I Did Mostly Nothing

Okay, so you should know I can’t actually do nothing unless I’m sick, and even then I talk crazy or whine, so it’s still debatable. Also, remember that weekend I did too good of a job relaxing and got a sick?

Friday, we picked Sassy up and took her with us to the store, where we bought a cart full.  I noticed the young couple behind us had merely gathered ale, cookies, and twinkly lights. I could not contain my envy.

When we got home, The Mister blocked my car in, because I would be going nowhere for daaays.
I fell asleep so quickly, I didn’t even put my earplugs in.

I woke up early on Saturday, before I’d ever wake up with an alarm. I had slept well. I wanted to do thoughtful things for The Mister, so I took the dog out and heated up his car and made coffee. Sassy was concerned, “Why are you up?”
“I SLEPT!”
The Mister took Sassy to the thing.

When he got back, we had coffee and then I watched shows and pet my dog and fell asleep.

The boy one is here, guess he’s staying about a week? I dunno. There were extra teens at our house, too. Moo had a painting party and this, along with some exchange of furniture between the girls, on top of Bubba’s luggage and recent acquisitions from my in-laws meant that our house was rather … disorderly. Of course I wanted order, but I knew I needed to conserve energy. I told people that our house was in a transitional stage and carried on.

After the thing, The Mister brought more teens to our house. We had talked about him getting takeout to conserve even more of my energy, but I leaned toward comfort food, so I made some turkey and noodles and corn casserole, reheated some veggies and rolls, and whipped up deviled eggs. We had a table full of happy faces we had a splendid time with the young folks.

The great thing about my kids having friends over is that they people and I can sorta people or not people at will.

Still, I wore my love monkey pajamas all day and I did zero dishes.

Evening snuggles? Yes, please.

Sunday, I slept later, but still rose early for me. I prepared ‘breakfast in bed’ by making two glasses of chocolate milk, collecting a bowl of blueberries, one orange, and a coupla bananas and then we ate that breakfast while watching shows in our bed. We alternated between doing laundry and lying in bed. I dozed off again.

Eventually we got up, and then I had to do stuff, because I can’t start a week in disorder. So I cleaned the house and me, then made us a late dinner.

IMG_0820

I took this selfie with bacon because self-portrait was the prompt of the day, but while I did it, I thought of Zombie Flamingoes.

Then, this morning, the furnace guy had to come out, because well, you know how Diva Furnace does. Apparently, this time around, he simply needed some cleaning. We’re glad it isn’t time to buy a new furnace and glad to be warm.

I worked today, but only midday. After that, I went to the store to get the provisions, but everyone had beaten me to the cabbage and black-eyed peas, so I hope the brisket I purchased is chockablock fulla prosperity on its own. Also, I bought a fancy cake. Mmm, fancy cake.

The five of us are going to Meat n Milk tonight. (Steak n Shake). Moo wants a burger. It’s like when I want a burger — we feed the beast what it desires. I think I’ll get a vanilla shake and a Coke, since it’s practically a holiday.

I am already looking forward to that, and to bed. I don’t even know if I can midnight. Coke will help. I wish I had a Coke RIGHT NOW.

Y’all got big plans for tonight? Did y’all get yer cabbage and black-eyes peas? Do you have brisket, fancy cake, or a warm house? What’s goin on?

Warm house, and rainy outside. I don’t really want to people tonight, but we promised a neighbor to come over to her thing for at least a bit, and maybe bring some brie. I fully plan to be back home, in pj’s and on my couch with Spouse by ten pm because tired, and because the Princess will get home with her bf then and well, we can’t leave them unsupervised. We have another week before they go back to school, and I’m planning on a lot of nothing, besides a dentist appt Wednesday. Happy New Year!

Rainy outside and warm and dry inside is nice! We had crazy wind here last night! I’m sorry you had to people, and I hope the peopling was better than expected — that’s one of my favorite things. I hope you got some good rest and that your week is as empty as you wish! Happy New Year!

  2. We’re talking leftovers out of leftovers at my house. This means ribs from Christmas prime rib, got turned into soup last night. Tonight it’s leftover soup, plus a cheddar biscuit or two. Probably a whiskey to round it all out. We try to stay home on amateur night.

Went to the store and got a cooked chicken and some peanut butter because we were out and that is a panic attack happening for the hubby. Also got some champagne for the midnight toast after which we will probably go to sleep because at 6:30 tomorrow morning hubs is on a plane to Oregon to see his ailing elderly mother. I will be ALONE most of the day which TBH I am truly looking forward to. The lovely daughters come home from Oregon where they have been since Saturday but the young one is going to Disneyland with a girlfriend on Wednesday and the older one will go home so I will be ALONE again! Best New Years’ present ever – LOL Happy New Year to you and yours, Joey. Great picture of you and the Mister by the way. You have pretty eyes.

That all sounds good, except the people. I envy your ability to deal with a bunch of people being thrust upon you. A shake sounds pretty good. I could go for a shake right now. One of my favorite things to eat is turkey and noodles and corn casserole. A long time ago, I wrote about asking my wife – ‘do you have the stuff to make the stuff I like?’ and she said yes, that was the stuff.

I hope you get to relax more tomorrow, whether or not you make it to midnight. It still counts. It’s still a brand new year. I hope it’s a happy one.

Sadly, no big plans here. We’re getting snow and icy sleet so we’re staying home. Old and boring this year!

Raining here. Been raining here since last week. Stayin’ home. Watching Netflix. Just fed and loved on the outside cat–so wish she was my inside cat. Happy New Year to you Joey…and to your people. 😀

It’s been raining a lot here, lately, too. Last night we had some crazy winds, too. Outdoor cats were all tucked into their hiding spaces I’m sure. Happy New Year to you!

The photo of you with bacon looks like an advertisement from the 1950’s with a happy housewife. And I say that in the nicest way. You look happy!

I did not know brisket, cabbage and black eyed peas were de rigeur for NYE. We had chicken stuffed with prosciutto, spinach and cheese, veggies, rice and sauteed spinach and mushrooms. People were happy. Now the young un’s are going out to midnight (I love how you make verbs out of nouns) and darling husband and I shall couch and read and burp. Maybe TV, too.

Happy New Year to you and yours, Joey.

Thank you! I was happy. I wanted those waffles 😛
Yes, it is de rigeur not on NYE, but on NYD, here in America, blend of cultures and all. A few other dishes as well. It’s about good luck and prosperity. Cabbage, or any cooked greens for bank bills, black-eyed peas for coins, and brisket, corned beef — you can find lots of different reasons, but it’s all the same wish. Different traditions for religions and cultures and regions, but more or less the same, each influenced by another. I find it funny that we eat peasant food to bring prosperity, but that is how it’s done. Your dinner sounds divinely gourmet, so perhaps we should ask you what YOU eat on New Year’s Day 😉
      Happy New Year!

Happy New Year. Hope you stay warm and who cares if you don’t do midnight. 2019 will be there when you wake up. We always do midnight almost 2 or 3 most nights so no biggie. As long as I can wake before 10 AM I’m good. It’ll be down to 9 tonight. Black ice warnings abound. Cozy with fuzzy pets and binging on some show. Phone call at 12–one of the few I make all year. Life is good.

  10. We are now well into 2019 and so far it’s going okay. It’s lunchtime and I’m still in pjs. We had our traditional family New Year’s Eve of watching a movie and then cracking out the snacks and something with bubbles in it at midnight while watching the waterfront fireworks from our house (we can’t see the low ones because we’re on the other side of the hill but we get enough of the high ones to make it worth staying home to watch them.) We are keeping warm. Today is a pleasant 26C. Friday it will be 37C.
A Very Happy New Year to you!

Oh Lawd, y’all upside-down people make me so glad I live here. Not on your upside-down, but back in the north of the US, because 37C and I are not friends, and I lived in that sorta place and almost died of hot, and I am just glad to have the cold and snow half the year the way God clearly intended me to live.
Life is also meant to include days we eat lunch in our pajamas, so well done! Your evening sounds LOVELY.
      I hope you have a very happy 2019 🙂

  11. At about the appropriate time, walked to the dining room for a lovely meal including a chocolate fountain. The cheesecake was glorious. I’m getting very spoiled.

But my mind won’t focus enough to write (probably the sugar), so I’ll try again tomorrow. HNY!

  12. I’m afraid you’ll be sorry I told ya. In the wee hours of the night, I was in the retreat nodding off and watching the Twilight Zone Marathon when He-Man woke me saying, “Honey is dead or dying you must come!” I went straight away to her ni-ni bed in the Master Bedroom. She was ever so still, but I whispered, “Honey, are you okay?’ She let out a sighing breath. And, that was that. I watched her eyes the whole time, and then as if a curtain were going down the light in her eyes ever so slowly dimmed to nothing; they looked like glass not looking back at me, just glass eyes looking at space.

I knew she was gone in an instant. It was 2:07 am. Not much we could do then so we tried to sleep and at first light, we began planning. At 10 am we were driving to the place that would cremate her and make her death real to us. Right now as I type this I’ve only shed a few tears, but I feel the welling up. I’ve felt the welling up since I sat by her bed and heard that last sigh. It’s a dam filling up with tears and it’s going to keep filing up and one day probably when I’m in the shower…alone. It’s going to burst. I will cry like a baby then.
I loved her as if she were my 3rd child.
This is hard. I never got it until I became a pet parent. THIS IS HARD!

Tonight He-Man and I consumed a Magnum of Chardonnay and it’s not enough to kill the sorrow.

She’s his and my first dog, and she was the best dog ever. We will get past this sorrow and pain, but it won’t be easy. How she made us hers. This is how we’re spending our New Year’s Eve in sorrow and joy remembering our Diva Dog who left us on Decemeber 31st 2018,

My weekend was as full as I wanted it to be, so Im happy with it. Card games with my cousin and her fiance, then yesterday with her brother doing the same. NYE was spent doing mostly nothing after bottling the little bit of mead I had left, and I was in bed by 10. Its 2am now. I am awake and feeling better. Happy New Years Joey.

We don’t like black eyed peas so we are doing pork and cabbage and maybe some cornbread. We ate on our Pu pu platter and watched the Pacers game while drinking box wine and canned beer. Were asleep by 8, woke at midnight and opened our bottle of Poema cava and back to the shucks by 1:30. Glad you had such a dozy day. Happy New Year Joey.

December 31: Tornado warning, so #1 Daughter-husband and Middle Grandson came to shelter, since they don’t have a basement. When MG was wee, we called such events “storm parties” and pretended we were having fun so he wouldn’t be scared. This time, we DID have fun, reminiscing about those times while #1D-h read her texts from the grocery, where the customers were put into the produce cooler for safety. (walk-in size, I’m assuming) I bought my black-eyed peas last week, to be sure I had some. The cabbage is a sad remnant or a cabbage gone by, but it’s the thought that counts. I hope. Sausage for the pork part. IT’S THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS. Happy new year, and much rest and only as much peopling as you desire.

That’s a good time! In Georgia tornado warnings, we played games in the storage room (interior space) and I sure did try to make it fun and light. Some kids just don’t buy it, lol — Sassy has long hated “nornadoes”. I suppose I would get into a produce cooler, but I’d have to be really afeart, like I’d have to hear it nearby to get that scared.
We had whippin winds up here last night. Whippin! Guess that was all for your nornadoes.
I like to make Hoppin John and was sad, and will henceforth add NY food to my Xmas shopping list.
      Happy New Year!

  17. Rest and warmth–all good! We spent some time with good friends, toasting in the New Year in France ( a thing at a local spot), then watched some football, and went to bed. As we have radically different bedtimes, cuddling was this morning, after which my husband promptly fell back asleep and I got up and started getting some things done. 🙂 The daughters and new son-in-law left Saturday, so our nest is empty, quiet, and getting back into shape. But it was a wonderful time of chaos and love.

The first year of 2019 will be filled with more football, eating and drinking, and probably cleaning and organizing (a bit, anyway.) I pray that your (and that means all of you) 2019 will be filled with joy, love, and as many blessings as God can cram into your lives.

Hello, Joey. Fondly Elizabeth here. I know, it’s been an age, but something tells me you’ll remember. My family and I have been hibernating (like drinking 10 days past expiration milk hibernating.) Either my taste buds are gone or the milk is fine, either way I am officially de-peopled and will struggle to resume normal leaving the house, going to work, interacting with people activities tomorrow. Ugh. I am committing to resume blogging after a 3 year hiatus so hopefully we’ll stay connected.

    Fondly (ahem),

Sorry I missed this post yesterday. Plans … now achieved goals were making and devouring extremely rich shrimp & oysters fondue with bread dippers. Eggnog was the poison of choice. Beverage or dessert, you be the judge.

But that was yesterday. Now I want Meat and Milk or a big ole burger with a vanilla shake and Coke!!! I’ve got the black eyed peas but dang that sounds lame compared to what could be. Shake Shack is calling me …

So very curious … what’s with the cabbage and black-eyed peas? Is this a ‘thing’ for New Year’s Eve?

… and now I’m wondering about this turkey, noodle, corn casserole. It has 3 things I like so that’s a good start 🙂

I’m not a wait-up-until-midnight kind of person just so I can drink a glass of bubbly and say Happy New Year. It doesn’t seem very logical when my body is saying ‘go to bed’ at 10 pm. I can happily greet the new year in the morning … with a cup of coffee 🙂

  25. I see this a bit late but I’ll tell you what went on: I had amore and his father and bestia at home, we ate lentils (“They have black-eyes peas because they don’t know about the lentils,” amore said when he learned of your peas) and sausages and the strudel amore and I made the day before. We drank limoncello regular and limoncello my father made by not really following any directions so it is STRONG and then the bubbly at midnight, and watched mostly crappy Italian TV with mostly crappy singers and then changed channels and saw Le Freak doing their Chic (or vice versa) live (well…) and it continued in this groove and I danced a bit by myself because dog was indignant at the noise outside (not much erratic behaviour this year, he’s getting older) and the men were being their withdrawn selves, and I was thinking where are some girlfriends when you need them?

Anyway, it’s a new year now and I hope it’s being gentle with you and yours. Greetings from Rome where it’s freezing and the trash is overflowing everywhere because they simply don’t empty the containers. I hope it’s not symbolic for this year.

Mmm Coke. I got off my Coke Zero about three months ago because I was in a “Fuck it” mood and have not fixed that. Such a hard habit to kick because it is SO good.

We did not do cabbage and stuff. I don’t like it of course, but I remember my grandmother cooking it every New Years Day. She also had some other cute little superstitions, like on the first day of every month, making the first words out of your mouth be “Rabbits foot” for good luck. And on full moons, she’d empty out her purse, take it outside and say, “Full moon, beautiful moon, fill ‘er up, fill ‘er up, filler ‘er up” to bring good luck for getting money.
