This Week was a Bummer, Man

I worked the holiday. I think unless it’s a day people celebrate with greeting cards or feature foods, we work it. My family was at my house and I was not and it was sad.

We had an inundation of what is called ‘wintry mix’ or as I like to think of it, nature’s complimentary slushy (flavors not available.) If you’re unfamiliar with that, it falls like rain or like snow and either way, when it hits the ground, it forms a slush, which may freeze in a cohesive manner or scatter like sand, but it will not provide traction regardless. The moment compression occurs, feet or tires, its truth is revealed — Slick Stuff. School was delayed.

I don’t watch regular tv anymore. I mean, I could, if I wanted to. I can turn on the antenna and watch tv, but there are commercials on tv and they are awful. I was at the dentist again (it was fine again) and they had the regular tv on. First it was Ellen, which I enjoy, but this group came on, and brace yourselves, it was a sorta country meets R&B vibe which almost made my ears bleed. Then Family Feud, and I do so enjoy Steve Harvey, but then it was all light saber sounds in my mouth and I couldn’t hear a damn thing UNTIL the commercials came on. I could hear those over the laser battle. Then the news came on, and there was a story about Indy’s potholes, no kiddin!
From work to the dentist, I saw potholes big enough to take a bath in. Leaving the dentist, I saw a sign in the right hand lane — someone had painted it and set it in the street <—- BIG POTHOLES and I had to drive into the left lane quick, like all the people in front of me, because there was no way to maneuver around them. This is a problem every winter, and this year is second to none.

Crossroads of America. Yay.

One morning, I woke up in the middle of the night — obvs, totes dark — but it was actually five and I couldn’t fall back asleep. It was terrible.

hilarious good morning memes.jpg

Mood.
Which sweater? Which jeans? Which boots? Quelle monotonie.

Twelve hours later I was attacked by a case of unemotional tearful yawning.

Office Manager is on vacation. I hope she returns before I run out of red ink and decaf.

I have been spared a sick that took Mentor out of the office.  First she tried to hide it. She was holed-up in her office hackin her brains out. Immunocompromised me stood outside the door hollerin, “Why did you bring that here?!” Then she tried to be all badass about it, sayin things like, “Meh, I’ve felt worse,” and “I’ll see you tomorrow,” while the rims of her eyeballs had clearly been boiled red. She did NOT see me tomorrow. Or the next day.
Honestly, if you told me she had pneumonia, whooping cough, tuberculosis, and the croup, I’da said, “Yep, that sounds about right.” I had to go into her office and touch her mouse and keyboard and then I used all the hand sanitizer ever. Then I Clorox wiped her shit and washed my hands. My job is substantially harder without her, but it’s about ten times worse after I’ve been absent.

Today, Receptionist is buying me a Molly Melt. She said, “I’ll buy if you go get it,” and I said, “Absolutely!” She already paid me in advance, which made me chuckle, as if money has been exchanged and I have entered into a cheeseburger contract. I’m REALLY looking forward to that.

This weekend, Flotsam and Jetsam are coming and going with their tribe. I must perform my Old Mother Hubbard ritual. Maybe I’ll do other stuff. Maybe going out will invigorate me, you never can tell. If not, there are linens to launder and books to read on Sunday.

  1. That was a WEEK. Glad you survived. 🙂 My week has some ups and downs just like most weeks, but I did finish a quilting project that was left over from a class I took last week. Today, I’m off to the quilt show to get inspiration for a new project. Hope your weekend is quiet and you get some time for reading. Love the shirt.

My immediate boss is on vacation this week, Joey, so, the big boss has been handing down lots of stuff to my lateral colleague and I. And to wrap up the week today, this co-worker is off as well. One person-department! Oh joy for the final work day at the library. I am looking forward to this weekend. Tomorrow brings the annual Martinfest for my dear wife Karen and I. Big fun with our adventurous friends out in the downtown Syracuse parking lot!

Martinfest comes early this year, non? I know y’all will have a good time 🙂 And it will feel all the more happy after being the one-person department. I was a one-woman show Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. You and I are hardworking and dependable and now we are so tired, hm? We must rest well tonight to do the things tomorrow!

  3. We’re covered in slush as well, which just iced over this morning so that should be fun.
Nothing worse than a sick co worker… grab your disinfectant spray and hide!

I slept through most of this week thanks to new meds. Glad today is my last day on em. Ugh.
Been in a fog/funk most of the week too. May be due to meds. Or the Seasonal thing, or not. I dunno anymore.
Hope your weekend is good. 🙂

Sorry the new meds wiped you out 😦 Seasonal depression shit is real, yo, and new meds that wipe you out make it worse. So much dark and gray and cold, bleh.
Thank you, I do aim to enjoy myself — and maybe a few other people. I hope you do the same!

Slush sucks. Weird work weeks where half the world is off work [or school] just disrupts the natural flow of life. It’s all wrong. And having a busy weekend, Old Mother Hubbard, well– good luck with that. Next week will be better. I know this because next week February comes to an end, and March is always better than February.

It IS all wrong! Thank you! I guarantee you Mentor would rather be well and at work, but there’s no way the kids would’ve rather been at school!
March is so long. I think it’s almost as long as January. But there’ll be some good weather, right? Your ducks will stop perching atop flooded furniture and Indy will fill more potholes, right?

Happy Friday, Joey! Sounds like we had the same week, only my quelle monotonie is the same pajamas over and over. I only risk the slush to buy food and visit my mother in hospital. Fun stuff, you know.

I worked and so many people were like, “Did you enjoy the holiday weekend?” I’m all WHAT HOLIDAY? Motion that if some have the day off, all have the day off. Second?

Glad you’re not getting The Sickness. People need to keep that to themselves.

I am on the cusp of a self-imposed three-day weekend. I like to keep paid time off for days during weeks when a snow day is never an option, but I’ve reached my tipping point (beyond actually) so it’s best for all if I stay home on Monday. Ahhhhhhhhhhh.

ENJOY THE WEEKEND reading ALL the books!

I second your motion, and HOW!
I think Mentor thought she might feel better as the day goes on (as many of us do at times) but I knew she was terrible sick when she was in denial about the sick.
You enjoy your three-day! You take that mental health day and treat yo self right, okay?
I shall read a book, unless of course, it is a quick read, in which case, I will start another.

The Denial of The Sick is almost worse than The Sick. Glad you could help her see through all that.
I will! On Joey’s orders, I am treatin’ meself right.
        Enjoy the book(s)!

  9. We had slush too. I did a nice hundred yard slide on the highway past Fred Meyer. Why do they have stoplights on 60 MPH highways? It was a week of ups and downs. I’ve been covering for a different department who doesn’t seem capable of hiring anyone worthy. This means my own work fell behind, but I can see the top of the mountain. I might not get there today, but I can see it.

I feel you on the highway bit, except of course when I want to CROSS the highway, then I like that I get a turn. Flashing lights might be better – depends. Sure am glad you didn’t slide into anything!
My desk looks like I do not possess any organizational skills 😦 I would have needed to stay over AT LEAST an hour to find my desk. Ugh. I hope that department gets a good one. Of course, then I’ll feel badly for that person, who will probably spend an unreasonable amount of time making up for all the department lacked prior.

Meh-same o same o. The rut I find myself in is damn near as deep as one of Indy’s potholes. I don’t do ruts; gotta get back on point. What is a Molly Melt? I know it has to do with food. After all we are talking Joey not Lindsay Lohen. Have a Happy Friday.

That made me LOL! Right, no mollies for Joeys. Imagine the hyper spin, ugh! That Molly Melt is yummo. Is greasy and cheesy and chipotley and oniony and tomatoey.

I had a good week. I tried to wish a good week onto you, but I guess I missed. Maybe someone in Kentucky or Nebraska had the good week meant for you. I have never worked anywhere where we got President’s Day, Columbo Day, MLK Day, Veterans Day of any of the lesser holidays off. I’ll get Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day, and then I retire and get all the days. The best thing about President’s Day is that there are no school buses on the road during my commute.

Sick people should stay home! I am so much not impressed by someone working through the contagious phase of their illness and infecting me.

I hope (big wish coming) that you have a great weekend! – But, I do have to say, your stories are funnier when things go off the rails a little. Still, not wishing bad, just an observation.

Memorial Day. Yeah, we get that. That’s kinda farrr, huh? Labor Day, too. Well, at least we have things to look forward to and soon you will own all your days! I do enjoy the low traffic on days I work when we are few. Good point!
I don’t wanna be sick at all, and I sure don’t want what Mentor has. I assume, a plague. Of course, I don’t want to complete all her work, either, so it’d really be best if neither of us were ever ill at all.
Thank you! I think that good week you wished me landed on John Holton, but I’m not going to Georgia to pick it up. It’ll probably find me next week 🙂

My week was meh. I backed out of all social obligations but one. I’m working on getting the plague I think, or maybe I’m just tired from going and going and going over the last month and want a good/solid excuse to just stay home on the couch. I know I shouldn’t complain, but I’ve lived in San Diego for 17 years and it’s never been this cold and this wet for this long, ever. Happy Weekend!

Accident repair estimates (not our fault), dealing with insurance company in a state hit by back to back hurricane force winds, routine maintenance of car (not car in accident) reveals under the hood is a mouse hotel and sleaze bar. Ended with a sore throat. More rain coming down from Canada. I do love the Canadians but they should definitely stop those winds at the border. Illegal alien arctic winds is what they are. Happy weekend.

well our pothole are bad here this year but I had no idea about Indiana potholes and the image was crazy. I hit such a big pothole (about two weeks ago) it scared me and i still shiver – and I do not think it did any damage – I do know someone that was showing us his tire and a claim he made and it was approved. Not sure the details – but glad for him

that cat image – not sure what to wear – oh thanks for the smile

hope your mentor is 100% soon and glad you did not get it….

Wow…I hope it’s a good weekend for you.
I was alone and reading in a derm-doc’s room where I would spend an hour or so. I asked the tech to turn off the TV. She asked me if I wanted her to change the channel. I looked at my iPad, swallowed the smart ass remark forming on my tongue and said I did not want to watch tv. She picked up the remote and clicked off, set it near me, and left. What is the obsession with television? Reading is better and has fewer commercials. Sigh.

It is. Although during dental procedures, I do find the tv a welcome distraction. Now I’m actually sitting here wondering why they don’t do that for other procedures… but that’s a whole other thing.
Hope your dermappointment was a smooth one — pun intended.

Your description of the weather as a slushie is award-worthy. And Indy’s potholes sound reminiscent of Ottawa’s. You’d think we had the same climate or something. In fact, driving home from a lunch date with a friend yesterday, I drove over a gauntlet of unavoidable potholes and arrived home with a flat tire. I’d like to send the Mayor the bill.

Glad you made it to the weekend!! Our week was slushie too! No school on Wednesday. They had school Thursday, which confused the oldest because his college classes were canceled. College never gets canceled while high school keeps running. Everyone knows high schools closes for even a hint of weather issues. But Friday, the oldest turned 19. We had pizza and cookie cake and it made us forget that after slushie days, we’ve days of nonstop rain.

Oh that’s nice — pizza and cookie cake 😛 We may need to do that just to celebrate the end of February! lol
The commuter population of college campuses it what I believe causes them to cancel more days now. I’m really anti-risking-life-and-limb for work and school. I wish they’d be consistent, but always safer is better. Especially out your way, all the hills and curves!

I’m glad I don’t work anymore and subjected to other people’s flu bugs. That however still didn’t save me this winter when Husband came home from a business trip to San Diego and brought one home with him. “if you told me she had pneumonia, whooping cough, tuberculosis, and the croup, I’da said, “Yep, that sounds about right.” …. described me perfectly for the first half of February. Turns out it was my old nemesis bronchitis.

Stay healthy, Joey … and mind the slush. No slush here today. All the recent melt has refrozen solid. We are back to skating rink conditions … and pot holes! Don’t get me started!

Belated acknowledgment of your stellar work. I sometimes read your posts on my phone, and then try to comment, but my phone makes me try to login to my WordPress account and then, I can never remember my password, so I forget to post anything. If it ever seems like I am catching up on about twenty posts, I’m just checking in to see if I can remember the comment I was going to make at the time of reading it the first time. But, by the time I give this explanation, anything funny I was going to say slips my fragile mental grasp. If I ever had a witty thought, sadly, it’s gone now. Does this make sense to anyone else?

Note to self: Maybe lay off the caffeine. It seems to lead to stream-of-consciousness reply that is not applicable to the post in question.

Since I’m late to the party, I’m assuming you survived. This week has been better at least for me. And to HELL with sick people at work. Leave that shit at home. On the 7th floor of my building, 75% of them got the flu. 75%!!! Of course the fact that they shove so many people in a tight space doesn’t help, but I’m sitting here with Clorox wipes and hand sanitizer mere inches from my person.
