Lately, what falls from the sky is rain. Rain, rain, rain. I love rain. It’s the best. Except when there’s too much of it as there has been in previous years and thusly I do concern myself that this May will be too rainy as in previous years. Then I don’t get my things planted and if I’m not up to my ears with basil and over my head with sunflowers by August, I do feel a bit sad.
The other day when the sky was falling, I tried to be like Dan and take pictures of pretty reflections in puddles. I am no Dan.
I will practice and one day, I will get a good one, I just know it.
The rain is pretty on my tulips. This is one of my few remaining Queen of the Night tulips, the very dark purple people call black – surely a delicacy for squirrels. I’ve lost so many I don’t plant them anymore. When they’re gone, they’re gone.
Went out to collect a few of my pinks — these are Darwin hybrids, some French name with too many vowels for me to remember. It’s right up there with oreilles, but like, even moooore vowels.
While I was out there, I saw my patio is fully of whirlygigs, helicopters, maple propellers, whathaveyou. Those are also falling from the sky, sky being trees.
The other day, I was pulling out of my driveway and saw a big black bird hunting a squirrel. I have spent a lot of time staring at my trees, but THAT I had never seen. I told Moo about it and I said crow, but she said, “Uh huh, raven.” If Moo says it was a raven, then it was probably a raven. Well I was scared for my squirrel, but he climbed into a knothole and PHEW! Watch out for big black birds swooping in from the sky!
We’re a bit behind where we usually are seasonally. It’s usually been warmer by now. I’m wearing a sweatshirt and socks and it’s too cold to have the windows open. I’m not complaining, it’s not like summer won’t come, and I’m no fan of the hot. Hot also falls from the sky, heavy and blinding and dangerous to my skins. Ugh.
If it’s still not hot here, I’ll be hot on vacation. Vacation does not fall from the sky. You have to earn vacation. When I was interviewing for my job I told them this summer, I would need to take vacation when my husband takes his vacation and the kids are out of school, so that we can all vacation together, as a FAMILY which my previous boss struggled with. Apparently.
Yay Vacation! Yay My Mommy! My mother still lives in The South. I know, it’s very sad how I’ll be so hot. I haven’t seen my mother in years. Years.
And there’s a beach there. And also oysters. Oysters do not fall from the sky. If they did, I would lie down, my mouth wide open, like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I never saw the movie, just love the book. When I was little, that book cracked me up!
I think I’ve run out of steam – stream? on things that fall from the sky. How bout more of what comes up from the ground?

I like your photos, the colors are lovely, the rain enhances the colors. And I especially like the idea of you going on a vacay as a family. Now that’s something to look forward to, even if it’ll be hot. Bet it’ll be pretty.

Thank you so much! It’ll be beachy, just beachy 🙂 There’ll be family and laughter and oysters and cocktails. It’s been years!

You know more of the flower names than I ever will. If there was a flower category on Jeopardy, you would rock it! That’s nice you’ll bear the heat to see your mom. I know the sacrifice, truly. 🙂 I had a boss like that… Actually, I’ve had bosses like that. Glad you don’t anymore. Wishing you sunny skies and happy vacay dreams!

Thank you! I would love to be on Botany Jeopardy!
I don’t know what that’s about, with the vacay. It’s not like he didn’t take em.

Don’t let the puddle pics be a reflection upon you. Great pics. I need to get me one of them black (night) tulips. Cool.
Have a good weekend y’all.

Love the Queen of the Night Tulips, color, name, everything. Vacay with the fam is a wonderful thing. We don’t do it enough. Didn’t do it much when the kids were little either, sadly.

I’m glad you like them.
When the kids were smaller, we traveled MORE! Now they’re so busy. This is our second proper vacation in 6 years!

This was so fun! Your black tulip is gooorgeeeooooouuuus. You see what I did? I was getting in practice for all the vowels in your French tulip which is very, very pretty. It is pouring here. And hot. But I refuse to turn on the a/c just yet. Electric company does not get my money until I am good and ready. Gonna be really hot in south FL. Poor Joey. Hey–something else! The Culver’s near me opened. Son had a cheeseburger, fried cheese curds, and custard. Yup, he loved it. I told him you told me he would. 😀

Hurrah for Culver’s! Cheese curds sound great right now! I hope you’ll go and enjoy it, too.
It will be SO HOT, but the hotel will have AC and there will be cold cocktails galore! AND MY MOMMY! 😀

You have such cool pictures of flowers. I really love flowers I just can’t grow them. Hell 40 some years ago I tried to grow pot and the shit died. It is a weed that grows wild yet I manage to kill it. I enjoy the rain as well. In the day I want sun at night rain is okay. I do have a passion for so called Black Roses. They remind me of a lost love.Maybe you need to get a hawk to protect your squirrel from the Raven.

Imagine the weed I could grow! Hah!
We have a red-tailed hawk, I dunno what HE was doin when the big black bird was huntin my squirrel!
I agree with you, I’d rather have the rains at night. I’d also prefer not to drive in it.

I like the puddle picture and the dark purple tulip too. Your last picture is post card perfect.
Enjoy your earned vacation. Sounds wonderful even if hot!

The tulips are beautiful. Speaking of squirrels, I have noticed the squirrels in the yard nibbling off the pyracantha branches. At first, I worried that they were eating the blossoms and that they were doing a bad thing for themselves because if they eat the blossoms there will be no berries for them to eat later. But now I think they may be eating the bugs, I hope the wooly aphids, that also like to live off the pyracantha.

Hm. I hope they are eating the buggies! That sounds like a good natural thing for both species!

That photo of your Queen of the Night with raindrops on it is GORGEOUS. And I, too, and a little bit scared for your squirrel. I’m curious, though — we had an *enormous* black bird land on our back fence and I assumed it was a crow but maybe we’re talking raven. I’ll have to look up the difference!

I’ve since done some Googling. I think Moo is right. Raven. Watched some videos. Very predatory *wince* 😦

OOOOO Love that Queen of Night Tulip, Joey. LOVED every one of your pictures even if you didn’t. Rain here too …. too much to the point I’m not able to get to some of my gardens. I did manage to get out in some of those gardens to get pics of flowers. *sigh* Summer I have a feeling is coming with a BANG. One minute cool and rainy, next …. hot and drought. Have a beautiful Sunday!! 🦋🦋🦋

Thanks for the shout. I like your reflections, and I love the tulip with the drops, cuz I love drops more than anything. We’ve had so much rain. We’re behind you on the whirrlycopters, but they’re forming in the trees…in the rain. It’s supposed to be nice tomorrow.
I’m glad you have a boss that understands the simple human things that need to take precedence over work. I’ve worked for both kinds, including one who delighted in forcing people to change their plans.
I hope you have a good week, including Tuesday!

I’m so glad you like the drops! 🙂
I am also glad your river is receding. I want the rains to be just right for everyone, but it never seems to work that way.
I never could understand how my boss thought he couldn’t afford to spare my 15-25 hours that week. Then when he didn’t want to give me time after my father passed, well… that’s when I quit. I was reliable and dedicated and offered to make up the time, didn’t ask to be paid for it. Am person. Have whole life. Job not worth that.

My boss lectured me about “priories” when I took half a vacation day when my wife was having eye surgery. I don’t know what these people are thinking.

I love your flowers, but can’t get into all the names of them. On the other hand, I can tell a crow from a raven. I doubt either one will give your squirrel much trouble. My dogs protect their yard from squirrels like it’s the Wall in the North.

If it’s a really big black bird, it’s a raven. If it’s a bird about the size of a pigeon, it’s a crow. Why? Caws!

I’m glad that of all those things you mentioned, only helicopters (of the plant kind) and big birds fall from the sky (and the big birds aren’t after us, are they?). And of course, the rain. We too have had more than enough and are very thankful that Friday, Saturday, and today have been dry. Today I can even have the windows open, which I do whenever possible! I think my husband would never open them left to his own devices. But then just think how stale the house would smell. Yuk!
Anyway, hopefully you be both warm and dry soon. We’re looking at warm with a bit more rain tomorrow, then no rain, but back into the 50’s and 60’s.

Yay for family vacation! No yays for rain, though. Last week was miserable wet and cold, but the weekend has been glorious. This coming week…more rain and cool. Ack!
Love the purple/black tulips. It’s too bad the Queen of the Night is what’s for squirrel supper. They should eat the weeds and dandelions instead.

Yes, I heard that, if you see one crow, it’s a raven; if you see more than one raven together, they’re crows. Joey, I was in Indy this weekend, but peopling SO HARD I didn’t have any time to person. I thought about how fun it would be to Joey while I was there, but no Joeys were to be Joeyed with on that weekend. But the thought kept me sane, even with so people.

I sure wish I coulda peopled with you, Marian. We don’t have to people at one another. We can just be. If you ever need a break up here, you text me, I’ll lend you the quiet room and of course, my good company 😉

Hi Joey / the ending photo is the gem that I enjoyed all week! Like the pinks and the queen of the night is wonderful – snd I had a light because I read the sentence wondering WHO ARE those very dark purple people??? I quickly got what was intended – but omg – I had a fun smile thinking of
“the very dark purple people”
—
Maybe they fall from the sky?
Oh and never saw the movie either but also love the cloudy with chance of meatballs book

Haha! What a funny phrase “the very dark purple people” — !!! I wonder how many read it like that?!? What SoCS can do 😉 Because of professional writing in my job, I have to insert THAT in a lot of places I normally wouldn’t, and I think you’ve just shown why specifically THAT is crucial at times. If you should meet very dark purple people, I hope you’ll photograph them and do one of your impromptu interviews!
Thanks so much for the lovely comments on my photos 🙂

Well
We somehow need to keep this alive – the very dark purple people – has a nice literary feel –
And I promise that if I see any I will grab an interview (that was fun to read- that you remembered my on the spot interviews – I have a small collection accumulation that one day I will find something to do with)
