that’s not typical.

Oh, yes, I’ve seen that in Los Angeles. Nobody walks and sidewalks don’t happen just like that. (And when they do, they have stars on them and iffy technical stores next to them.) Belladonna was indeed purplish. I don’t recall any photo of it where the colour is obvious. Father still has it so I can take some in the summer. I’m happy that you have been car-ed for. 🙂

Good for you guys. Each with a new ride. I like the idea of giving child the car she abused. Won’t matter #myCar. I drove a red vehicle for 24 years. Now silver-ish. Not the happiest. I’m hoping to move on later this year. Maybe red.

I’m driving the a pretty navy blue SUV (small) because I have to be able to put my bike in the back and haul stuff around. I don’t know how I got along with my former Olds Alero (dark blue) (there’s a color theme going on here) with not much room in the trunk. The other color I gravitate toward is gun metal gray, but only if it’s a cool gun metal gray.
I had a small Chevy once that ended up being the ex’s when he worked at the junk yard. He turned it into a filthy, smelly thing that I was embarrassed to drive. I think that’s when I got the Alero.
Anyhow, Joey, congrats to you and the Mister for the two new vehicles. You both must be so excited and thinking about cruising around on Sunday. Have fun!

Dark blue is my preferred color for most cars. It’s a thing. I get it. So much depends on the model. A muscle car can be a lot of things a sedan cannot. Mmmhm. Some cars just pull off a color better than others. The best gunmetal gray car is Maserati, LOL, but that’s just my opinion. 😉
I can totally see you in an Alero 🙂 Of course, an SUV is a better choice for a cyclist! Now that I think about it, I really think I see you as a woman who drives a sports car. And not a typical sports car, but somethin cool and retro, like a lil convertible, maybe a Cobra. Those come in gunmetal gray, too…

Great. Two new cars. Good for you. I think Blanche is an excellent name for a car. Especially a white car. I think I like Jason’s idea of My Car but Ebony is logical and I totally understand why he changed. Enjoy your new rides. My first Hoopty was a 57 Chrysler with gigantic fins. It had a huge back seat, which was important to a teenager. It also was 2 toned green. I don’t think they make 2 toned cars any more.

My favorite car was my 1975 yellow VW Super Beetle. Many, many miles over 100,00 and it had gone all over the US on all sort of roads. Now I drive my second Toyota Sienna and I love it. I love having room to put things and it handles beautifully. Also goes up the unimproved Wyoming road to the cabin just fine, which is maybe the most important. 🙂 Our first Sienna was light silver, this one is grey. I think that the grey was that year’s silver in that everyone seems to have it. The VW was Sundance. The Sienna doesn’t have a name.

I think I see way more red Siennas here than gray, so maybe that’s a popular regional choice. The grays have it when it comes to design lately, don’t they? I’m glad she takes you to Wyoming without incident! Definitely an important factor!

How exciting for you both! I’m more into cars than He-Man is. For him it’s just about a ride that will get him from A to B reliably. Me, I want some style and personality.
Our first brand new car was a Datsun pick up truck. Littl’ Red I called it. We have some great memories with that truck. We bought a new White Toyota pickup to replace that one. Then we bought my Honda accord 5 speed manual transmission in charcoal gray. I loved that car, but when I had Baby Girl, and was also watching my niece who is just 7 months older than Baby Girl, and Big Baby boy playing ball, and hauling all that gear, well, I gave in bought a new mini van, but it was a 5 speed manual transmission! She was charcoal gray too. I cried when we sold my Accord. That was” my” first brand new car.
That mini van was a good ole van. She served me proud, but I was ready to sell her and bought Little Car. A white Toyota Corolla. Big Baby Boy bought the white Toyota pick up truck from us when he was 16, and He-Man said he was done with trucks for awhile and bought himself a Honda CRV. It was sky blue. I think that was the first car he really, really liked. Baby Girl bought my Little Car when she was 17. We didn’t want the kids to feel entitled or spoiled so made them buy their own first car, and pay for gas, insurance and stuff. The way the timing worked out for us to get new cars at the time each of the kids was looking a car worked out well.
I bought Va-Va: my Toyota Corolla Sport in Charcoal Gray. 5 speed manual transmission. She can go. We still have her. She only has 60k miles on her and we bought her brand new in 2007.
When I started going off road to find the photo it was time for 4 wheel drive, ( there’s a story there, but won’t get sidetracked) ,but I ended up getting a Subaru Forester. She’s white, and I call her Pearl. She’s 4 now, and I’m really happy to have her. The cup holders are great, and the seat warmers are even better, and she can go on dirt roads.
Her cargo hold could be bigger, but seat warmers, and dirt roads! 😊

I’m a car person, too. Not something people suspect about me, but it’s true. I used to know nothing about cars, but then I dated a guy who was a serious enthusiast and I learned to drive in American sports cars and fancy imports and it stuck.
It’s interesting how much our lifestyle affects our car choices. The Mister was military and drove our old red van, and most of the guys in his company drove trucks or muscle cars — or rode bikes, and they’d try to tease him, but he’d just be like, “I have FOUR KIDS.” LOL For me, there was a moment when I was like, “OMG, I’m in my red minivan, driving a kid to soccer. I’m a soccer mommy!” Brief panic, but then, well, shouldn’t kids get to soccer in a practical, safe vehicle? LOL It doesn’t last forever, and our vehicles change as needed. So many people here, writing about what they tote and roads they travel – it’s great there’s variety to accommodate.
I am seriously curious about Suburus, have never driven one. My cousin had one for what seems like 20 years. He drove it before he had kids, and was still driving it when they left home!
Pearl is a fab name. Almost named Sassy Pearl. Was The Mister’s favorite grandmother’s name. Sassy could never be a Pearl though.
Blanche is American, so I just say it regular 🙂 I feel like Blanche could offer more cargo space, too, but then I also think it’s good to have limits. (Says she who lives in a bungalow.)
I am laughing at your love of seat warmers. I cannot help it. It’s like how Canadians laugh when we close school due to the snow. Imma use my response in a One-Liner Wednesday post. All in good fun. Temperature is relative 🙂

I tried an Outback when I shopping for a new car to replace Little Car. The clutch was so stiff, and it drove like a truck. I wanted something that drove like sedan with a clutch to gas ratio that was a smooth as Buttah! That’s how I ended up with Va-Va the sportier Corolla.
I’ve been suggesting we sell her, and buy another Subaru. He-Man drives her the most now, and he says we’re keeping her till…forever. 😊

WOW! Two new cars! Congratulations! I just got my first ever NEW car in November. It’s a crossover SUV thingy. But I’m not a small woman and if my personality is larger than life, it’s a SECRET cause most people say I’m calm since they can’t read my mind. I chose silver because snipers would have a hard time seeing silver. (Maybe that qualifies as a secretly larger than life personality.) I never told anyone that before except my husband. He said it would make it hard for other people to see it too. His point was reinforced when a guy ran a red light and hit my first new car a couple months ago. Anyway, I’m glad it wasn’t totalled. I still like my new car and still getting used to the back up camera and the ding ding ding when I get to too close or want to change lanes and someone is there. I tell her, Ok, Ok. I see it. Thank you. I should think up a name for her.

My sky blue Cruze is seven years old. Using Mister math, I have seven years to go before deciding on my next model. Lie. I’m already eyeing the roads and TV commercials. Small SUVs/Crossovers are catching my eye. Gotta drive like a car, but at last give me the all-wheel drive I should have had a long time ago for the winters we get around here. Darker blue, I’m thinking.

I got a Trax. When you go, you should drive one — cause drives like a car, absolutely. I had planned to get another Cruze, but I preferred the Trax. Do check it out, and it comes in dark blue, too! But… I don’t think FWD. Maybe the Equinox, which to me, is very big and not like a car. I dunno. Lemme know when you do 🙂

Wossa hoopty? Wossa HME? I drive a black NIssan Versa named The GothMobile. I bought it because it was short enough to fit in the basement garage, big enough to carry books to conventions to sell, and the one they had for sale was black.

A hoopty is an old car, not a restored old car, but a dilapidated car. The kind someone gives you, or that you buy outright with the money you earned fryin chicken at the fair or whatever.
Versas are cute! I likey! I never realized the GothMobile was a Versa!
An HME is a person, a dear friend to Joeys.

How fabulous! I love cars. I have car envy. We have a horrible, embarrassing little car, that we only drive because someone gave it to us for free. It’s a Skoda. The butt of many car jokes. It’s getting on a bit now, my husband treats it like a rubbish cart and loads it up with everything. Every time I drive it, I pray it won’t break down. Or maybe it should, then we can have something better. It’s silver coloured.

I have had car envy OFTEN, so I feel for you. It’s a pity your husband doesn’t treat the sad silver Skoda as he should.
The Mister drove that old red van long and was always afraid he’d get stranded somewhere, and eventually he did. Car payments are awful, but a little less awful than being terrified of breaking down, if you can afford a choice. Choice hasn’t always been a factor for us.

Yay!! Congratulations on the new cars!! My Jeep is white. I’ve always wanted a white Jeep and had visions of Lara Croft Tomb Raider, but I didn’t go with a Rubicon. They have more play in the steering while on the road and I wasn’t going to be doing lots of off-roading. Her name is Lola.
My first car was a 4 speed red Camaro. Later it had issues where a piece in the shifter would break. The first time, I thought I had lost all my gears. We learned that only 3rd and 4th were broke, so when it happened again, I could throw it into second until I could get off of the road. I wasn’t sad when I moved past that one (a light green metallic 1967 mustang, automatic, with a smashed rear end).

AAAAHHHH! Congrats on the cars! I drive a 2000 4Runner, which up until recently was named “Silver.” Now we call her “Puff,” since my head gasket is leaking and it smokes alarmingly sometimes. My husband drives “the rustbucket,” a 2002 Cavalier that, despite its name, cannot rust as it is comprised almost totally of plastic. We need some new wheels like yesterday….

First of all, congratulations on your two cars. Generally, boys and men are crazy about cars and bikes but I don’t fall into that category. Yes, I love vintage cars and bikes, but that’s it. I don’t love riding or driving it. Maybe because I’m lazy, maybe because I’m an environment-concerned person, or maybe because I have never got the opportunity to get into one ever in my childhood days. I’m into public transport so you usually see me writing about trains.

Well I am certainly a car person, but I would advocate and use public transit if we had any of a reliable nature. Not all cities are so blessed with trains!

Yeah, I completely understand that. Even in India, Mumbai is probably the only city that has a good railway system. It carries 7.5 million commuters daily that’s entire population of Hong Kong.

I drive a white sedan coupe. Very snazzy, nothing too practical about it except the gas mileage. Z-D drives a black 4-door sedan. Very sedate, slightly menacing. Make of us what you will.

I rarely drive the Beastess anymore, but she is still working good. We typically take my fiance’s vehicle, which has more miles but is newer, smoother, and has working AC. I drive the Beastess as backup, or just to go somewhere alone. She is running great, just got her a new battery.

Congrats on the car! My car is a turquoise color. I bought it because they didn’t have white, and lord knows that one shouldn’t exercise patience when making a $30K+ purchase. (It is my favorite color for clothing/accessories, but I’ve always gone with white when I was buying new before.)

I'm picky about turquoises. I wear it often enough, and paint rooms in it, but am picky. White is VERY typical for me.
Have you seen any of the cars that are so blue dark teal they're almost navy teal? I don't know what to call it. It's a great color on some models. Next time, be patient 😉

I know what you mean. My husband was *not* happy with me earlier this year when I told him we had to repaint the bathroom that he’d just half painted. The turquoise shade I had picked out ended up looking way too bright. The current shade is slightly darker than what I want, but I’m staying quiet for now.
I googled…nice, reminds me of what you’d see on classic cars.
