Lunch on the Rocks

You know how people say, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead?” Yeah, I’ll retire when I’m dead. And then, after I’ve been given the answers to all my questions and have been shown where the ice cream parlor is, I’m sure I’ll take an afterlife job. I dunno, maybe teaching young eager souls, growing supernatural flowers in a weedless garden, or mediating land disputes between lap giraffes and miniature sheep. It’s really anyone’s best guess, but I guarantee you, I’ll be busy not makin monies.

Anyway, my point is I generally don’t think about retirement. I generally think about how to do all, all, all the things.

Except, recently I thought about retirement. Lemme tell you why.

I met Benson for lunch.

When I arrived at Texas Margaritas, Benson, hep cat that he is, was already seated.

unnamed (81)

righteous red converse on his feet

He had not been at work, on the phone with the big corporation and their infernal muzak, running the gamut of the five incompetent people one must explain to before reaching that sixth magical person who is smart enough to understand the discrepancy.

While I was doing that, Benson was ordering some chips and salsa and a margarita.

unnamed (82)

blurry and hungry

unnamed (80)

deliciously blurry

By the time I was peeking into my shrimp quesadilla, he was ordering his second margarita. I ordered a Mr Pibb. And I loved it. I did. But it was not a margarita, because I am not retired. And given how blurry my pictures are, I really didn’t need the caffeine and I prolly could have benefited from a margarita because I’m spazzy and frenetic enough. When my Pibb was all gone, I drank my water like a good workhorse should.

Cause it was not a weekend. It was not vacation. For me. For Benson, it’s all weekend vacation margarita time, and so I envied him just a teeny tiny bit because margaritas are delicious.

Y’all, I dunno what I’m doin this weekend, but Imma try to wear my Converse and drink margaritas. If you’re able, I highly recommend you do the same.

Happy Friday Everyone!

Cheers to you meetin’ up with our friend Benson, Joey! He did carve a nice retirement food gig for his own self, in my opinion!

I’m pretty sure that, in the afterlife, if a door needs to be trimmed or a window unstuck or some poor dog soul needs a place to sit and watch the angel birds, I’ll make myself available. As for retirement, I look forward to the blurring of week and weekend, but I’m not sure it’s gonna happen. Weeks are still defined by others – we can’t walk Maddie until the school buses come – we have to have appointments, cuz that’s when people work – we can’t just scoot over for lunch, cuz the business crowd – I think weekends will still mean something. I’ll let you know. In any case, I’m looking forward to finding out.

I’m thinking Benson has the right idea: Converse and margaritas sounds pretty darn good as I decide what top I can wear to work today without a bra. Cause, you know…..Friday.

Sounds like a plan. Although my bunion might prevent the wearing of Converse, would New Balance suffice?

I do not know who Benson is but I like his shoes and I like his attitude. I’m glad you had dinner with him and that because of him you have your retirement all planned now. Great to get that out of the way while you’re still alert 😊

So the sixth person is the magical person with the answer? I thought it was a person of a later number than that… good to know.

Love the shoes and the attitude. We shall all be more like Benson!

  8. It all looks and sounds great to me. I think about retirement a lot, but maybe it’s my age. I’m also a worrier, so I wonder if there will be enough money to prevent me from going on the pet food diet. On the other hand, I have a pair of those red Cons in my closet somewhere. Maybe I’ll dig them out this weekend and pretend retire for a day.

What a nice post as usual. Day drinking is much more fun in the summertime and there is lots of sunlight. Especially when it is Margaritas. Also don’t forget Margaritas have fewer calories than Modelo beer.

Right! I won’t forget that. Liquor over beer any day, anyway 🙂
Thanks for meeting me — we should do it again before too much time gets away again!

  10. Love his shoes! I rarely wear my Converse so I gave the two low top pair I had to Baby Girl and kept my high top red ones. I think they make my feet look huge, and they have no arch support, but I’m hanging on to that pair.

Margarita’s sound good, but I am on a self-imposed detox after drinking wine…a lot of wine while on vacation recently. Enjoy your Converse and Margarita(s)!

Five years in I give thumbs up to retirement. I’m not sure why it irritates me when people ask, “what do you do to keep busy?” (I’m very busy) I’ve been bored and tired at work; never in retirement. Slept well last night and late this morning (no alarm clocks unless on a trip), writing this in the middle of Friday morning and will have brunch soon. I write and read more, go the pool for an hour when I feel ready. I don’t drink until after 5 (but I do), nap when my bod says to, and can meet for lunch with virtually no notice. I have red shoes, but they’re not Converse. Have a great weekend, y’all.

I hadn’t thought about retirement either, until our bank financial person asked me when I was retiring. I paused, thought about it, and said “in 6 years”, Sounds good to me!

I love a Mojito more than a Margarita, but not as much as Dragon’s Milk Imperial Stout. But still. Your shrimp quesadilla looks like it’s trying to run from me. OM nom nom nom! Nice try, shrimp quesadilla. I just eated you offa the screen!

Margaritas are probably my most ordered drink and the one I make least at home. At home, more rum, sometimes mojitos, but mostly rum. You’da liked this place, Marian, it was alive with color 🙂

To me, retirement only meant “no more excuses” to finish that book or paint that picture or work on the yard.. You actually put more pressure on yourself and you definitely need more margaritas….. Happy weekend – the highlight of every weekend for me is going to the Farmer’s Market.

  15. Don’t get too excited. Retirement is a lot of work.

We moved into a place with about 350 residents, and just arranging the social calendar, so you keep meeting people for dinner or lunch, to find the ones you like best for the long term, or for working together on volunteer projects, or simply for the nice conversation, is a lot of work. Husband leaves it on my list, just throwing a, “we should have Bob & wife – find out what her name is – for dinner; he’s in my walking group,” my way occasionally.

Worse, there is about a 10% turnover every year, which means 35 NEW people into independent living, so you can’t stand still.

Most of us are in the same building, and they are all so nice.

    It’s a real job, I tell you.

I hope by this time next year, I’ll be getting ready to join Benson and Dan in the after work life, wearing my bike shoes and having a craft beer with a friend. Working is hard some weeks, it sucks up way too much time that we’d like to spend doing other things – like dancing with unicorns and taking 2:00 pm cat naps. You can think about retirement, Joey, but for now, enjoy the all, all, all things because they are the good things that make us happy on the weekends. Hope you’ve had a good one.

Pretty cool photo of those converse –
And side note – was shopping over the summer and this artist lady was in front of me wearing slip On converse – turns out –
she cut her black converse sneakers to make them slip ons… removed the heel backs and sewed the cut area – she said it was easy
And in a way it was sacrarelig to mess with such a brand – but on the other hand – let her celebrate her version of converse
(And never even thought of getting a photo – but I did get a lot of the brick wall- isn’t that funny –
Custom converse – no photo – typical Richmond brick wall – lots of pics to just delete later –

    Anyhow –
love the photo of the two of you 😉
