SoCS – Butter

When I think of butter, I think of this meme:

Being out of butter is a crisis here. We tend to overbuy butter, just in case.

If Moo’s going to bake cookies, the butter has to soften. Moo is amenable to baking cookies if someone has set the butter out.

At our house, the toaster and the butter dish are always out.

Our children are toast fiends. If buttered toast and hot tea don’t cure their ills, at the least, they’re comforting.

I’ve lost many a butter dish to dogs and kids. People misuse the butter dish, setting out a fresh stick on or near the dish, but not in it. Then when I unwrap the butter it’s all soft and smooshy and I am forced to lick it from my fingers. Damn. Also, I am convinced I am the only person who recognizes the butter dish is dirty and so I am the only person who cleans it.

When Bubba and Moo were small, they were diagnosed with being too small, and so I heaped butter on their bread and overpoured their milk and they are no longer too small, and to this day they’re bread mongers and milk drunkards.

A friend of mine married into a family that practically worships rich food, and after many pitch-ins with them, year after year, the family not eating whatever tasty, nutritionally sane dish she brought, she took scalloped potatoes baked in twice the butter, twice the cream, and despite the fact that she baked them with festering resentment instead of love, the pan emptied quickly and she is forever asked to bring her scalloped potatoes, now a family favorite.

I kinda want those right now.

Butter kinda is everything.

  1. We’re cut from the same cloth with believing toast and hot tea cure or comforts all that ails ya! 😀🧈🍞

I am the person who never notices that the butter dish should be washed. In my defense, I do put new butter in it, but usually it’s when I have 1 1/4 pieces of toast buttered and I need to finish. If someone around here was going to make cookies, I’d have butter out all the time.

  3. One of the joys of the low carb diet is as much butter as you need. And bacon.

Husband follows a different diet. He eats a LOT of carbs, and has desserts (he probably shouldn’t) and bread daily. But no butter. Or bacon.

  4. We grew up using margarine but abandoned that years ago. During the year we ate vegan, we used Earth Balance and now we use that and real butter. Costco has KerryGold butter which is delicious and at a good price. I always use real butter on popcorn but not too much. I don’t like greasy a/o soggy popcorn.

As for leaving butter out, that can be problematic during an Arizona summer even with AC. 🙂

Irish butter rules! I think Kerry Gold is sold most everywhere here.
I haven’t lived in the desert, but we had butter out in Georgia for seven years. Had a lot more trouble with bread and cereal because of humidity, tho. Had to store in sealed containers, regular packaging simply would not do!

The other day we were at the grocery store, and Kevin asked if we needed butter. I said, I don’t know but we better get some just in case! We didn’t “need” it, but now I feel safe…

Truthfully one of the reasons it was so easy for me to embrace Keto eating…real butter instead of margarine and lots of it.

Right on! I do not care for margarine as a condiment, but I do use it for one recipe — drop dumplings. I’ve done it with butter and it changes the consistency :/

I do feel sorry for people on low-carb diets because there is nothing like a piece of toast and butter when you’re not feeling well. Bacon doesn’t quite cut it. Enjoyed this bit of SoCS!

Real butter is best! One time I was making up a bunch of Chex mix. I didn’t have real butter so used margarine and it was a big soggy mess. Always use real butter when making Chex mix. haha! 🙂

Butter is the unsung hero of the Culinary world. Salt free butter please. That is all I use. When it comes to toast I could live on it. Have in the past. If I don’t have two in the fridge and two in the freezer I feel naked. No matter what doctors say I will never give up butter.

I generally use that Earth Balance marg and/or olive oil for evahthang. #4 Daughter (aka Amazing) uses real butter, so I keep some and use it sometimes. IMPORTANT PRO TIP: Do NOT attempt to make puff pastry with margarine. Seriously. Just don’t.

I use a lot of olive oil, too, but even when I do, I manage to slip some butter in…
I can imagine the gooey mess of pastry made with margarine, as for the same reason I don’t use butter to make drop dumplings — right consistency means the fat must be the right fat!

Nothing “kinda” about it: butter IS everything.

I love how your friend’s in-laws love her scalloped potatoes, with extra cream and butter. Making them is a true sign of her patience and love. Maybe that’s why they taste so good.

Loved that meme. When Lulu was little she really enjoyed watching the cookie channels. She wanted to one day be Paula Deen the Queen of Butter and have her own show. She will never admit that now but B and I remember.

  14. Can you see my raised hand? Butter here, no margarine, no substitutes. I also clean the butter dish and get the butter out when I’m baking cookies. When the pandemic started and all the crazy buying, I bought extra when I could find it and froze it. I date it, and use accordingly. The only issue I’ve found is that by gosh no one is making cookies with frozen butter. 🙂

  16. My husband is always stocking up on butter. We keep all the extra in the freezer. We pretty much eat butter on all stuff that calls for it. How about fresh, crusty sourdough with some fresh butter.

Butter is everything. My doctor has me limit my intake, but it is OH SO GOOD! We have a butter bell – have you ever used one? It keeps the butter all soft and wonderful for toast and making grilled cheese sandwiches. I think the butter bell originated in France so it is definitely an all ‘hoity toity‘ way to enjoy butter.

Mmm, butter limits might would make the butter that much more divine! 😛
I have had a butter bell and a crock, but since inevitably the butter storage facility gets broken, I pretty much buy cheap ones now. Several have been from Goodwill. In fact, this is the only one I didn’t buy because of broken, but because the one before it was Pfaltzgraff, the octagon stoneware, and it tapered accordingly and the butter got more squished, so I gave that one to the boy when I bought this one.
Perhaps when we are all alone and maybe have butter limits, a butter bell will once again be a better choice 😉

Yeeessss! Butter is it. We bought farm fresh butter and I could eat it straight off the knife. Sometimes I will put it on crackers or gf toast. I much enjoy when I put a big blob on whatever I have cooked or reheated as a finishing touch. 😊 We bought ten pounds of the farm fresh to make it through the winter until the farm stand opens again in a few months. We also constantly buy butter for baking…Keri gold is our go-to for that.

I swear I have butter amnesia. Every time I go to the store, I ask myself, “Do we need butter?” And then I grab another pound just in case. At one point, I swear, I had six boxes of butter in my fridge to use up. It may have been during the crisis point of COVID lockdown when butter was becoming a scarcity–along with flour and yeast. So, apparently, we butter-loving, bread monkeys are in good company.

Of note, I have caught my son eating a stick of butter. Just that. The stick, by itself. Like it was a popsicle and he was licking his way down to a stick. I’ll have to hope he got someone else’s good cholesterol levels because his father’s and mine were/are noteworthy only in their elevated nature.
