Echo, hm? The Mister was part of Echo Company. I forget all the things. It was so long. So long that any time I told people the things, they’d tell me that was too many things, and I’d say what I’d been taught to say, which I no longer remember, because one of the great joys of my life is not having to recite and write that stuff everywhere I go.

“Baby, what was the thing?”
*narrows eyes*
“Echo Company thing.”
“Echo Company 3rd BSB FSC 3/69 AR BN”

Yep.

He had different jobs based on location, stateside and … holy hell, I forget the words, isn’t that fantastic? Not stateside, the other.

“Baby, what’re the words for not stateside?”
“In country.”

Yeah, that. It not make sense.

The last few years he was HR, somethin about S-1. If you’d ask me what he did then, I’da told you he delicately managed the raving delusional madness of his narcissistic boss and babysat grown men using only the Uniform Code of Military Justice and a cell phone.

So anyway, that’s what Echo means to me. Shit I don’t have to recite anymore.

    My husband was echo co. 3rd bat recon something or other in Vietnam. And as many times as he’s said it over the years, I still never get it right!

    That’s a great echo. Babysitting is tough work, even tougher when the babies are older.

    Got me thinking too. “Down Range” was dangerous (could be shot). “Feet wet” (over water. also what would happen if…). Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Fox Trot (the phonetic alphabet). Leave (vacation). Grunt (ground pounder or people on the ground). FOB (wife thinks it’s a key thingy, but it is Forward Operating Base). I still like this one: FUBAR (bet you do too). Class A (uptown uniform), Mess Dress (formal attire). Farts and darts (the clouds and lightening on an AF colonel’s service cap). Fun meter pegged, so I’ll stop.

    If I haven’t before, please tell your Mister thank you for his service. My husband’s family has a long line of military men (and at least one woman) in it. Every time he sees someone that looks like he was in the military (either because they have a uniform on or are wearing a military cap) he stops what he is doing to shake their hand. I’ll never forget the time we were in the airport waiting for our daughter to get off a plane after a school trip she had been on and a bunch of service people came off first. He started clapping and then everyone started clapping. It made me cry, you know?

    That was amazingly how I remember hub-stuff. Or even the kids-stuff. They like to test me to see if I remember the game song or some aspect of Star Wars creatures. It’s my me-stuff and if I tested them they wouldn’t know those either! Glad you are allowed to forget his-stuff, even if it was thank-worthy. Thank him for me.

    Military talk like this reminds me of M*A*S*H. And that’s not a bad thing to be reminded of. I don’t understand the specifics of the military words, letters, numbers, but then I don’t have to, do I?
