#ThursdayDoors — Indiana State Fair

unnamed (77)

Yes, it’s that time again! I went to the fair some weeks ago. Time is blurry. I was a bit poorly. Even I was too poorly to eat ice cream at the fair!!! Still, I walked five hot and sweaty miles because I love the Indiana State Fair! Do not fear, I have since gotten better and had plenty of ice cream.

As I do annually, I shall show you my primary motive for visiting the state fair:

pork tent

unnamed (76)

cheese curds

And how could I not show you this year’s dairy sculpture?

unnamed (72)

superheroes!

I should tell you it was just Moo and me at the fair this year. Don’t tell the others, but Moo is THE best fair companion, because Moo and I like all the same things and not other things. We like art and photography and quilts and animals and the making of things. Moo told me when she grows up, she will come home and go to the fair with me. You don’t know Moo, but that was really such a tender, sweet thing for Moo to say.

Further, because Moo likes horses, I spent substantial time staring at horses, and although horses terrify me with their majestic vitesse and puissance, I think I experienced a breakthrough in my equinophobia because I think one of the horses kinda liked me and I kinda liked her. Fenced. I liked her fenced. I’m not saying I wanted to touch her, or that I could be near her were she free, but I think she maybe liked me a little bit.

unnamed (78)

not my horse, also photo credit moo

Cows, I pet. I pet cows. Without cows, there would be no ice cream! Look at his beautiful face! (He is not an ice cream cow, but dang, he’s cute!)

And quilts for my parents and Judy. I mean, y’all can look at em, but when I snapped em, I thought of my parents and Judy.

And doors for all the door peoples.

unnamed (63)

gate love

unnamed (64)

hawt hardware

unnamed (62)

my fave – a door by a door with a door in the background

less fancy, but still nifty

And the steam engine, because my, what a pleasing sound!

unnamed (61)

I hope you enjoyed this year’s trip to the fair!
I’ll try to blog again before the next one.

Same here about horses. Fenced is good. They have such BIG TEETH and they always look hungry. Cows same as you. Lovely animals, primary source of that which sits on top of a cone. I haven’t been to a state fair in years and from your photos I feel I’m missing something.

Ooooh, hot time at the fair. Ours is in Sept? Oct? Not sure, but cooler time. Chippendales came one year. A buddy and I from work went and were hoarse for a week. Could not wipe the smiles off our face, either. 🙂

Good to ‘see’ you, Joey. I have missed you.

What a great time at the fair. I like the fair — it always reminds me of Charlotte’s Web. We have not been to a fair since we moved here and that is rather odd considering how rural we are. We have an international horse venue near us — we live in horse country. Our neighbor has a few horses I see in the pasture occasionally.

    Great doors, too.

  5. So much to love here – from A to zinnias – with ice cream on top.

My favourite, though? The M monogram – for Maggie, and Moo of course.

Thanks for sharing your trip to the fair, joey! Our county fair is next weekend and I’m excited to go and wander around. I love quilts too…I don’t sew, maybe that’s why I’m amazed by them. They are art, made by artists, who sew! Horses. Same. Too big. Cool from a distance, but don’t get too close. As for cows, we now live in a free-range county (aka, ya get cows for free on your property, even tho they ain’t your cows and you get no ice cream) If I remember, I may blog about our fair this year. You’ve inspired me!

Thanks for the great commentary, Sue 🙂 I wouldn’t mind some roaming cows. Most we get here are stray cats and the black lab who roams the block. I hope you DO go and get some great happies to store away for a rainy day. I always enjoy the fair!

I have always wanted to go to a State Fair. It seems so quintessentially ‘merican. And now you’ve given me an acute case of cheese curd envy. Deep fried? Oh. Wow.

This, Joey, is a beautiful, Dickensian sentence: “Further, because Moo likes horses, I spent substantial time staring at horses, and although horses terrify me with their majestic vitesse and puissance, I think I experienced a breakthrough in my equinophobia because I think one of the horses kinda liked me and I kinda liked her.” Forty-seven words! And it made perfect sense.

Oh how I enjoy the fair. Every year I want to go but then I think of the heat and humidity and the walking; so I just say maybe next year. That Moo is the sweetest, What she said to you was the greatest thing a child could tell a parent. Glad you guys had a good time. Take care.

      It was touching 🙂
They have a … train? A tractor that pulls seated people — shaded, bench seats (I don’t have words for these things). Anyway, it’s a dollar to ride a whole loop and there are several, so if you don’t want to walk five miles, you really don’t have to.The heat and humidity are bad, though, can’t change that. We went when the high was 83 and it/I got pretty icky around noon. AND, parking, driving around the grounds is insane.

      • Benson says:

Oh I have covered all aspects and I could take a bus to the grounds and rent a scooter while there so I think the biggest draw back is the weather. That pesky August humidity is a killer, But I have hope for the future. Imagine a State Fair food post on my blog. Dare to dream.

  10. I always enjoy the fair. We’re planning on going Saturday to ours. I like looking at all the crazy chickens. and bunnies, and pigs. (And crazy people) Fair food is the main attraction, though. The exhibits are in big air conditioned buildings, so you can check out a big pumpkin as you catch your breath.

  11. I love that carriage and the steam engine. The food looks good especially that sandwich. It’s so cool that you and Moo had a great day together at the fair.

I haven’t been to a State Fair in years. I wonder where and when it is here? I will look it up.

Good to see a post from you 🙂 This is great. I love fairs, and our adult daughter just invited me to the Big-E at the end of September, so good for Moo. I learned two new words today, yeah, vitesse and puissance. Not like I have many opportunities to use them, but I’m going to try to work them into casual conversation before this time next year. Fair food is the best stuff. I’ll likely give a full report, but we have been starting with Tater-Tots and Bloody Marys. I hope you have a good weekend!

    • baldjake70 says:

Here is a use for those two words. “As I have aged I have lost vitesse et puissance.” How is that? What do you think?
The Latin phrase is from the Army Battalion that I supported, 3/69 AR Speed and Power. That is where she got it from.

Thanks! It felt really good to publish a post! I couldn’t resist the French, because one of The Mister’s mottos at Rock of the Marne was Vitesse et Puissance. I couldn’t resist!
Anyway, I’m glad Faith wants to take you to the Big-E! I’m sure you’ll have a great time and eat good noms 🙂

Been missing you. I haven’t been to a fair in years. We have a county fair but it is over already and I’ve never been to a state fair. I think that just because the kids are grown doesn’t mean I can’t go to those places. I just have to leave the hubby at home because he doesn’t have patience for wandering around like that. LOVE that carriage and it has the perfect letter on it for us – Miles!

Yeah, that carriage was swanky! I loved it too 🙂
I’m glad to have been missed and hope my blogging will pick up again when the boy one is out of the not-quiet-anymore Quiet Room.
You should totally go to the fair with someone you enjoy, and if not, I bet they have tour groups you could hook up with, as ours does.

The Texas State Fair is in October, in Dallas I think. The UT OU game is always that weekend and the Okies get pissed cuz it is always in Texas. How sad! Never been to the TX State Fair, and don’t plan on it. My daughter’s mother-in-law is a horse person, big time. I give them room. Cows too. Nice doors.

That does look like fun! Horses and cows are nice with a little distance, they are both so powerful if they do become agitated. I’ve been around horses and they are somewhat easily frightened, IMO. Thanks for taking us along!

Our State Fair started today. I am not a State Fair person. I can’t even remember the last time I went. Too much people, too much hot, and too much money for too much food that is too much unhealthy. I am glad you have a Moo that matches you. ❤

It is all those things, and yet, I love it! I do prefer to go on a weekday morning and make a day of it — weekends are just too crowded for me — and I never stay as long because too many people.

I love state and county fairs – my favorite event is the piglet race! Looks like a muggy day there in Indiana….

    • joey says:

There were ZERO piglets this year! In all the whole swine barn, hundreds of piggies, and no piglets! I think it was a first, or they all had the day off 😉

Glad you are feeling better- and enjoyed your doors and more!
That really was sweet of Moo to say that she’d come back to go to fair with you!
It really says so much about her wisdom and developing
independence – like to have that sense of being on her own but to know he value of coming back to be with momma! That was beautiful –
And side note – I missed going to see Jim Gaffigan this month because I was not up to it – ugh – anyhow – glad you could make the fair

I enjoyed your trip to the fair because that’s about as close as I’m going to get to one. They are hot and sweaty and full of people. At best I’d be good for about an hour and then itching to leave.

I feel the same about horses. Nice to look at but please keep your distance. I feel the same way about cows too. Any animal that is very big and can spook easily is – in my opinion – something I wish to maintain considerable personal space.

Beautiful zinnias! Oooo, that wagon tail–so beautiful it is! Those quilts are super-fancy, even though some of them look like the tests you take to see if you’re colorblind. I went to the state fair once. It was full of people, and I never went back.

En passant…c’est genial de te voir!
Nice to see your shots from the fair, we don’t have fairs like that around here so if I ever make it our your way imma time it so you can show me your fair, ok? That blue carriage/buggy is the shot of the post in my humble opinion. It look all so shiny and new that I’d be afraid to take it out of the barn for fear of getting it dirty.
Again: good to see you my friend 🙂

  27. I’m chuffed reading this entire post. A good fair is hard to beat with its great unhealthy food that taste sooo good. I love horses, I owned horses, I miss horses so you had my attention there as well. Then you posted the quilts, and I love the first one with the blue ribbon. It is gorgeous. To top it off you added the doors and gates, But, the topping on the sundae was that Moo will go to the fair with you when you’re both older because that’s not something you can buy. Give Moo a hug. 🙂
