I find arts are deeply personal and are therefore a subject of preference. Now and again I’m awed to discover not everyone likes _____________ — twinkly lights, doors, Shakespeare! I’m frequently mistaken in assuming there are certain things we all agree on, a canon of arts so to speak, and despite the fact that my mother taught me the dangers of assumption long ago, despite the fact that I don’t understand the hype over Harry Potter, Thomas Kinkade, or Elvis, I’ve yet to learn.
A friend of mine once photographed all her objets, typing out their origins and sentimental value, a kind of inventory of the things one carries, if you will. If your things don’t have stories, why do you still carry them? If they have stories, why wouldn’t you share them?
We all do like a good story, RIGHT?!?

There are a lot of things I don’t get and most of the stuff I carry have no stories. The stuff I have with the best stories are kept home. Safe. Enjoy the snowy weekend.

Funny you mention Thomas Kincade. I remember him–there was an entire store in our local mall devoted to his work. I am not a saver of stuff, but the stuff I do have…..I love the stories surrounding them.

Stories! Yes! Have you ever seen SMOKE? A movie about the weight of intangible things, especially stories. People tell each other stories all through it. Odd li’l movie. I love it, but it definitely isn’t everybody’s cup o’ tea.

I never appreciated artists like Picasso, Rembrandt and Monet until I saw their paintings up close at the Smithsonian. Sometimes it takes seeing or hearing or participating in art before truly appreciating it.
Then again, I could listen to rap music all dy long and..

I’m not blaming her at all, but I think having somebody else living here (daughter for the last half year and now d’s bf) has distracted and fragmented my tiny mind. I’m envisioning a shattered teacup on the floor. That my brain on “houseguests.” And my uncle is here now, too.

Stories. Although it has nothing to do with the stories objects, my dad used to sometimes scratch our backs and tell us a story when it was bedtime. He made up some good stories and getting your back scratched is always grand. Guess I digressed, but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. 🙂

It was grand. Dad worked a lot (five days a week and half a day on Saturday), but he made memories with us.

I get not gettin’ stuff. I useta get things I now don’t, and I enjoy things that were just ok in the past. I can’t explain art cuz some is ‘wow’ and some, ‘what am I missing here?’ Personal for sure, but I am not always able to explain it either. I look around my room at stuff on my walls: Lions, ravens, poets, ducks, books&coffee&rain, more. “All we are not stares back at all we are.” (W.H. Auden)

I would recommend it. We saw it off Broadway @ 2013. It is all the books acted out in short hand. Audience participation if you are up front. A crash course for me who never read past the first sentence in the first book. Lulu who read and loved them all really enjoyed the show too. Said it stuck to the stories. The touring company came through San Antonio last month. My co-worker took his son and they liked it too.

Stories. So many times I think the story makes the image better than it is- like without the story to go with it it’s just a meh photo.
I don’t get art or poetry like deeply understand it, but I like what I like.
I’m over Harry Potter and ready to give away my set of books now. If one of the girls don’t want them I’ll freecycle them.

Glad to know I’m not the only one head-scratching over Hairy Putter (yes I spelled it right). On the flip side I watched my nephews devour those books when they were little, and anything that gets youngsters hooked on reading can’t be all that bad right?

I’m so with you on Thomas Kinkade. Elvis, nice voice but terrible movies. HP- good in the beginning but she lost me with the booger flavored jelly beans.

I also think art is deeply personal. Some people’s taste, I’m like “hmmm…I don’t get it” and others I’m like “yay, we are kindred spirits.” I do like Harry Potter. Not at a hype level. The other two…meh.

I like the idea your friend had to photograph the things that were of value to her and then tell their stories. I wish I had thought to ask my mom about some of the things she had held onto for decades – like the remarkably ugly lamp I wrote about once. I’m sure there was a great story in there, but it died with her.
People who visit my home for the first time sometimes question why I have a paddle hanging in the front hall … 😉
