#ThursdayDoors — R is for Red Doors

Red doors have great significance religiously, historically, and culturally. I love red doors. I find them striking. They grab my attention every time.

This door is one of my faves:

One-Liner Wednesday — Q is for Quotable Moo

When asked how she knew triceratops were herbivores, six-year-old Moo said, “I read about it in the insidethelopedia.”

P is for Pansies

I wish I were a tulip, but I’m a pansy.

You can take quizzes on what flower you are — I’m a lily. I don’t feel like a lily at all.
I feel like a pansy.

For people who don’t know the names of flowers, I have taken some photos from Pixaby. I hope that’s helpful. These are pansies:

Spring is all decked-out in pansies.
I don’t plant pansies in the spring.

You see, much like me, pansies can’t take the heat.

Pansies will take a freeze, they’ll even hunker down in the snow. For a few months in spring, their happy lil faces smile at you, but then as the days grow longer and hotter, they start to look angry — and then they simply shrivel up and die.

I don’t care what the quiz says, I feel like a pansy.

It’s gonna be some ridiculous temp again today, like 83 or somethin. Bleh.

Any flowery thoughts to add?

O is for Of Course I’m Doing Cee’s Share Your World #16

If you had to have your vision corrected would you rather: glasses or contacts?  Or what do you use if you need to have your vision corrected?

I’ve had readers for over a decade now, solely for sewing and fine print…Lately, though, I have entered the age of blur. I do fine with lit screens, but I pretty much cannot read paper or whatnot without my glasses.
I expect I’ll get new glasses this year.

If you had to describe your day as a traffic sign, what would it be?

SLOW
I did not sleep well last night. I have a lot to do today, so I’m high on the Pepsi and still not at full speed.

Was school easy or difficult for you? How so?

School was easy for me. I coasted. I respond well to structured environments with consistent expectations. I enjoy learning and thinking.
I struggled with algebra, but I made it through eventually. They don’t let you go to college without passing four semesters of algebra. It took me six.

Would you rather take a 1 or 2 week vacation with an organized tour or take a cruise of your choice?

Terrible choice. Tours mean groups of people and a schedule. Ick. Ick. Cruises mean boats and sea monsters. Oh the horror.

Maybe, and I do mean maybe, with enough alcohol, I might could enjoy one of those river cruises where you eat and photograph your way through Europe. Maybe. I’d probably sleep with a life jacket on. Maybe I could convince The Mister to wear one of those harpoon gun thingies. Those cruises do look lovely. I know my life though, and I would totally be on the one boat that gets eaten by a giant sea monster.
People would ask, “Who’da thunk it?” and I’d be wavin my specter arm, “ME! I THUNK IT!”

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

Okay, so y’all know I do not love warm weather and while it was hard to sleep in the heat (74) I did enjoy the bright, warm weekend that permitted me to start gardening! Plants! Seeds! Dirt! Yay! I really enjoyed the after part — The Mister pulled our chairs out into the freshly-mown yard. We sat there with our swate tay, just takin it all in. Ah, soft green grass!

sadie.13

(I’d be remiss not to mention — In a neighborhood full of flowers and flowering trees — Where did the ONE yellow jacket land? On my shoulder!)

This week should be typical, and for that, I am also grateful.

SoCS — N is for No, No Thank You

Sometimes I hear people talking about things they used to do and how they’ve done their time, and they’ll never do it again…

“The next time I wear a suit and tie, it’ll be at my own funeral!” for instance.

Some people really do go on about it, and I’ll think  wow that’s like, quite a lot of baggage you’ve got there.

That’s as far as my judgement goes, because y’all, I’ve got quite a lot of baggage myself.

Recently I was asked if I was interested in a babysitting job. At first I was all oh yes, that’d be fine, i’d love to help, i’m good with kids, i have time, and ooh! extra money… I mean, I did babysit for years. These two kids belong to a woman I’ve known since she was a baby. Her family is one of the nicest I know. I would enjoy playing, eating animal crackers, and reading all the wonderful books with the precious little people. I would.

Then I started thinking extensively and my brain went to this dark place where it forgives but never forgets: car seats, choking hazards, diapers, poop, rashes, butt cream, vomit, fevers, dog bites, cat scratches, poisonous plants, bee stings, hard floors, busted heads, skinned knees, band-aids, coffee table corners, outlet covers, cords, potty training, “i do it!” children’s programming, strollers, messes you can’t even…

I barely lived through it.

I asked, “I suppose it wouldn’t be helpful if I only took the older one, hm?”

I’m a kid person. I never was a baby person.
I guess if you’re not a baby person, you can nurture your own babies with the support of your husband, your mother, his mother, his sister, your friends, your neighbors, basically a village, a pediatrician, Parenting magazine, twenty-two baby books, dozens of Little Einsteins videos — but once your babies are kids, you can go right back to not bein a baby person.

Are you a baby person? What have you decided you’ve done enough of?

M is for Meanwhile

I’m halfway through A-Z. Meanwhile, life goes on with no regard to alphabetical order.

So let’s see…

Yesterday, I met local food blogger Benson for a DoorScursion. We walked through a bit of his old stomping grounds, a neighborhood called Brightwood. I’ll blog about that on a Thursday next month, but here we are. Or there we were. Or whatever.

brightwood.benson

I’ve been continuing my work on the kitchen.
About six months ago, The Mister and I removed the old colossal microwave which hung over my range like the spirit of 1982. That was NOT easy. I said, “Begone behemoth!” and The Mister said this:

behemothbegone

After a lot of peeling, scraping, and sanding, I changed out the backsplash. The Mister hung my new range hood this last week.

I know! We too are really happy we can see when the stove is on and that the chicken noodles are still warm. Before we did this, you wouldn’t have seen the back burners, the wall, or the controls. It’s freakin amazing.
No, we don’t miss having a microwave.
I continue to paint and caulk, but already everything’s lighter and brighter and I’m so delighted with the progress.

And there’s the dining room.
Cletus the Dog Kitten, sans claws, has remained enthusiastic and helpful about wallpaper removal. Cute little bastard, isn’t he?

Moo finished up her science fair project. It was about traveling water. Mostly, this involved mess. Moos are good at messes, especially in the name of science. I lay down an old towel and she asked me for a clean towel. I said, “This one’s clean. Are you asking me if we can use a pretty white fluffy towel for your blue food coloring extravaganza? Cause that would be NO.” Can you even tell that’s a faded pink Hello Kitty towel? No you cannot.

104

this bit’s really for skipah

Sometimes I feel an overwhelming relief that Moo can math. I loved science in school, and I still do, but she has the math aptitude to exceed my pursuits and I’m pleased as pie.
Also, Moo runs for fun. And does folk dancing. And art. Today is clay day.
Next week, she’ll choose her instrument — the viola, she says.

Sassy is learning eighth notes and slurs. I have no idea what she’s going on about half the time she talks to me about her music, but it does sound good when she plays. It doesn’t sound like much when she air-bows.

The Mister starts a new job Monday. Apparently greener pastures require a longer commute.

The tulips are opening and closing depending on variety and location. For those of you paying attention, Moo admitted she DID plant the red tulips all in a row while I planted the red tulips by the garage. I was not as duh as I thought, and Moos are also good at mischief.

Gawd I love tulips! It’d be awesome if the squirrels didn’t eat them, but as long as I add tulips every year, I think I’ll win.

My seed trays are full inside. I forgot to start the marigolds early AGAIN. I’ve started lavender and goldenrod indoors, which are both new to me. I’ve never grown them from seed and I hope the seeds take. Outside it’s time to plant carrots, spinach, onions, basil, astilbe, and coneflower. Preparing garden beds seems to take forever, but oh, it’s so worth it.

I have hoarded stale carbs for the squirrels and it’s time to harvest pet hair for the seedlings.

We’re not gonna have much of a back 40 this year unless we get someone to come out and drive a Bush Hog through it. Jury’s still out on that one. Not lookin promising.

The peonies are purple stems climbing out of the ground right now. The ants are already wild in anticipation. I comfort myself by sayin, “At least they’re not fire ants!”

I still don’t miss Georgia. I still thank God I’m home every single day.

Here are some things I’ve been cookin:

It’s good to take walks with your dog, snapping photos of things that catch your eye…

Maybe you also photograph some things on accident. You dunno. Does this steering wheel make my knees look fat?

135

Sometimes you stand a few feet from a little black duck, just communing in pleasure, but then your dog finally notices it and yells out, “DUCK!” or at least it felt like that when your left arm was almost ripped from your body.
Then you go home and ‘read’ with your cats, so it’s all okay. Clara on my chest, Catticus behind my head, and Cletus, well, he’ll keep The Mister’s spot warm.

073

Last week the furnace failed to reach the set temperature and I had flashbacks of wearing scarves and hats indoors and writing big checks, but I’m happy to say it was only that the filter needed to be changed out. Peculiar sales technique; The price of one furnace filter was $28.99 but a pack of two was $39.88. Why is that even a thing?

This month, people in my life have been affirming life’s beautiful truths. Allow me to share these truths with you.
Taking risks pays off.
You can do anything you put your mind to.
People are essentially good at heart.
Giving feels good.
Justice prevails.
Good things come to those who wait.

This month, people in my life have been affirming life’s less pleasant truths. Allow me to share those with you.
You need experience to get a job to earn experience.
Women want you to want to do the dishes.
Cancer sucks.
Common sense is not common.
Expectations only lead to disappointment.

J is for Just Sayin

Just how hard is it to think of J things?
Like my name? Or my husband’s? Or the four hundred Jennifers I’m required to know because of when I was born?

I am a J thing.

J names must surely be the hardest for people to pronounce.
On a regular basis I am Joelle, Joni, Jody, and Joy.

It starts in school, the J of it.

“Think of a word that starts with the same letter as your first name.”
“Can you name three words that start with J?”
“Make an acrostic about yourself using your name!”

I wasn’t bitchy enough in grade school, or I’da been in the principal’s office for sayin, “Fuck you Mrs. Koepper. Fuck you jauntily.”

I is I’m Still Doing Share Your World #15

Name one thing not many people know about you.
Despite not being a morning person, I’m pleasant in the morning. But I’m mean as a snake if you wake me from a nap. Naps are delicious, like ice cream. Would you also take away my ice cream? Don’t do that, it’s just plain mean.

If a distant uncle dies and you were always his favorite and leaves you $50,000 (any currency) in his will, what would you do?
Put it in the bank.
Seriously, it takes me a long time to decide to spend money. It took me three months to choose a new lamp, then it took me 20 lampshades.
Besides, I can’t travel until June.

Where do you hide junk when people come over?
My house is generally clean and tidy. When it’s not, it’s because DIY. I have a DIY closet. So I may return some treasures to their proper places, but I do not hide junk. A place for everything and everything in its place.

Complete this sentence:  I want to learn more about …
the things that already interest me: the natural world, the arts, history, cultures…

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?
From last week, I am grateful for the help and support of my husband. I also owe a great deal of gratitude to my gray sweats, Behr paints, and fountain cokes.
I am happy to report that this week is expected to be ‘normal’ and that I’ll be getting a nap here in a bit.

while it’s raining.
