#ThursdayDoors — Apple Orchard

Ah, fall.
Iconic midwest photo:

That’s only twenty minutes from my house, and I live in the city proper.

It was a cool, overcast, beautiful day, perfect for me, so Sassy and I went off to the apple orchard.

Doors — not so much.

IMG_6617

Over all, the apple orchard is all about open doors, but there was one I was glad to see shut.

IMG_6616

Those apples are cortlands, and they really are that color. We picked them, and some golden delicious.

And we did this.

We also shared a pulled pork sammich and practically swooned over the applesauce. It was hard for me to allow my child to eat any of the applesauce. When I handed it over, I said, “This is love.”
After eating a few bites, she said, “I don’t know how you gave this to me. You really must love me a lot.”
We bought a quart to take home. And some honey sticks. And some fudge for The Mister.
We also bought some apple maple bacon jam. You have no idea.

  8. Who cares about doors if there are apples? I pick mine at the grocery store or farmer’s market, but it sounds like fun. I also make applesauce, so I know the love. šŸ™‚ I haven’t had apple maple bacon jam, but I have had bacon jam and it’s amazing!!!!

HI JANET! What kind of apples do you use to make applesauce? We’ve got apple trees so I’ve made applesauce — a lot of delicious applesauce, but theirs is BETTER. I wonder if it’s a kind of apple situation? So I wanna know if that’s it. (I’d still need to make a lot of applesauce… cause you know, trees, waste…)
It was a good walk, a great way to spend the afternoon šŸ™‚

  12. Yay apple season! Since we usually only have a few varieties in our SoCal supermarkets, it’s nice to see that others exist… and those Cortlands look so good. The applesauce label says “made with Hoosier Apples… is that a variety or just an indication of where they are from? And, apple maple bacon jam… just yum.

  13. As a transplanted midwestern boy, I gotta say, I do miss going to the apple orchards. Here in CO they can’t seem to get it right…a few corn stalks and some trucked-in cider just don’t cut it.

What a color! An out-of-doors post. Get it?! Daughter went apple picking in Jersey and brought home apple butter for the gardener. TSA took it away. Sniff.

Oh fresh apples in October and all those goodies (applesauce and bacon) mmmm-
This sure beats the quintessential pumpkin latte October post! And not ever slamming those posts cos they often matk the season – but nice door post for an October day.
We had s warm week and so it does really feel like fall yet (except for the store pumpkin patches – ha!- and some trees)

Oh yes. Apples are just one of the reasons why I LOVE this time of year. Right now I’m overstocked with Honey Crisp and Ginger Gold, with homemade apple sauce in the fridge.

hmmm – I’m thinking pancakes and apple sauce for breakfast. Oh yes.

Honey Crisps are my faaavorite for just eatin šŸ™‚ I like Ginger Golds, too, which is funny cause I don’t care for Goldens, but Sassy loooooves Goldens. Actually, she’s sorta got an apple problem, all year, but it’s a good addiction!

Apple stacks. Ya need to try an apple stack cake. That’s what you need šŸ˜‰

  23. I love applesauce. I’m the only one in my little immediate family unit that does and that apple, maple bacon applesauce is calling me!

What do the Cortland apples taste like? Sweet? Tart? Somewhere in between? Is it a good baking apple? I’ve never seen or eaten those before.

I’m with you on the beehive door…best closed! šŸ

The Cortlands are recommended for sauce, but to eat, they’re soft and more sweet than tart. At the orchard, they use the Cortlands for the candied apples. I like them, and think I’ll get more.
We all eat applesauce and theirs is the best I’ve ever had.

  27. Wow! You’re definitely not talking apples and oranges here! Never saw apples quite that color before. I think we’re going to have to nickname you, Pavlov, from now on since your apple products got us all salivating with the mention of “doors”. Glad you and Sassy had a great time; you might have just turned her the dark side of apples; may the “sauce” be with you. šŸ˜‰
