Food Q&A

Barb shared a Food Q&A and I’m playin along. I like this sorta thing.

oUUDs0e

Do you enjoy food from countries that are not your own?
Yes, I am American. If it’s not beans, corn, or squash, it probably didn’t originate here.

2. When you prepare salad for yourself, do you rip your greens (lettuce, spinach, &c…), or do you cut them?
I rip em.

3. There’s a saying that goes: “Life is short, eat dessert first.”  What do you think of that advice?
That’s solid advice. Especially when dinner’s an hour from done.

IMG_3504

4. Have you ever thrown spaghetti against the wall to test for doneness? — If it sticks, it’s done (so they say) — What other such kitchen habits might you have?
Yes, that is the way. When it’s really busy around here, sometimes the spaghetti hangs on, like that one dead spider in the bathroom corner.

5. How often do you eat fish?
As much as possible.

6. When purchasing food for yourself, do you check the nutritional label? If so, what are you checking for?
No, I don’t much look at the nutrition label, but I look at ingredients. I have to check everything for red dyes. It’s not as simple as you think: red dye hides in shit like green spinach wraps. No lie.

7. How often do you eat salad as a meal?
Usually once a week, usually Monday.

8. Do you have any food quirks? For example: do you arrange a particular food in a certain way before eating? Or eat certain foods in a particular way every time? (i.e.: bite the heads off of gummy bears)
Yes, of course. I am persnickety. Yes. It’s important that the cheese does not touch the mayo. The preserves do not get spread atop the peanut butter. The sugar goes on after the milk. The cream goes in before the coffee. We don’t have time for the entire list.

9. When boiling water for pasta or whatnot, what are your “tricks” for keeping the water from boiling over?
Sometimes a wooden spoon will do the trick. Usually a bigger pot is a better idea.

10. Are there any recipes that have been passed down through the generations in your family? Have you passed them to anyone outside of your family? or are they a closely guarded secret?
I share a lot of recipes (Not Here) but a few are sacred, because people fuck shit up and then they carry their bowl of fucked up shit out into a crowd and say, “I made Joey’s —-” and I cannot even with that. Don’t disgrace my grandmother like that. A pox on your goat.

11. In general, how do you feel about “diet” foods? Meaning: foods with artificial sweeteners or alternative fats in them. For example: Diet soda or low fat muffins.
Diet soda is surely my friend, but a friend I can only visit with once a day, for she will give me migraines. Otherwise, I avoid the fake stuff. Do you know what they take out with the bad stuff? Do you know what bad stuff they add to the good stuff? Why the hell would I want a low fat muffin?!?

12. Have you purchased food online? What do you think about that idea?
I have. I order quite a bit online. Sometimes when we’re ultra lazy on a Sunday, we’ll even order perishables and have them delivered so we can cook what we like. It’s wonderful.

13. When cooking for you and yours, what kinds of experiments have you tried?
I don’t think of cooking as an experiment. Moo made slime in the kitchen, does that count? Oh, I once boiled red cabbage!

14. Do you now, or have you ever, grown or raised any of the food you eat?
Yes. It is good. Do that. Garden tomatoes and fresh herbs, mmm!

tomatoes

15. Are you a vegetarian? If not, has the idea of becoming one ever crossed your mind?
I was a vegetarian from like 1995 to 2002. I ate no land animals and I still don’t eat much in that category. My body likes fish and eggs and dairy, but it doesn’t like meat so much. When I do eat meat, I generally eat toddler size portions. My dog loves me.

16. When arranging the food on your plate, does everything have to be separated, or is it okay for your food to touch?
It doesn’t matter. It can touch. Some of it should touch.

17. When eating out, what foods on the menu might push you out of your comfort zone? (for example: pineapple on pizza makes some people twitch)

FTYSPCi
I do not have this, although corn in a cup did incite my rage. I don’t want pineapple on my pizza, but I’ve had it and it’s not awful. You know those lists about picky eaters? I eat all the things. The thing on the list I like the least? Nutella. Still, I’ll eat it.
Lettuse, y’all.

18. Do you have a sweet tooth? If so, what kinds of foods generally satisfy the craving?
Ice cream is my thing. Gummi Bears. Orange slices. Tootsie Rolls. I prefer to drink my sweets. I have a soda addiction. It has been 2 days since my last drink.

giphy

19. What foods (if any) do you like to mix that other people might find strange?
Like I care. I like a plate of foods, like cheese and olives with a cuppa coffee. Or a plate with boiled eggs, figs, and walnuts. Some people think it’s odd. I just like to eat what I like.

6a0112796f38d028a401b8d0bbf1f7970c

20. When eating out, at what kind of restaurant do you prefer to dine?
Seafood. But let’s be honest, if I’m not planning the menu, shopping for it, cooking it, or cleaning up after it, I’m pleased. Unless I cook it better. I hate that.

21. In general, how do you feel about organic food?
I feel good about it, but not all organic is equal and not all organic is worth the price. Pick your battles. Grow what you can.

12670813_10153383882356583_4344076984396143815_n

22. What foods (if any) do you eat when you are happy or unhappy?
Ice cream is the answer. Ice cream is magical food, delicious in both joy and sorrow.

You’ve got some good answers here. When you talk about the bad stuff they put in when taking the good stuff out, check the sodium content on a low fat muffin, and you won’t want it even more. More won’t…I’m not sure I did that right.

I only counted five things on the picky eaters test that I won’t eat, but one is one of your favs (olives).

  2. I can tell you are in a good mood so Friday is going to be an easy one for you. Love the three sisters reference. And, never in my entire life have I thrown spaghetti at the wall, and I’m not thinking about trying it now because I’d be the one cleaning the wall. 🙂 We went out for ice cream this week. We ordered two small dishes for a whopping $8.50. Sometimes, well most times, I find the cost of enjoying ice cream out and about ridiculous.

I know. It’s $20 for a family of four at Culver’s or DQ. It’s more like $35 at Baskin Robins and Coldstone. I don’t know what happened, but I can’t be gouged like that.
I was in a pretty good mood, then it faded and I was grumpy, and then I was draggin, and then GREAT THINGS HAPPENED, so that’s nice.
Eventually, the spaghetti falls down and the dog eats it, but I don’t blame you for not throwin it at the wall 😉

Well this was fun. As I expected we have some similar tastes and views when it comes to food. You’ve inspired me to give this one a try myself probably sometime over the weekend.
    Happy Friday!

  4. We’re all different. I’m a carnivore. But I had a cast-iron stomach until earlier this year, and I don’t know why it’s so persnickety now (stress sounds like the right answer).

The amount of food I eat has dropped precipitously – and my weight not a gram.

At the retirement community they have vegetables and fruit (even some low carb fruit!) all the time, prepared by someone else. When we visited, I ate all that. I will continue to do so. SO easy.

There must be different body types, because anything beyond a touch of vinegar sets my teeth on edge, but I love broccoli. And fish is the natural food of other fish. Period. Though put me near shrimp (NOT cold), and I forget my reservations.

Can’t stand the smell of coffee (close to divorce over it several times) or cooking fish. My mother loved fish, but didn’t like the smell of it cooking. Her solution: eat it at restaurants. I never learned to eat it (except a bit of very white stuffed flounder. And crab, carefully, occasionally), and hated when she offered me bits.

My grandmother forced me to eat a tomato when I was a kid. I hate them still. But eat cooked tomato products (as long as no obvious skin and seeds and pulp).

Too long a topic. We could go on for hours. Days.

It’s true, we are all different. I love to read about people’s relationships with food. It tells you a lot about a person 🙂
My husband has a cast iron stomach, and I have long envied him. He DID, for about 4 months, have some tummy troubles, and it WAS stress. New job, no tummy troubles. I hope your stressor passes quickly and you get your iron clad stomach back!
I am so glad you’ll have someone cuttin up good for you stuffs. Not doing food prep, while still eating the good food, will be a blessing to your energy! 🙂

    Yummy. Now I’m starving. 😁

I love that you eat so much seafood. I’ve always had a strong aversion to it–both the smell and the taste (which I’ve actually read can be genetic; wish I would have saved that study I found long ago). But it’s so good for us. I’m definitely missing out there.

You picked some great pics to go with your answers. The two about pineapple and the lab made me snort. Actually I will eat most anything. For some reason some folks retch when I have my pizza with anchovy, sweet onion and black olive. Sorta like a tapenade pie.

Thanks! See, I would eat that pizza! One of our friends, when we order pizza together, will do the anchovy olive with me.Then the other people can eat meat lover’s or whatever 🙂

Coconut and brussels sprouts are the things on the picky eater list that I won’t eat. Bell peppers are not my favorite thing and I usually pick them off but I have eaten them. I’ve had tofu noodles a lot but not the big chunks. The hubby does not like eggplant so I’ve never tried it. FYI whoever made the list, I think it is lettuce with a C not an S (just to show I really read the list). LOL about sharing family recipes. I never thought about that but it is so true. I agree with Judy about throwing spaghetti on the wall to test for doneness. Not adding to my cleaning schedule with that one. Thanks for sharing these! Have a spectacular Friday.

You’re not too picky at all 🙂
My kids won’t eat eggplant unless I puree it and seed it and turn it into baba ganoush! If you like squash overall, you’d like eggplant. Doesn’t lettuse make you sad? LOL Really? Of all the things… 😛

Thanks for having fun with these questions! I liked reading your answers, and the cute pictures…Yay!
For that picky eater list – I wouldn’t want to try oysters or raw fish. I’ve had blue cheese before, but didn’t like it. Everything else I’ve eaten and liked. (well, not the incredibly rare and unique ‘lettuse’) haha!

    • joey says:

Yes, lettuse is not sold at my stores, but I’ll keep an eye out 🙂
Thanks for this one, I had fun. I hope more people will play!
FYI: Oysters are a food people either love or hate. I LOVE!

Oh, definitely let me know if you find the elusive ‘lettuse’. 🙂

  9. This is an entertaining read. And I like pictures too, especially the testing lab. 😀 Out of all foods on the list the only one I seriously never eat because they smell like a meadow: cucumbers. I think own growing of food is the most sensible thing (not that I do, my parents do). As is ignoring 3/4 of supermarket shelves. As is eating the stuff your grandparents ate. Latest book I read: In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. It’s glorious. A glass of wine with your meal is better than no glass of wine. Did you know that?

    • joey says:

Michael Pollan is brilliant, and a voice that needs to be heard 🙂
Botany of Desire remains one of my favorite non-fiction books.
I DO know that about wine, and have been telling The Mister we’ve got to start incorporating more alcohol, because we’ve reached a certain age…

The cream goes in before the coffee.

and did you know that in DownTown Abbey highlight show (never saw an episode tho) they said that in the old days the cheap ceramic would crack if the tea went in before the cream – and so in the show – there was a scene where the lady was considered lower class when she said “cream first” – or milk first – but thought it was interesting

I have not watched any of the epsiodes either – I tried one day and was pained – but i was told you have to start from the beginning and get lulled in – but the time i tried it was like forever watching a girl ride a bike, then they were talking at a table – and – no thanks.
we had friends once tell us about it over dinner and gave us pronunciation lessons – DunnTunn Abbay
        yawn.
But I did just watch Pride and Prejudice (1995) and it was a gift from the heat and to my outlook.

                and
                Mr. Monk Fall in Love
but I wonder if I liked them because i saw them all and then knew the characters – and so those episodes had that bonding undertone –

Happy Friday to you as well. I am a picky eater – not adventurous at all. Like you, I eat very little meat.

  12. Loved the images to go with your answers.
Yes, I have thrown a spaghetti strand at the wall to see if it stuck for doneness. Normally I bite it to see if it’s done.

Well, on that list I like and eat everything on it, but haven’t tried Oysters so don’t know if I like them or not. There’s always something else on the menu I know I like so haven’t wanted to waste a good meal for one that has a risk, and not enjoy me meal out. I’ve had snails…escargo. It was okay. I haven’t ordered again cause I didn’t love it.

The only really persnickety thing about food and me is cottage cheese CAN. NOT. TOUCH. ANYTHING. ELSE ON MY PLATE! Served on it or in its own bowl or plate is even better.
    And, I don’t like Hot Dogs. That’s it. I don’t think I’m a picky eater.

    Liked by 3 people

    • joey says:

Escargot must be saturated in garlic and butter for me to like them. I’ve had them other ways and didn’t enjoy them.
You really should try oysters, although I recommend you do this in the Gulf of Mexico if possible. I love oysters. They are my go to when fresh. Oysters on the half shell with fries and an icy cold beer — that’s good livin!
I don’t like my cottage cheese, applesauce, or baked beans running into other foods. I use ramekins for that stuff to prevent interference. Do you like it plain, or with salt and pepper? Do you like it with tomatoes or fruits? I like it all ways, but I like it best with some salt and pepper.
I think a lot of people don’t like hot dogs. I do, but not often. Coupla times a year will do.

OMG! “red dye hides in shit like green spinach wraps. No lie.” I had trouble getting past that, until I go to the pineapple on the pizza cartoon and lol’d. That and the lab test helped. Good luck with the soda! Soda is insidious.

Anyone who doesn’t put the cream in the cup before the coffee is clearly an inefficient masochist who enjoys doing more dishes. If you pour the coffee over the cream it mixes without dirtying up that one extra spoon.

Ooh, I know what you mean about people fucking up recipes. Some recipes seem like the most basic ever, and certain individuals still find a way to ruin them. But then you have my MIL who demands I make *everything* because she’s worried she might mess it up and it won’t be as good. Stop with that shit, you lazy heffa.

I’m not gonna touch the food quirks/picky list.

It really is annoying all the things that dye hides in…and why?! I don’t care if my banana peppers are a vibrant color. I’d rather do without the yellow #5.
I have used the wooden spoon with boiling potatoes. Apparently, I never pick the right pot size for them. Pasta, yes. Potatoes, no.
I think the only thing on the picky eater list that I haven’t tried is snails. I’ve also only had fried oysters. I have had mussels and scallops that weren’t breaded, but they were cooked. I’m not sure I could do oysters raw.
I really like food when I’m not cooking too! 🙂

About the dye, I KNOW! It’s another reason I love Aldi. So we bought the pickles without dye (WHO KNEW!!?!) and Amy, they’re pretty awful! The skins are hard and downright chewy. WTF?!?
