Strange, Even for Me

I had the strangest dream the other night. (Whatta cliché!)

The Mister and I were flying through cornfields.
I fly a lot in my dreams. Or rather, I seem to move my body like wind, at will. Do y’all do that, too?

Anyway, that’s not the strange part.

The strange part was, we were chasing The Grim Reaper.
Now, metaphorically, we are all chasing The Grim Reaper, even when we fool ourselves into thinking that we’re running from him — but in this dream, we were chasing him, not with malice, but like children at play.

We stopped briefly to bounce on the back of a black umbrella as though it were a trampoline.

When we reached the edge of the cornfield, we came to a billboard with The Grim Reaper posing, and the sign read, “I’M ON THE OTHER SIDE.”
Clever phrasing, don’tcha think?

The edge of the cornfield loomed over a busy interstate, maybe a hundred feet below.
Directly opposite us, on the other side of the interstate, The Grim Reaper stood, waving and wagging his bottom, as if to say, “Haha! You can’t catch me!”

That’s when I woke up and had a smile to myself. Strange, but whimsical. Kinda Halloween-y!

Very Interesting. Imagine that being said with a heavy German accent. I don’t put too much in the whole dream interpretation thing. I used to. My dreams are nearly always vivid and convoluted. I don’t fly as much as I am able to walk on air. And yes quite often they have a sexual component. Now as for your dream, all I can say is obviously you and your Mr. are quite comfortable with your life together and rather than fear death you accept it as a buddy. How does that sound?

  2. Dreams are always interesting, aren’t they? A coworker of mine was just sharing a dream about cornfields the other day…weird. I love that the Grim Reaper was wagging his bottom in yours.

I have flying dreams all the time, except I’m swimming instead of flapping or soaring. Have absolutely no idea what that means. 😉

If you’re going to have a dream about the one that got away, let it be the Grim Reaper. Since you started with a cliche, why did the Grim Reaper cross the road?

  8. Your dreams are so much more exciting than mine…I just have those “late for something” dreams where I can’t get where I’m going, or “naked at work/school” dreams, where, well, you know…

I do a lot of flying in my dreams. Not like supergirl, but by will I float to where I want to be, as quickly or slowly as I need to be. I wake up often sad that I can’t make that happen while awake.

  11. And then, last night…flying (among many other convoluted things)! The power of suggestion…

  12. I’m a bit of a “Dream flyer” myself, and have often got myself out of uncomfortable situations by lifting myself off the ground, but never got near the grim reaper thank goodness. !

okay….but I really think you might have called first….He was probably just grimly reaping his halloween patch, and you skert him…But I’m no authority on grimness or reaping…but my first suggestion would be smile…nobody likes a grim face…

That mangled word is “husband” because I was happy he was in this dream with you. You didn’t have to do it alone. The ending of the G.R. wagging his bottom st you relieved my worries and made me smile, Joey.

“Mooned By The Grim Reaper” sounds like the front page headline to a Enquirer post. I suppose it is better than “Giving Birth to the Grim Reaper’s Love Child!” That is the kind of dream/nightmare you have after too many spicy chimichangas.

I have the flying dream, twisting this way and that above my day, Joey. Odd. Sometimes freeing; sometimes it brings apprehension. It’s usually followed by the one where I’m riding my motorcycle as a teen. I never owned a motorcycle as a teen. And I’ve never driven one, ever.

I have toyed with the Grim Reaper, down here. When the Blue Oyster Cult song ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper’ came out, a promoter for the U of Maryland campus record store thought it would be a good idea to dress somebody up as that evil guy and march him around the student union followed by a stooge carrying a boom box, well, endlessly booming said song. As most folks dodged impending doom, I walked up to the dude and shook his hand, to great glee from my roommate.

Haha! I love that song, I do. Maybe it was in my head at bedtime, like a regular earworm 😉
Maybe your dreams are telling you to get a motorcycle? Or maybe the mototcycle represents freedom you haven’t felt since your youth.

I think the latter take is more likely than the former. I don’t much want a motorcycle in my conscious thoughts, Joey, but I do think back to the days of playing touch football in the street fondly. 🙂

I float more than fly in my dreams. The weightlessness is fun. 🙂
    Interesting dream. 🙂
