Recappa Last Day of August

That’s right, right? There aren’t 32 days in August. I never could do that thing with the humps on your knuckles. You know the thing? Prolly my knuckles are wrong. Stupid hands. The only thing that saved me was the poem, “Thirty days hath September…”

I had a nice, relaxing weekend. Which is why I was shocked to wake up sick on Monday. Usually I get sick when I do too much. The Mister said I threw a wrench in the works with my good job at relaxation. I had been too chill, he said. Overcorrected.

Lost a day there.

Monday afternoon was not Instagram material, although the prompt was Silence and it was silent. All the cats were snugly. On accounta bein desert animals and all, cats like hot people. I was sprawling, diagonally, across the foot of my bed. Not on purpose, not how I lay down at all, however, that’s how I woke up. I had been on fire freezing, covered in all the quilts but hours later I was just on fire, pajamas all twisted and displaced.

I thought I was dying because anxiety disorder. My kids thought they’d die cause they hadda take the bus. My mommy was not here, there was no lellow Gatorade, and no one kissed my forehead and told me I’d be okay.

Bout lost Tuesday, too, but I pulled through.

Have I ever mentioned how horrible it is to be a sick mom? I believe I have. It’s like, you feel sick like any other human, but your husband is frustrated in his helplessness and your children are like, “Oh em gee, your illness is so totally ruining my life right now.”

Wednesday I went back to work, which — You ever missed two days at your work? Unplanned? The work is still there, with new work. What.A.Day. A few clients wished me well and were sorry to hear I had been out sick, but not a single one of them sent flowers or brought me chicken soup!
After work Wednesday, we went to the world’s worst fundraiser where they force you to buy ice cream for a good cause, and where bigger ice cream is better. You ever been so happy to be standing on the sidewalk eating ice cream that the world disappeared? Like it’s you and the ice cream in a perfect moment? I could movie montage with that ice cream. That ice cream and I were practically running toward one another in a meadow. I was beside myself with the happy.

Hadda eat a double scoop waffle cone. Half coconut cream, half black walnut. Very drippy. Super happy. FOR A GOOD CAUSE. *does not remember the cause*

Thursday, Sassy stayed home sick as Monday Me. I decided to eat actual food for the first time since Sunday. I know. But I was sick. Mentor and I ordered out and I ate half a turkey, cheddar, apple, horseradish, carrot, arugula sammich on cranberry walnut bread and a cup of chicken and wild rice soup with bread on the side and a giant Coca-Cola and that was all very, very good. And fortifying. So I could make a dent in catching up.

Then I went to the grocery store and bought other real food which I will likely be well enough to both cook AND eat.

Then I went home and lay on my husband and petted him and did all the talky-talk. This is important stuff, y’all.

Today Mentor and I are ordering some Chinese. I feel ready to take on tangy sauce and sticky rice and snow peas. Mmhm. I can handle it.

There may be too much talk of food in this post. Haha, like that’s a thing!

I will work beyond 5:00 traffic. There’ll be extra kids at my house, and I will take the kids to the thing. Then there might be another kid coming overnight. I dunno. I just drive.

This weekend is a long one, and I’m glad. I have new books. (And new readers, which I bought special to keep near my sofa, because that’s where I am in my life now. I can read nothing printed on paper. I sorta need a pair on a hook in every room, but for now, sofa specs. Maybe I’ll get a chain, a really gaudy one. I’ve had glasses since I was 28, but it’s only in the last year I’ve become truly dependent on them. It’s — appreciate your eyesight, okay?)

IMG_E6445

There may also be too many selfies in this post. Although, quite clearly, my vanity need not be a concern. I’m awfully glad to be well(er).

I have decided yes, I will definitely do some good restin over the weekend, but I won’t be too lazy — in case The Mister’s right.

Happy Long Weekend Everyone! Eat tasty and take selfies!

  1. I’ve reached the age where readers in every room of the house is mandated. Yes, there are readers in the medicine cabinets, and readers in the glove compartment and readers in the friggin’ barn as well. And of course I have to carry 2 pairs in my purse because the husband never remembers his. I have yet to lose a pair only to find them on the top of my head…. but I fear that’s coming soon. *sigh*

We are such kindred spirits. And in the barn, too, eh? I believe my bathroom will be the next reader addition. I tire of calling my youngest in to read things to me. lol “What temperature is this iron on?” “Does this have Dimethicone in it?” “What’s the wattage on this bulb?” See, that’s what it is, I’ve got young eyes in the house. I’ve got a few more years to replace the young’uns with readers in every room!
I had kept a pair at my bedside for years, but when Sassy lost hers ($!$!$) I let her take them.
I’ve got transitional glasses, which I must keep in my purse, because if I have to read paper at work and I’m without them, I will be helpless, so in the purse they stay.

      • Mine are just the el cheapo magnifiers, so thankfully I can spread. And I think the bathroom was the first place I permanently housed a pair. I remember cutting myself badly, running… dripping blood… into the nearest loo… and not being able to see the end of the damned Bandaid wrapper to open it. Note – it’s virtually impossible to open those bastards one handed.

Too much emphasis on food? Don’t think that is possible. Sorry to hear of your sick. Glad to hear of your well. That was quite a sandwich you got. Bold and crunchy. Coconut ice cream! That sounds wonderful. I hope you have a good weekend and remember that all things in moderation, especially resting.

  5. Sorry to hear you were sick; glad to read you’re feeling better. I remember about the sick mom/wife thing, although I can only do the sick wife thing as the girls are all grown up and moved out. Thankfully, I haven’t been really sick for a good long while (as in, I can’t remember when.) I’ll try not to relax too much over the long weekend just in case!

I’m not a fan of schools and other causes selling lots of junk and me feeling slightly guilty if I don’t buy any. I’d rather just donate. My husband’s a sucker for those kids at the door, though. 🙂

As for readers, I’ve been wearing glasses since early grade school, contacts since college, and therefore I must have readers while wearing contacts. I get inexpensive (er…cheap) ones at discount stores or Aldi and keep some in every room I frequent. I have several really small pairs that store in metal cases and fit easily into a fanny pack/purse. Love them and got the two I now have at…Aldi. I do love that store. There may have to be one, as well as a Costco, wherever we retire. Do you have them both in Indy? We might be looking in Indiana as a retirement option.

TTFN and have a wonderful, healthy Labor Day weekend…with just enough labor that you don’t get sick!!

I hope you remain not sick for a long, long time. I had a few good years (for me) but I’m generally sickly.
I JUST noticed the readers at Aldi last night, I kid you not. I did not pause to examine them or check their price, but I saw them hanging there. I like the Peepers brand, you seen these? They feel good. Things have to feel good for me. I will look at the Aldi ones 🙂
We do have both Aldi and Costco. I do not do the Costco thing, but my MIL does and sometimes she gets the cake with the pudding/custard between the layers? That alone is good enough reason to go to Costco. LOL
I, too, prefer to donate. I’ve done all the fundraisers and the ones I liked were Scentsy, Yankee Candle, and chocolate bars. Those things sell, and much of it make nice gifts. I truly enjoyed my ice cream Wednesday. Moo had a date to go, and I said, “Why the hell aren’t we getting ice cream?” so we went (not on Moo’s date) also.
      It’s gonna be a great weekend 🙂

Glad you are feeling better. Never too much rest is too much rest, although I don’t know how I know that. I don’t need reading glasses, I need for distance and have since 4th grade, many moons ago. Since I am at home most of the day I rarely wear my glasses. Let my husband walk around all day yesterday with a spot on his shirt because I never got close enough to see it! Have to remedy that situation. Yay for double scoop waffle cone, just not those flavors. Hope your weekend is marvelous!

      Thanks! You too!
I totally understand about the glasses, just in reverse. I don’t wear mine except to read and drive in the dark (I like the anti-glare) so it’s like I’m fine and then someone shows me paper and I realize I’m blind! LOL And somehow, I forget I’m blind all the time and I’m constantly surprised!
My sympathies you’ve been dependent for a long while — we both have it better than a lot of folks!

  11. August will forever be ‘moving month,’ and I have been ‘sick mom’ for all of my children’s conscious life, so I get being happy it’s almost over. Never want to do either thing again. Glad the bug you had is gone. Try not to catch it again from a kid.

I can only imagine your utter exhaustion at this point! I have moved many times in August, twice into homes, but four times into college. August is too hot for me, Alicia. Too hot.
Sick mom life is not nice. Sassy’s feeling better and I hope that’s the last sick for a long, long time. It made me feel a bit better that she got it, not because I want her to be sick, but because she’s young and strong and healthy and it makes me feel better to know it was a nasty bugger. I was sick longer than she, but she was worse sick 😦 I miss the good run I’d been havin…
I realize I’m preachin to the choir there.
Thanks for your support ❤ I hope you settle in nice ❤

Thanks Joey but I don’t do selfies. Too frightening. Being a sick mom is the worst. Especially if you have an infant. Hope you feel well enough for you to enjoy your weekend! (I’ve had to wear glasses since I was eleven!)

  15. So happy to hear you’re feeling better. Nah, it wasn’t too much food. It sounds delicious. Only glad I am not hungry or I’d be raiding the fridge and pantry after this post!

Readers. I miss my 20/20 eyesight so bad! I started needed reading glasses in my late forties. Sigh. Now I need bowls, and bowls of readers in every room.

Whatcha gonna read first? I bought a new book cause I think I really am going to join a bookclub.
If I don’t wimp out that is. I’m reading the book just in case I go. It’s Dandelion’s Summer. So far I like it. It’s going at a nice pace anyway. Not my regular genre, but that’s the good thing about book-clubs; they get me out of my box.

I’m going to read Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance first. It’s a nice fresh hardback and it struck my fancy soon as I saw it. It’s a memoir, and I suppose I read plenty of those, but it’s written by a man, which I read less often. I agree, sometimes it’s nice to get out of our genre boxes.
I think the longer we can go without glasses, the worse the transition is. Did we think we’d get away with our perfect vision forever? Gah! I’m comforted by your bowls of readers. I hate the interruption of going to find glasses. I shall endeavor to have readers in every room.

Sadly I’ve gone to bifocals which means yay, they’re always on my face but boo, things are BAD if I don’t have them on. It’s extremely disorienting to see fuzzy things now when I used to scrape by just fine. Getting old is also why my eyes popped open at 7am on a holiday weekend.
I think I may need to go find some good-cause ice cream today.

I can’t take selfies because there’s something wrong with my phone’s camera. Every time I try to take a picture of myself, this old woman photobombs me. It must be an electronic virus or something because there is no old woman around me when I take the picture. Weird!

I’m so sorry to hear that you were so sick. And “mom” is never like dad or kid sick. Everyone acts like they’re completely dysfunctional without you (oh wait…). I’m glad to hear that it wasn’t one of those long-lingering illnesses.
    I love all the selfies!!
My week was busy…too busy to recount on Friday (which I had planned to do…but teen #2 had a missing wallet crisis that had to be remedied due to important documents located inside it and the fact that we had to be at the courthouse that afternoon for his driver’s license ceremony). The oldest made it to Florida. Now I’m soccer mom-ing it for the weekend and trying to catch up a little between games. Enjoy your weekend!!

so crucial and love the tidbits that show how close you and the hubs are

(and extra points for the Pink Floyd shirt – to wear it without bragging and to allow the band to subtle stay represented in a casual T with a nice eyeglasses shot – you did it right, amiga, dd the band well. and that is important stuff too – hahah)

It is such a nuisance for the kids, isn’t it? I remember the stomach bug of 2016, in which I lost like 12 pounds in 24 hours. The boy had a science fair due THE NEXT DAY, because of course, and I was the only person who could help him get it ready.
